A 1969 (IIRC) VW Squareback is the earliest car I remember my parents having. I definitely do not recall it being fast, but it was rusty and loud.

Dad replaced it with a 1980 VW Dasher, which is the car that got handed down to me in 1988 or so. 4-cyl + 3-spd automatic = 35mph up I-80 in the Sierra.

But if I were to pick up another car, (the 633csi bimmer on ksl is calling my name, just no more space, and my wife would kill me) I would have 5 cars, I didn't mention the wifes 04 4Runner. Not sure where you draw the line for collection, but 5 cars for 2 drivers, or 4 cars for one driver (she ONLY drives the 4Runner) is a good sized quiver. We were there for a while back when I had the 944 race car.

Here is that bimmer on KSL. $3500 asking price. Car is in Salt Lake. It's a manual, and if you were to throw a better set of rims on there, and get the euro bumpers, you have a pretty nice looking classic BMW for cheap.

He had the 1968 "Fastback" with a 2.0 Type4 motor in it, IIRC, which was also used in the 4 banger 914s. Dunno if he bought it that way or did the conversion himself.

Back to the subject matter: My family had a VW Squareback with the stock 1.6L. A Squareback or Fastback with a rebuilt 1.8L or 2.0L would be a fun worthy project, decent snow car too.

Well I am on a budget, and skiing is expensive as well. You can flip it back on me if you want, but my 3 cars cost me less than my wife's used 04 4Runner. 3 cars for a total of about $12.5k, that's fairly budget to me. Yeah I spend a couple hundred here and there on maintenance, or the occasional upgrade, but I buy my parts used when I can and it makes sense, I perform all the work on my cars myself. Not sure what isn't budget minded about all that. We aren't stretching the food stamp budget to buy the milk each week.
If it doesn't fit your idea of budget minded, that's fine, forget the baby and the other stuff, and just focus on affordable interesting cars.

My Brother-in-Law in Breck had one of those as his daily driver, well - the 993 variant. As soon as it snowed he hated it - said it had too much power in the power/weight ratio and thus was faaaaar harder to drive & handle in snow than a simple Jeep (his wife's car.) He had an older 911 RWD that he said was more predictable in its handling on slick surfaces, and putting chains on the rear of a "normal" 911 makes for a much better ski car.

He LOVED it in the summer tho. Turns out that just because it's AWD doesn't mean "snow car" after all.

"Wang" 1985 Toyota 4Runner 22EFI, SAS, 4" OME lift 33" BFG's, T-100 tranny and transfer case. Daily driver and back country hunting rig.



"Mogwai" 1979 Ford F150, 300 I6, 2" front springs, 33" Mud Terrains, fabbed winch bumper. Ranch truck and good-timer.

What age? Things like the 2002 - where the owner's manual included a wiring diagram for the car and there's plenty of room, or most other BMWs/Benzs before the 80s (sedans of the age with a slushbox included push starting instructions for the slushy) are a different beast than the 80s and later critters.

Another bucket project is to make a rote sau replica/big benz rally car. A benz with a honking V8.

I almost bought one of these in 1984,

but ended up ordering a 1985 Mustang GT (and waiting 4 months), I have no idea why, I think I was tired of working on unreliable cars and thought maybe the Mustang wasn't as bad as it really was.
I guess I have a collection now but it's more practical than fun, Pick up, camper, island car, and off island car.

Ha on the Omega with the 260! I learned to drive in a 79 Olds Cutlass Cruiser with that motor and would definitely pick one up if it was worthy. I'd also love to have a late '60's/early '70's Vista Cruiser with the 350.

Other than the Jag and the GN/T Type these are all pretty affordable if you can find one that hasn't rotted away.
