Was at Crystal with the kids today. They got mostly rain out of the storm, but it was snowing as we left. Green Valley is in good shape, Rainier and Forest Queen not so much. Hoping we get more out of this. I'm dying to get back to Alpental. The drive from Issaquah to Crystal was a killer when I'm used to 35 minutes door to door.

Finally made it up to Stevens yesterday. Lots of exposed boulders, creek beds, shrubs, etc. Snow on the front side was suprisingly good. They opened the new Jupiter Express on the backside, but the snow was variable at best back there. Surprised that they let people back there with all the exposed obstacles. Hoping for snow above 4000' out of Monday's system. They still need 3-5 feet to get to typical "early season conditions" IMO.

Pretty damn good snow was found somewhat near Crystal yesterday, all things considered.

There were moments getting there that I regretted not having boot crampons and a pair of technical ice tools... and my blanky just in case.

After much cursing, slithering and gymnastic down climbing. Un-tracked, reasonably consistent and soft snow was located and used up, several times.

No fucking clue what the soup was though.

I'm heading to baker with rain gear tomorrow, sadly, first day of the season. If anyone wants to rip a soaking turn or two I'll be on my own... dark grey coat, black pants, skiing on JJ's with MFD plates. Hope it gets cold.

I was planning on going to Mission Ridge around New Years, but it looks like there isn't much snow there. Is Stevens a better bet?

I can't speak to conditions at Stevens, but unless Mission gets a foot or two before New Years, I'd look elsewhere. Minimal terrain open when I was there on Friday, and even that was questionable.

Skinned laps on the backside of Stevens today. Snow above 5000' was great. 12" of wind deposited cream. Tasty. Backside will be opening tomorrow. Bring your skins and tour out to Highland bowl or further. Below 4800' it's pretty bad. inbounds at the resort is rock hard and variable.

Took a stroll out to great Scott bowl today. Other than dodging creeks streams and logs down low the snow coverage is pretty nice up high. There was about4 inches of loose powder over a crust. All in all not a bad place to visit. Full disclosure the drainages down low are sporty.

The runs from the top of 7th heaven had the best snow on the front side. Back side was closed Christmas day. Good coverage all things considered.

I thought it was a bit slick on a bunch of the runs but I haven't sharpened the skis I was on in 1-2 seasons. There was some smooth soft stuff on the back, but also some nasty crust under some of it. Best runs were off southern cross. Never made it to 7th.

I am starting to get antsy with this forecast. Front after front coming in at 4-6k snow levels then dropping an inch after the snow level drops. I am ready for "new winter".

I like it. The blatant lies brighten my day, and then in the evening I get to read onthesnow user reports from people who don't check NWAC.

Gwynwac is much more entertaining than NWAC, that's for sure.

For those contemplating a trip to Mt. Baker, this is all you really need to know.

For those of us not on the everyday call to Baker, what was the reported? Times must be tough

Where is everyone skiing? I just got back to the PNW and it looks absolutely miserable. Has anybody been out to paradise recently?

Get above 6k feet in Northern Wa or 7k in Southern. The rest is up to you

Total jongshow on the hill and the highway (it's the weekend after Christmas and Stevens is the only open resort south of Baker and north of Crystal). Get there before 10am if you want a guaranteed parking spot, we lucked-out today and leveraged the lunchtime displacement principle to get a spot rather close to the lifts for an 11:30am arrival).

It's full-on winter above 5k and there are a select few spots on the fringes of the resort still holding the goods (4-8" of consolidated powder on top of a semi-breakable rain crust). Expect to hike and wait in sizable lift lines. Skip the lodge, too.
