Your first paragraph was cool, but then you had to throw in this jab, when it was your post that attacked the choices other people have made and set yours up as superior. Seriously, you wonder why some people might "need to defend their way of life" when you called them "rats in a cage"? Try not to be such an asshole and maybe people wouldn't feel the need to defend their way of life. Especially when -- as your first paragraph hinted -- many of us have spent significant time in both places. Circumstances or choices have put us where we are, but only a very lucky few can make those choices without expecting some tradeoffs. Heck, even if I lived in a mountain town I'd be a weekender mostly, that's the nature of my job, a tradeoff I made based on my skillset and how I might be able to afford a decent and sustainable lifestyle. I made another tradeoff by living here, on the fringe of a metropolis, with way too many people around, but a good life in a relatively good place with lots of recreation around that doesn't require I-70. That's all we're all trying to do, and as I've told DaHeel and montanaskier numerous times, there's nothing qualitatively different between the front rangers who post here and the mountain towners, we're all skiers and outdoor folks and most of us have done time in both places. It seems like the mountain folks like to try and justify their choices just as much as the city folks.
I hear you on enjoying skiing with less crowds, we all enjoy that. I wish I was out there right now, especially after being out sick the last 5 days. Glad you're getting some.
