Not sure how big you are, but if you can comfortably shoot a Super X Model 1 they are one of, if not the finest gas operated semi auto shotgun ever produced. But it's heavy. I love, love, love mine. I just can't seem to miss with it. Not sure how hard/easy they are to find as they stopped making them in the mid 80's.

If still looking at pump guns, look at the mossy 590a1 if you're concerned about durability, They will survive a nuclear armageddon.

Is it as simple as get an action, barrel and stock and mate them together with a little gunsmithing?

Realistically is this possible with some simple tools and a little help from a pro? I'm fairly handy and definitely have mechanical aptitude.
Depends on what kind of gun you are building. Some are so easy that a 5th grader could do it (AR's) but others are much more difficult. How the barrel attaches to to the receiver is probably the biggest issue you'll face. You should probably get some headspace gauges and figure out what you're doing before you build one and have it blow up in your hands.

Not really concerned about increased accuracy (math is math, for the most part) but rather features and a variety of output. But thanks, I'll check it out on my test android VM.

In theory I understand headspace gauges. Don't have any, because I've never had to use them.

Would like to put together a 30/06 bolt action. Bedding the stock sounds like I could fuck it up a few times pretty easily (or at least not achieve the desired results), but not a safety risk. Over polishing a trigger assembly or blowing up the action due to some stupid mistake are high on my list of worries.

    Any recommended resources?

Just get some go / nogo gauges and it's easy to tell if your headspace is in spec.

Bedding the rifle is just filling and sanding, so not rocket science. But different guns are built differently, so I don't really have any general advice on a build. A Rem 700 would probably be a good bet as there is a lot of aftermarket support for the platform and it's a decent rifle.

Might even be worth just buying a rifle that you'll like, and get to know it inside and out and learn what you like/dislike about it and upgrade the parts accordingly. If you can't achieve your goals by modifying a stock gun, go ahead and build one from the components you want to use.

Any particular reason you want to assemble a bolt gun? You won't save any money.

If you really want to, Savages are easiest to assemble and Remington 700 have the most parts. If you want ultra expensive shoot a gnat's ass at 1000 yards type gun look at some of custom actions, Surgeon, Stiller, etc.

I'd just buy an elcheapo Savage Long Action or Remington 700 at Walmart, replace the stock with something cool looking and better fitting (Boyds, McMillian, Bell & Carlson, etc) (and maybe the trigger in the 700) and shoot it until the barrel is worn out. Then buy a custom barrel from any number of custom shops.

Toying with the idea mainly as a source of amusement. A stainless Tikka or Weatherby is going to run me about $700, and I'm still going to want to change the stock. Thinking maybe I can get my hands on a used or cheaper 700, Savage etc. And add a new stock, trigger work and maybe a new barrel and have a better gun at the same or lower point.

Probably not, I never save money doing things myself, but it is always more gratifying

Shot a coyote last night as it was in a dead sprint at 60 yards, running away from me from right to left. Shot it through the heart, piling it up in a second.

The weapon? Good ol' Marlin 30-30 with a peep site. Felt fucking good (little bastard killed two lambs the night before).

Bob Ward's in Bozeman sells stainless Weatherby Vanguards for $575, I got one in 243, but they have some 30-06's for the same price too. No idea why you would want to put another stock on it, I really like it.

That's a good price, locally the lowest I've found is $675, on auctions i've seen a few go for just over $600 before shipping and transfer fees.

As far the stock goes I haven't actually handed one in stainless, my understanding is they are a different stock. I hate the lower level ones...

    This excites me: http://www.realguns.com/articles/726.htm

Takes SR25 pattern P-Mags, AR15 stocks, grips, rails and safety selectors and shoots sub .5 MOA... and for the whole rifle it costs less than a chassis does from a lot of companies out there. Msrp is $1400 but street price will probably be around $1200.

Add these parts to any rifle, and it'll shoot pretty well ; )

Hmmm, after reading the article its seems well thought out. Local guy has one in 308 so I am waiting to hear from him how it shoots. Seems like they should offer a wider range in calibers and maybe one or two upgrades.

Its like a mini Barrett only better.

My buddy owns a LGS & says they are being shipped out based on orders. He dropped an order for 3 of em yesterday. I'm getting one in .308. Agreed that some barrel & bolt swaps for more calibers would be nice. Wouldn't mind some .270 WSM lovin'. About to drop an order for a Steiner M5Xi to sit on top - just have to decide what to do for mounts/rings on a 34mm tube.

You willing to bring it up this way when you get it?

Would love to try one out...

If it's everything that they say it is, you're getting the equivalent of a $3000 precision rifle for far less. I've seen them as low as $998 online. They really did their homework on barrel twist rates, barrel lengths, calibers, threaded barrel, modular configuration, etc. I think my next gun will be one of these in 6.5 Creedmoor.

Sure, although I don't know that I'll be back up in VT until september.

Anyone see these very pretty AR's?:

I don't like to kill predators unless they get too close to the house or start trying to eat any of my critters. Hunting for the sake of sport or trophy doesn't sit well with me personally. No judgement those that enjoy hunting for sport but I personally only like to hunt for meat or defensive purpose.

That being said... For the last week we've had a pack of coyotes trying to lure our dogs into the bushes. Probably to eat them. Since they are Pointers, our dogs have a really hard time ignoring what they perceive to be prey or something worth hunting. We've been seeing coyote scat within 30 feet of our house and the have been waking us up at 2-3am with howling and barking within 75 yards of the house. I keep trying to shoot them but by the time I've gotten outside with my rifle they are in the brush. Or if I try to call them in, they'll howl and bark but won't come out of the brush were I can get a clean shot.

This morning one of our dogs started going berserk, alerting us to the coyote presence. Sure enough, 3 coyotes in the field plus more in the brush howling to attempt to call the dogs in. This time I had planned ahead and taken the screen out of the bedroom window. The coyotes were about 200 yards out on the edge of a large hay field. I got 2 out of 3 with my .300 wm before they took off into the bushes. Needless to say, the 208 gr AMAX handloads I used were quite effective and the windowsill was a great rifle rest.

    I now have a approval from the wife to buy a .243 ... I'm thinking a Tikka T3.
