How does long sands handle a 14-15 sec period swell? The swell's not huge but with the period and the tides I may need to look at some points or reefs for this one or travel north for before work sessions.

generally, and depending on swell angle you can do ok. anything over 11/12 seconds and you're searching for shoulders/corners of course. some of the 'ok' is that it won't be crowded like a rock reef/point which ups the value for me. it'll be high tide mornings as i said, which long sands likes. more water there the better, imo. thursday morning could be quite the paddle battle which would be good to keep the crowds down.
the late august swell we had was consistent 14 second in the head high range and there were plenty of good workable waves out in front of the restaurant.
if it's real bad (like really bad) closeout city i'll prolly just head down to nh and find some rock to surf over.
I can list five breaks that basically no one surfs that love the 14s stuff much closer to your home than nh. You really need to travel further north than ogt some time. You know, if it happens to be really really bad. As for long sands, the restaurant acts more like a mixed break with the rock outcroppings nearby. And the cobbles on the north end actually need the longer period.
i hear ya, and ya i try to avoid nh like the plague these days only due to crowds.
Fuck crowds. That is the beauty of being in Maine. There is really only three spots that ever get crowded from my experience. Te river, gooches and higs. Occasionally on an exceptional day the outside wells jetty can build a crowd, but last time I saw or heard of that was dec of 94. Fuck that day was good out there.
Another reason why I like central over southern cal. Plenty of surfers an crowds here in town, but you can still get excellent waves solo, or with a small group, just a few miles north. Just have to work a whole lot harder at it here than there.
I'm not too familiar with the area, but I'm looking to explore a bit. Why Higgins? Just an arbitrary choice. I appreciate the beta from everyone so far. By no means am I an expert but I'm looking to surf some bigger waves for sure. Just trying to escape the crowds on Cape Ann.
Look at a map. Higgins is south facing so it handles a southerly swell, and a northerly wind, both common in late hurricane season.
Definitely looking messy here, with wind onshore for next couple days, Unfortunately I'm on OBX for the week with the gf and her family, surf is secondary( can't believe I just said that)

Tent camping/car camping is the plan.
Exploring is for when waves suck/marginal. Good surf is for picking a spot and staying on it unless it just isn't working. Wednesday/thursday should yield tons of options. Don't turn it into confusion land.
i'll be at york tomorrow morning, thurs morning, and friday morning. It'll be working with light crowds.
tomorrow????
Nice!
we're starting to get some 12 second period stuff, but still micro. Looking forward to lonely high tide restaurant tango in the am at the neighborhood break.
hard to believe you'll be alone with the invaision quebecois going on for this swell.... got the last room @ seaturn's !
Tomorrow after five meeting up with folk at Wells. No idea what's up for Thurs am
Anyone have any recent Long Island beta? I cashed in two vacation days for this storm, Wednesday & Thursday. Hopfully I made a good call...
Mid high tide at 90th at Rockaway can handle a bigger swell. I surf the perfect storm (previously called the Halloween) swell there at over DOH and with long lines stretch down the beach.
Otherwise the coves out by M.
Maybe Jones Beach. Depends on how the sand bar and wedge have been setting up the past two decades.
Or if you can, drive to RI. Suit ton of options there. Judith is the obvious option but you have all the breaks in Newport, as well as M_________, on the other side of the harbor from PT. J. And the K.
South of the restaurant was VERY nice for the 2 hours i was out surrounding high tide this am. Swell was only 2.2 @ 13, but if you chose the waves correctly (and there were many) you could get some real nice waist high waves with long period zip. Rode the longboard which was a good choice. So clean.
had a great time surfing with therudeness. Always fun
swell appears to be slowly on the uptick. As i was getting out the wind had switched light onshore, but not sure if it'll be enough to mess things up. As i was walking the dog east down my road i could feel the onshores.
maybe the rude man will chime in.
Such awesome corners this am. The lefts were perfect![]()
tomorrow.......................
Definitely some texture in nh now. Maine will be worse cept for ogt which will prolly be closeout city and crowded. Flag here at work is a mix of a low flap and semi strait sail and aimed west. Kinda yucky
I’m pretty sure you drove away as I was suiting up. The wind wasn't too bad for the next couple hours. As the tide dropped, the outside right started to work on the sets. Hopefully it builds overnight.
