    What Really Scares You?

I'm not sure what I am really scared of anymore, it is as if the unknown parts of our lives and world have been systematically debunked and described to the point where they have lost their ability to engender fear.

I figure the thing that scares me the most is my own mind:
For over a decade I've had a recurring nightmare wherein my inability to solve complicated mathematical equations leads to the death of my Mother.

    What really scares you?

Death or illness of child. That's about it. Not to concerned about my own death or illness, being destitute, whatever. The world is pretty fucked and I am ok with that. But having your kid screwed with is outside that.

damn, I'm bummed out now. 2 beer lunch today I think.

I just had to be put under for a medical procedure, and that freaked me out before and after. Especially after, when I was told that, to this day, it's still a very inexact science.
Seriously, my hand was shaking in the clinic. Creepy.

I started to have a similar night-terror when I was a kid. It wasn't exactly a concrete math problem - it was more like an abstract math problem that got out of control completely and was completely incomprehensible. Not being able to control it or understand it meant something along the lines of having to come to terms with my own mortality and dying.

Very fucking weird and scary dreams for a 10 year old kid to have to deal with and I had them on and off until college.

I had a pretty stressful childhood - so I assume it was tied to having no control over a rough situation but I eventually stopped having them when I moved away and found some level of calm in my life.

me too, one time I had this dream that my mom forgot to buy more of those great start breakfast sandwiches that I used to love - I ran down to check the freezer, and there was a new box sitting right there. Phew.

public speaking. Sitting in a conference room with 20 strangers talking about a project as a peer, no biggie. Make me stand and address those same people as an authority figure even if I am saying the same thing... fucking makes me a wreck.

A few weeks ago I had to teach a "lunch and learn" with 2 other people for 75 participants. I know the content cold but hell was it torture.

Other than that, not really much. I'm sure something will come up in the future but for now, I'm in a good place.

It is actually a very exact science, and very, very safe, but not perfect, and odd things can still happen. Your biggest worry is getting a TGR dentist as your anesthesiologist.

A possible serious illness in my wife or children always scares me.

As far as being afraid of things, what always puckers me is jumping off heights. Doesn't faze me in the least to climb, rappel, etc, but to jump off a cliff into a lake is tough for me. Even the high dive at a pool makes me hesitate. I can do it, but I have to steel myself. Diving is even worse.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

The fact that I have a chronic condition means I have to spend my life in a cube for the health care plan. And the possibility of not finding that cube job. I need one, like, last month. I only need 6 credits next semester to finish school.

I can't wait to be making $12/hr and begin working my way out of crushing debt for the rest of my life.

I don't actually plan on retiring. Also, I'm pretty sure there's a tree out there with my name on it. Who wants a dog?

As far as dying: I'm more scared of the much more likely event of reinjuring myself. It's not even the initial injury, it's the recovery (and the expense).
    No longer stuck.

dosages are initially based on body weight and average response in cohorts, and they fine tune it from there... how is that "exact"???

There are lots of things I can think of that scare me in a theoretical, far-off sort of way.

But concretely, I am regularly scared of falling off a god damn mountain.
that's all i can think of, but i'm sure there's something else...
