The finest bourbon I have tasted. Yet.

I ended up on a 13 hour bourbon/whiskey bender Tuesday. Took down large quantities of bookers, bakers, knob creek single, basil Hayden's, whistle pig, boss hog whistle pig, pappy van winkle 23, 20 & 15, crown Royal and bunch of other stuff I'd never heard of. The TSA person asked me if I had slept the night before. I was proud to tell them that I got 90 minutes. I think I was highly flammable when I boarded the plane. The day started with a Jim Beam distiller bringing a briefcase of their rarest bourbons to a meeting and wrapping it up in a backroom jazz club late night.

In all honesty I have no idea what was good or bad. Think my taste buds were shot in the first hour after a couple 130 proof bookers.

This was dinner tonight. Fresh bottle of Pappy 15 and a Cuban Montrcristo No.2

Yay me.

Hangover and a couple days to reflect on my choice of dinner that night. I'd still do it in a heartbeat. I might eat something though and I might have switched to Woodford before I got down to 1/2 of the freshly opened bottle. Oh well.

You heard it here first, Woodford to release a Rye Whiskey and make it a permanent part of its lineup in 2015. Aged 7-8 years.

This could be promising as I find Woodford to the the most consistently good bourbon and distillery - therefore whatever they touch should be awesome; also I was lucky enough to taste some of that old Masters Collection Rye they did a few years back and thought it was much better than a lot of what was on the market at the time (for the price it should have been though )

Anyway, should be cool!

I'm a big fan of EWSB, but for me, WL Weller 12 wins that category.

On a related note, I marinated steaks in a bourbon-dijon mustard marinade and because it was cold and rainy, cooked them in a cast-iron skillet. Deglazed the skillet and made a cream sauce with the leftover marinade. So tasty.

The Rye? I'm not such a stickler on where rye is sourced from as I am with KY bourbon, but if you're referring to MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana - that is right on the Ohio River (in the same 'burg as skiing mecca Perfect North Slopes!) - where many ryes originate, then I'm not too worried.

If you're talking about the Woodford bourbon I'm not sure what you're saying. To my knowledge all their bourbon is produced either at Woodford and a little at Brown-Forman in Lousiville.

We're big fans of Woodford Reserve here. My kid did the factory tour and picked up a bottle of the double-oaked. We were in DC for his graduation and he asked us to bring his uniforms back home so he could travel for a couple of weeks. One uniform wound up in my carry-on. Unbeknownst to me the half drunk Woodford's was wrapped in the uniform. It took TSA a couple of passes and inspections of the bag to find it. My wife and a very friendly TSA lady get into a private discussion. Next thing I know my wife is heading off with the bourbon. I figure she's going to come back sloshed, if she comes back at all. Instead she shows up with the bourbon in little plastic bags in her carryon and they let it through. Didn't even leak.

Side note--don't put spray starch in your checked baggage unless you want everything in the bag starched. The kid had a couple of cans in the bag he gave me.

The worst, most over-oaked, bitter bourbon I've ever had was Elijah Craig 21 yo. Just saying. It might have been a bad bottle (never heard of that before with bourbon) but I'd for sure taste the 23 before I laid down the cash.

I too am the last one up. In-laws lake house and enjoying some red-label Black Maple Hill.

Now if people would stop buying my damn bourbon up, I wouldn't have to come this far to drink half a bottle at a time when I want.

I try to ski on storm days, but when the blizzard is so bad that everything is shut down and I can't see my deck rail for the snow I like to sit in front of the window and watch the snow with a glass of bourbon in hand. Scotch works too.

Got the kids to bed, finally. Cracked a bottle of Old Scout 7. The Mrs. poured the last of the Barterhouse for herself. We watched an old movie and got a mellow buzz. Totally content.
