i'll be up quite often (not weather depending) unless it's raining. lines in tux and a coupla other drainages come in after the 1st decent snows with blows in December, sometimes November. I often skin the cat early am on storm days before venturing across the street for poking/powing around.

    ESAW 11/09 North Conway

    Recent email from Chris Joosen:

If you haven't signed up yet please do soon today. It will help our logistics volunteers greatly in relation to coffee, food, adult hops and barley, etc.

The Gaspe Avalanche Center will be with us again
Chief Ranger Ben Woodard and Bob Baribeau from Mahoosuc Rescue will talk about Baxter State Park's Avalanche issues on Mt. Katahdin,
A talk by one of the worlds premier snow physicists Sam Colebeck on wet snow,
Meteorologist Rebecca Scholand will discuss field weather observations in dynamic conditions in relation to avalanches
Tim Brown from AIARE will help us better understand avalanche problems and the value of quality communication.
Roger Damon will give us an update on eastern man made snow avalanches at ski areas
A round table discussion by renown international climbers in how they avoid avalanches in the big mountain
We are also trying to lock in another well know avalanche brain from Colorado via Sweden- consider it a welcome surprise if it all comes together.
    And much more.

And Bob is gonna be there chatting about Katahdin! I guess I'll have to rejoin Mahoosuc Rescue now so I can get on the trip this year.

    ESAW Update!

    ESAW Update!

Now that the world’s only superpower once again has a functioning gov’t, the USFS snow rangers have returned from furlough so we are closer to wrapping up our presentation line-up:

    • - Doug Richmond (of Bridger Bowl & the American Avalanche Institute) will present on “Human Behavior at the Ski Area Boundary” and discuss Bridger’s snow safety program.
    • - Continuing an annual theme of "Eastern avies somewhere other than the Prezzies" we will once again have Gaspe/Chic-Chocs, and new for this year will be Baxter/Katahdin.
    • - If you were there in 2011, then you definitely remember the woman who presented on upslope snow: a very intense and captivating speaker! So, she's back, this time on field wx obs in dynamic conditions.
    • - Tim Brown, a fully certified IFMGA guide, is flying in from CO to teach an avalanche instructor refresher course the following day. I'm not even going to bother listing his topic, since he was such a good presenter at our last refresher course two years ago that he can make any topic valuable and interesting!
    • - Roger Damon (who has been teaching avy courses since the 1960s) will present on avalanches in-bounds at ski resorts...in the East! (One of the incidents is kind of like the Monty Python castle swamp skit.)
    • - Panel discussion by int'l climbers on avoiding big avalanches on big mountains...ya know, like the equivalent of the Northeast Snowfield taking out Joe Dodge Lodge!
    • - A world's leading authority on snow physics, Sam Colebeck, will for the third year in a row present on something I can't understand at all. The topic is different this year, but since I won't be able to understand it, the topic is kind of irrelevant. Still fun being overwhelmed like this, plus the microscope pictures are really cool too!
    • - The nation’s foremost authority on avy rescue just happens to be passing through the East at this time during his typical intercontinental travels, so we’re hoping to wrangle him into a presentation also.
    • - AvaTech. So what is AvaTech? Googling reveals just kind of a shell website. But here is a teaser pic from their guest presentation at an avy course I was teaching this weekend -- it's essentially the future of snowpit hardness profiles ... today:

Plus raffle prizes from our sponsors:
    http://www.esaw.org/sponsors/

And many exhibitor displays, both during ESAW and the post-presentation socializing around the corner at IME:

American Alpine Club; ARVA; AvaTech; Combined Avy Education: AAA, AIARE, NSP; BCA; Barryvox/Mammut; Black Diamond/Pieps; G3; Combined Hagan / SkiMo.co / NE Rando Race Series; La Sportiva; Ortovox; Petzl & Adventure Medical Kits; RECCO

And as in prior years, registering on-line:
    http://www.esaw.org/registration/
... will help us greatly with planning the seating, refreshments, beer, etc.!

So there's snow blowing, Ullrfest happened and season passes are being bought....

    Time for a new ECRC!

Laser is AWOL in Florida and seems to have lost touch with winter. As the man with the morning BoB reports,I nominate VT-F to start the new thread...

    Anyone second?

Weird dream. I went to my local hill in august, and it was full of snow. Stoked, I grabbed my adrenalins with bd ascents to try them. The hill was frozen solid. I couldn't climb an inch.
