Coyote Problem

Apropos of pretty much nothing, I spent a lot of time last winter in the Mohawk Valley region of Upstate New York, and the coyotes there were unbelievable. Packs of 10-15 animals coming within feet of the house routinely. Despite a six month open season with no bag limits, those things are everywhere. Very common to hear three different packs hunting on still winter nights.

Unless everybody gets serious, those guys are there to stay. I don't know where you are, but if it's anything like that I don't think killing a few is gonna do much good. Up there in NY people have built fenced yards for their dogs (on farms where the dogs have always run free), to protect them from the coyotes. I think you need to pay attention to food sources and keep the cat in the house for a while at least.

Seconded. We have a guardian llama with the sheep now called Janet Reno. Janet is a mean bitch and naturally protective of her flock.

Do some research before you kill a coyote. I've read that killing one can disrupt the pack, and you end up with more coyotes. I would say every 3rd? night they howl nearby, one of our dogs howls back, wakes us up, etc. I could easily kill one or many as they are usually very close, (like haven't hit them with a thrown rock, but just miss), move slow and nobody here gives as shit. We'll see. For now, if its dusk and I'm in the mood, I'll go chase them.

I lost one of my cats years ago due to coyotes. All we found was her head and upper torso with forelimbs still attached. Was a tragic end for a really awesome little feline. Kill the bastards. No matter how cute you think they are, they won't hesitate to tear your pets up.

Re:40lb raccoon...my wife's uncle shot one in his chicken yard that was 45lbs...this in an area where the coyotes average 40lbs...I have a pic somewhere of it hanging on the scale...HUGE

Yeah that's not far at all. I was mainly about 30 or so miles NW of Albany, so maybe 50 (?) miles from the VT border.

You may not need to do anything...unless they are coming very close or are aggressive.

Had a small pack ~4-5 near my house in S. VT a few years ago. They stayed for about 6 months Spring -Late Fall and I did not see them again. They were shy so I only saw the pack once, but heard them a lot. Since there's no season on hunting coyotes in VT, I think bored deer hunters get them during deer season. They tend to have a decent sized range. There's also a trapping season for coyotes in VT in the fall/winter and they disappear that way too.

I agree. The bottom line is if you live in an area with coyotes you're playing with fire letting your cats go outside. And why shoot the coyotes? They are just doing what comes naturally. Keep in mind cats are out there hunting all kinds of critters, too. Should someone shoot them?

Also Coyotes are keeping the mice, rats, raccoons, and other pests away. So even if you could kill of all the coyotes, you'd likely have a host of other pests. And killing a few can disrupt the pack and result in more pups, more coyotes in some circumstances.

Face it, outdoor cats have a short life expectancy with 'yotes around. It is just a fact of life here. Shooting a few with temporarily reduce to population, but it won't solve the problem. Same with coons. Those little bastards tear up my pants and trash my ponds, but they are just doing what they do, and since we are living in their territory I just have to deal with it.

Some cats are coyote wise, others not so. I had one patient that dies of renal failure at 19, but never spent a minute inside in all those years. Live on a citrus ranch near the river, so 'yotes were dime a dozen. I would have liked to clone that cat.

I think there is more of a problem with aggressive coyotes out east where they are a dominate species. Here there are bear, mostly black but sometimes brown, wolves, cougars, foxes. So the coyotes fill a niche and are pretty low profile. I hear them all the time and see their scat but never see them. In Calgary you could see them all the time even downtown on the bike paths.

i remember hearing "thump,thump,thump,thump" while hanging out on the golf course round dusk, having a few beers. I see these two dogs heading down the fairway towards us. Turns out to be a massive black lab driving a coyote all the way from, to and past us on the fairway.

the fuckers must've been at top speed for the 2-300 yards. It was quite a scene. Almost cartoonish. Lab halted as soon as the thing went into the brush, remarkably enough. I was shocked and madly impressed. Fastest shit i've ever seen. I think the lab would've won the fight, despite being such happy friendly beasts, they're no slouches.

Lone coyote takes off running from a dog, and the dog chases only to be shortly surrounded. They tried it with my blue heeler german shepard mix in aspen, I was terrified when I saw him surrounded, coyote #2 nipped at his heels after he corned coyote #1, #2 promptly got bit right on the face and coyotes 1-4 scattered with a yelp but I don't think thats the typical ending.

My advice? Get a wolf. Or get more dogs. Big tough ones with strong prey drives.

Seriously I'd say just kill them. I'm not bloodthirsty and although I've hunted for meat I take no pleasure in the killing of anything, feral hogs, coyotes, and possibly rabits are fair game for full on slaughter.

Yea, I agree. I have barn cats and the mortality rate is high, but the strong/smart survive. I had a 15 year old cat that just passed that was the greatest cat ever!

Use common sense, don't feed your animals outside and try to reduce any food source for the coyotes. I have three big dogs and they won't mess with them together. But I've seen 3 or 4 stalking even my biggest, when he's alone. They don't mess with the horses, but they eat there shit and like to dust themselves in the corral.

Coyotes also go ape shit for trains? I have a freight line about a quarter mile from my house and they go fucking wild ten minutes before I can hear it coming?

Yep, we used to live on a golf course, apparently these are favorite areas for Coyotes. One night I see my dog chasing another dog down the fairway, when he gets to a clump of trees, he gets spooked and hauls ass faster than I've ever seen back to the house and in the door, with a coyote chasing him. Must have had a few buddies waiting in the trees.

I was going to get a pellet gun and start popping the little fuckers in the ass to scare them off. Couldn't shoot a real gun because we were across the hwy from the elementary school and I sure as hell wasn't gonna be "That Guy" on the evening news.

Honestly, I wouldn't have any qualms killing a coyote that was fucking with my animals. Those damn things are a dime a dozen and you'll never kill them all off. But, scaring them away is the trick from what I've heard.

An old vet I know who owns a sheep farm said that it's best to kill them when you can and scare them off when you can't kill them. Even throwing rocks and making loud noises can do the trick.

I have heard of that , one coyote "saying" come play while 3-4 of his buddies wait to eat dog if its lured in. But a friends dog , big country dog, plays with coyotes all the time. Now this dog is pretty tough as its left out over night to chase away the bears form the fruit trees. You need this dog.
