Not to preach to the choir, but fuck, these skis rip! I got about 10ish days on them so far, everything but a super-duper deep day, and all I can say is, "Wow." Seriously, they haul ass in so many different situations and don't give up a thing. Mounted at 87cm from the tail fwiw

So after reading almost 33 pages....come to the conclusion that the renegade falls nicely between the mothership as a charger and a JJ for pow and tight trees and stuff....am I correct in that perception. I have ridden both, love how the moship crushed all in their path, and I love how the JJ is a hoot to throw around. Would be nice to have the combination.....ren's that ski?

Stop over thinking it and get some rens! Yes they charge but are very playful as well. Also don't let the size scare you, if you usually ski something in the 190 range then go with the 196.

this is terrible advice. you can ski the renegade like you'd ski a mothership but nothing like a JJ. there's no reason to size up in this ski unless you're a ripper at 200 pounds. you can toss them around in the trees pretty well but they aren't soft and playful like a JJ.

edit to add i fucking love the renegade but don't get me wrong, it's not a ski you can sick back and relax on.

Coming from a Super7 195 to the rens I did not notice them being any more difficult to ski. Granted I know how to carve a turn and ski with power but they are not the beast some tend to want to think they are. As compared to a traditional 190 they don't ski any bigger. That said, I'm not suggesting someone that traditionally skis a 185 to go to a 196, but I am suggesting not to size down on these, especially if you typically ski something over 190cm.

I am going with the exact same, radicals on 196s, and mounting this week.

If anyone else wants to chime in on where they have mounted their 196's and how it skis I would appreciate it.

I ended up having problems with the radicals and I didn't feel like I could trust them. For me I felt like they were not great at providing power transmission to the ski. I ended up changing back to trackers because they were a bit more burly. Realistically I do more inbounds and slackcountry. 92 from the tail seed good the time I did spend on it. I ended up mounting further rearward now because of hole conflicts.

Prob doesn't help. But that's my story.

Just mounted mine at 93 from the tail. 196 with thunderbolts and an MFD plate. Now all I need is some goddamn snow.

significantly stiffer. i rode the rens last year for a couple months before breaking my leg, they want to charge and straightline and do so with ease due their stiff flex and ridiculous stability. never felt like they had a speed limit, and that was pretty much all hardpack as it didn't snow much in UT before mid january. coming back from that injury i needed something a bit easier to ski to start the year off so i went hoji. they are insanely easy to to ski and can handle just about anything, i've found they're much more fun in soft snow than the renegade due to the softer tips planing up better and really just make skiing easy. more versatile for sure though you definitely lose some of the stability of the ren on hard snow and crud.

196s just arrived. Ski looks amazing!!! Still unsure about where to mount, but it is getting done tonight. I guess I'm thinking 90 from the tail. any last minute advice??

I am 6'6 210lbs and putting on radical FTs.

I re-mounted at 90.5 from the tail due to hole conflicts. No experience yet here.

Nothing new to add, but I feel obligated to chime in and support what everyone else is saying as these skis are the finest I have ever ridden.

    Me: 5'8" 165lb
36 winters on skis, 20 with a season pass. Ski fast.
296mm sole length Lange RS 130 with STH16s on the 186 mounted 87 from the tail. My shin has to be present on the front of the boot for the ski's sweet spot. Perfect mount. 88 would be okay for a more upright stance, but I'm happy now.

First, go straight and haul ass. Then you have the choice of arcing GS turns, throwing them sideways, or stopping on a dime. I'm blown away at their versatility. But they have to be skied, lazy skiers need not apply.

Again- the finest ski I have ever ridden.

Gramboh, are you on the 186 or 196? Im on the 86'ers, 5'9" 195. Pretty much identical size. Have my rens mounted at 87. Wondering if i should've done 86?

rode my AT boots w 196 rens the other day. mounted at 92 from tail measured along topsheet. this moved me up to 93 from tail - I experienced tip dive in deep wind deposits & dense pow at speed. 190 6' ex racer; more traditional vs neutral stance.

92 is $$$$$ in everything. can 1 cm really make that much difference? regardless, don't know if one would advise going north of that.

Any rocker shots of the 12/13?

The wording in this post just may push me over the edge to buy a pair of these. I want a ski that pushes me. Read tons about Rens. A turn radius that matches the ski's sidecut just makes sense. I can see doing 2 big rippin' high speed turns down chair 6 on these on a deep Baker day.

Any chance new 186 Rens ever go for less than $799? Wait 'til January or just buy em? Seems in previous years they have always sold out.

Anyone got 186's to sell (1 mount)?

    K

I have an unmounted pair of 11/12 (much sweeter orange/crow top sheets). A bit more tip curl than my 10/11s, a bit less rocker than 12/13.
    $700 shipped?
