I have this rifle in the stainless lite variety set up with a Leupold VX-II 3-9. I was gonging a 12" plate at 400 consistently off a bench rest recently. It's an accurate little rifle out of the box. More accurate than I can probably shoot. The only thing I would change is lightening up the trigger but I haven't shot it enough to decide if I would even need to.

    ^^^ I like it. 12 X .73 caliber slugs ain't nothin to fuck with!

Picked up a SR1911 with a nasty idiot scratch super cheap last week ($250). Am I crazy to think some fine grit (it's a brushed stainless frame) sandpaper or scotchbrite pads along with the grain might get rid of it?

It runs surprisingly well. Blew 300rds thru it flawlessly on Friday. It's no match grade barrel, but the accuracy is better than expected.

I dropped a big parts order this AM to get it fully upto spec & rid it of the POS MIM parts

    Trijicon F&R sights
Smith & Alexander Magwell / MSH
An a bunch of Wilson Bulletproof parts: beavertail grip safety, safety, slide stop, hammer, disconnector, sear & mag release.

Now I just have to decide on some grips and figure out who bring it to for customization (refinish frame to fix idiot scratch, refinish slide to remove ruger markings, 25lpi front strap checkering & beveling the bottom edge of the slide)

I was going to blue it, before I saw this custom ruger done by John Harrison which has inspired me to go for a similar look:

[QUOTE=Leavenworth Skier;4523898]I don't like to kill predators unless they get too close to the house or start trying to eat any of my critters. Hunting for the sake of sport or trophy doesn't sit well with me personally. No judgement those that enjoy hunting for sport but I personally only like to hunt for meat or defensive purpose.

That being said... For the last week we've had a pack of coyotes trying to lure our dogs into the bushes. Probably to eat them. Since they are Pointers, our dogs have a really hard time ignoring what they perceive to be prey or something worth hunting. We've been seeing coyote scat within 30 feet of our house and the have been waking us up at 2

Gotta love using the house as a bench rest...while we've not had coyote problems, the wife said yesterday that we need gun ports in all the windows to make things easier for other pest control...man she's coming along well being a Canadian and former gun virgin pacifist!

Benelli? I love my SBE II, will never sell that thing.

Just picked up a Shield in 9mm. Fun little gun. Have Talon grip tape coming. Probably upgrade the sights later but that's about it for this one.

Trigger kit, about $100. Thank me later.

I have the M&P in .45 and the shield in 9. My GF can put all rounds onto a 5" plate for 30 yds with the 9mm, pretty damn annoying to me.

shotguns, for those than havent figured out yet that a rifle makes a better HD weapon (because we've been lacking a good debate lately!).
When seconds count...ski patrol, SAR or the cops are only minutes away...

Nice! I think out of all the single stack 9mm - Glock 43, Nano, LC9, PPS, etc, the Shield is the best for the price! The few times I've shot one they work 100% of the time, point naturally, have a low recoil impulse and are comfortable for EDC. Trigger does kinda suck but it's still pretty shootable. Apex is certainly nice, but I'm not totally sold on it being worth it for the Shield. On the bigger guns, absolutely it's a much better trigger, but my impression from shooting the shield was that the trigger was much less gritty with a better defined wall unlike the big guns.

Now you need a holster for it...

Actually the opposite is often voiced by pros. The knock down power and shock of the shotgun coupled with the lack of over penetration by projectiles, ie thru walls, makes them ideal choice for HD.

I will probably leave the trigger alone. I have put 350rnds through it and for what I wanted it for, it will be fine. I can put a full mag in the 10 ring at 10yds pretty quickly. Shot a couple silhouette targets out to 25yds and was able to put all rounds on target in the kill zone rather quickly. It points nice and has minimal recoil. I bought a BlackHawk open carry holster and in the process of looking into a nice IWB CC holster for it. I have seen several manus but I have to order as no one local carries a decent one.

Yup, that is why I built my 870 into a home defense gun. Per the recco of several instructors, I run lead 6 shot.

I traded a 85% dr200 rifle for a pair of completely gnarley stainless smith and wesson 357's that looked new after some good polishing. I used a dremel with jewelers rouge on the scratches then polished the whole thing. The barrels were fine they just were not treated well. I have loved stainless anything since then.

DON'T TOUCH THE TOP PART THAT IS BEAD BLASTED MATTE and smith's come out really well. I'm not sure about rugers but it should be the same.

I think a lot of those comments/opinions predate the widespread availability of polymer tipped hollowpoint rifle rounds. I like the 60gr Hornaday TAP and the 55gr Federal V-Shocks for 223 home defense loads . These rounds have significantly more energy than your standard 9mm/40sw/45 options and actually have more desirable penetration characteristics as they typically only penetrate ballistic gel to a depth of 6-9". A lightweight hollow point 223/5.56 round expands very quickly (it's almost like a mini explosion) creates a nasty stretch cavity. The projectile also fragments quite well, so the small fragments carry less energy and run a lesser risk of over penetration.

Looking at the same traits w/ a 9/40/45 you're typically looking at rounds that penetrate 11-15 inches of ballistic gel (almost double the penetration of hollow point 223!) which means that it is likely that the round will come flying out the back side of your target still carrying a shitload of energy and has greater potential to harm objects other than your target. This is all assuming the use of a FMJ target load. Obviously the penetration and wound characteristics change quite a bit when using hollow point pistol round and start to put rifles and pistols on more equal footing.

Shotguns tend to penetrate even deeper than rifle/pistol rounds. Buckshot (16 30cal pellets) typically penetrate to a depth of 12".

At the end of the day the best HD gun, IMO, is the one you can shoot safely, accurately & effectively.
