What's with the bases? I'm all for colour but wonder what, if any, impact this will have on durability, toughness, etc that ON3P is known for? I've often heard, though I would be the last to claim to be an expert on the subject, that pure black bases are the toughest and most durable. Thoughts? Opinions? Facts? Iggy?

Our base graphics have no effect on durability or toughness and nothing is different from how we've been doing our bases since ON3P started. We use a clear 1.8mm Durasurf 4001 base on everything (same as every production ski we've ever put out). Most are screen printed, the EH ski and GC bases are done through sublimation. We don't die cut, so there are no seams to weaken the base or slow it down. Same material as high end all black bases, just clear and thicker than almost everyone is using.

As for black-only bases being better, we've used clear bases since 2009 and never had an issue. We've tested all black and never noticed any difference from the clear material we use. I know people say all black is better. I don't really buy into the base color being the factor. I think the molecular structure of the plastic is a lot more important than if it is black, clear, or any other color.

Anyone running a 4001 base is going to put out a ski with a really durable base. We increase that durability by upping the base thickness from the 1.2-1.3mm average base thickness to 1.8mm. Hope that answers any questions you have. If you have any more, just let me know. Thanks!

I tend to ski through lightly covered scree fields on occassion. ON3P bases are super fucking durable. It's a shock that my 09/10 BGs are still alive and kicking (though getting slow from lots of minor base damage).

Anyone try the new Steeple 102 (normal layout) on harder snow and bumps? (I know that's not its main purpose). Curious how the RES behaves on bumps.
Is the recommended mount on this ski more centered than the Wren 102?

I'd like to find a less jibby, more directional ski to compliment my Jeffrey, but I tend to be more center balanced skier...

Ordered GrizzlyCorn 186cm Kartel 98s to replace my beat "186cm" S3s. (Shut up, I really like them despite being too short and soft. Not very core of me, I know). Can't wait to see how they compare. I'm aiming for more stability and less speed limit without sacrificing the fun factor. I have high hopes because I love the crap out of my original Pillowfights. Thanks for making good stuff guys.

Will a 186 Billy Goat tour hold up as part of a two ski quiver ski for resort pow/cut up and trees for a 175# non-hucker? Assume other pair of skis will handle hard pack and crud.

FWIW, had a pair of 191 Caylors and liked them, but found them a little big. Not too stiff but too big. Had a pair of 186 Sickles and wanted more float. Sickles were not too soft. Looking for softish med stiff 186-ish ski.

Sure. In cut up snow and at speed the stock 186cm BG is going to be better, but the tour takes most of that fine and it a bit easier in powder and trees.

FWIW, if anybody is looking for a stiffer, damper version of any of the RES skis, I think the woodgrain topsheet for an extra $100 is a good deal (if you're already going to pay retail). The woodgrain adds stiffness and makes for an amazing, damp feel (not to mention it looks phenomenal and might even add durability...?). I estimated a 20%+ increase in stiffness over stock in the BGs. I think it's probably a little much for a jib-oriented ski, but I think it's perfect on the BG. The woodgrain makes a very even, round, stout flex in the long shovel, which I think pairs really well with the RES tip and mount point. Sure, you could stiffen them up in other ways (extra carbon, etc), but I really love the way the woodgrain BGs feel. I'm sure Scott or someone else can chime in on how other approaches would differ in feel, but I don't have any experience with them.

That said, I also ordered a pair of Jeffreys with the woodgrain in the hopes of getting a "playful charger" with the emphasis on charger. Frankly, I didn't think the woodgrain was the best choice for that design. I only have two days on them, so I definitely need more time on snow before saying anything definitive, but it seems like maybe the woodgrain was working against the design of the ski.

Just my unsolicited $0.02. I have no affiliation with ON3P, and I paid retail for both pairs of woodgrain skis (ouch!). The BGs were worth every cent. As of this writing, the Jeffreys were not, despite ON3P pulling out all the stops to make them for me before the end of my season. But I need to spend more time on them—and stop trying to ski them like a BG—before I write them off.

I ordered the Steeple 102 with a woodgrain topsheet.
Here's what ON3P had to say when I asked them about weight and stiffness for the woodgrain option:
"The veneer is slightly lighter, and will stiffen the ski up slightly vs the stock plastic topsheet."
