In the last week, I've skied the 191 Billy Goat, 191 carbon Lhasa Fat, the 192 Wailer112RPC, and the 186 Ren. For my style and size (5'11", 165#), the Rens win. Still keeping the others, minus the RPC on loan from DPS, but I'd be perfectly happy on the Rens as a one-ski quiver.

for retail? best bet's probably over the summer, takes awhile to pump those things out. way more stoked on the graphic than this year's though, and on the other change...

Perfect. Now that I'm skiing on my favorite ski ever (12/13 196 Ren with MFD and THUNDERBOLT) you are prepping me to buy next year's. Can I just start mailing you money now?

Just decided on making a Ren 186 purchase.....am I gonna be pissed if I buy 11/12's or 12/13's when this "other change" comes out in summer.

Can you indicate what/how/if this "other change" will affect the skiability/performance? ie more user friendly, more chargability, more crows, less owls etc. ?

This will delay sales of the 12/13 I think! So better put the 12/13 owl rens on sale now please to compensate.

The Owl 12/13 graphic looks amazing in person. The trees are clear so you can see the core and fiberglass fibers. I think it's beautiful.

    Yup.

I didn't like the graphic when I saw it in the PDF that was leaked last year. I thought Eric missed the mark after about 5 straight models with mind blowing graphics, each better than the last.

Then I saw the owls in person. I was completely wrong. They are awesome. I actually like them better than the orange with the crows.

probably already said too much so hopefully i don't get in trouble here! i wouldn't worry too much about it though, it's more of a cosmetic change than anything. don't let it hold you back from picking some up now, you wouldn't want to miss any storms and not have these on your feet!

I am now the proud owner of #89 from 1st Gen 2010 and #849 from 3rd Gen 2012 and I can tell you that there are definitely differences in construction. I haven't skied on the ren.3's yet but visual inspection reveals a handfull of differences:

    - The wood core does not extend as far into the tip as it does in the 2010's. It's about an inch shorter

    - The tip spacer is thinner in the 2012's. The first 3-4 inches of the overall tip are thinner

    - The edges don't extend as far towards the tip by about 2 inches.

    - The rocker profile in the front is different. There is no difference in tip height but the rocker on the 2010's has a more uniform rise from the forebody. In fact, at about 8 inches from the front of the ski, the 2010 skis are actually higher off the ground than the 2012's. The 2012 tip gains back it's height in the final 4 or so inches where there is a more spherical shaped curve.

    - The wood core looks thinner on the 2012's but after measuring the width, both skis are very close to the same. Also hand flexing doesn't feel any different year top year. Maybe the wood is thinner but the glass in the layup is different? Not sure about this one...

As expected, fit and finish are improved from the 1st generation. My guess is that the thinner tip, shortened edge and more abrupt rise in the front all lend towards a better floating ski in deep pow.

Yup. I'm growing pleasantly surprised at how dialed these things are. Everything from the finish to the construction that yields this edge hold, to the shape, the flex. Everything. It's maneuverable and stable- two attributes that don't usually mix. I can't believe how fun it is.

4FRNT- you guys have changed skiing for me. I'm not used to this speed & agility in soft snow. Sometimes I get surprised at how fast a feature creeps up on me, like I have to learn to look further ahead in my line because I'm hauling so much ass.

I'm calling the Renegade the most coveted ski in the world right now.

killer, the fit and finish has definitely improved from year to year and that definitely rings true again coming up for 2014. also keep an eye out if you've been looking for 187 hoji's, they should be hitting stores again before long!

Hey just saw this, I am on the 186cm from 2010/2011. Can't actually remember where I had them mounted off the top of my head, but I know it's posted in this thread somewhere.

Also since owning the Renegades (this is my 3rd season), I haven't even bothered trying another pow ski for Whistler. So much fun.

Can you elaborate re the 187 Hoji supply.....seems to me there are not many Hojis, if any, out there??

Here is the response I got from a shop that carries 4FRNT (about the Hoji):

"We currently do not have any left in stock. We are waiting to hear back from 4FRNT as we are trying to get more inventory, early reports do not look good."

Try backcountry freeskier shop in MT
Great shop got my 196 RENs there and Hoji seems like a fun slimmer ren
I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

Finally got to ski my rens in real soft snow for the first time today and I'm ready to join you guys in raving about these skis.

Wow. They are amazing. They rip so hard yet are so controllable and fun. I doubt I'm even living up to their full potential yet.

Plain and simple I'm in love.

Do any of you guys have time on a lotus 120 pure as well as the renegade? I've been on the 190 flex 2 exclusively for the last two years and love it, but I would love to give these a try. Do the ren feel pretty heavy on your feet? I'm afraid that after 2 years of such a light ski the weight of the ren might be a deal breaker for me. I weigh 170, should I go 196 or 186? Sorry if this is a confusing post, thanks for any responses.

^^I wrote a lengthy comparison review of both last season that may or may not be useful: http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/s...07#post3700707

You're kind of right on the cusp of 186 and 196. Guess it depends on how much you want them to ski trees. I'd suggest the 186, unless you plan on gaining 10# in the near future.

186 Rens w/FKS 180s never feel heavy on my feet, but I suspect it will take a little getting used to after the L120s for 2 seasons.

Right on, thanks. I won't buy either length without demoing so ill just see for myself. I recently did a few runs on a 192 opus(I think it weighs about the same as the 196 ren) and I really hated it. I felt like the weight was pretty hindering coming from the 120. I have a hard time buying the shorter length of any ski, so I'll probably end up owning the 196 and getting worked a lot of the time. Oh well

I took a few runs on Auvgeek's earlier this season. After day 1, I started looking for a pair. Thankfully a couple cheap ones showed up here, and I bought a pair with a shit-ton of holes in it for way cheap from Kokopelli. Bomber construction, sth16s. I love my praxis concepts, loved the DPS RPC (while I had it) and love my 188 mtn jibs (damn, I love those skis). I've set a goal to charge and attack more this season. What I love about these is that they don't really leave you with much choice. You're attacking. The acceleration is unlike any ski I've ever been on before. You will be skiing faster. No question.

Reading the rest of this thread, I'd really like to try the new generation...

Anyone else that can write about the comparison between the 2010s and the 2012s/13s?
