Enjoy it now: Friday the 21st is the last full day of astronomical summer, as the Sun crosses the autumnal equinox in Virgo at 7:49 PDT on Saturday the 22nd, when it rises due east, sets due west, and the durations of day and night (including twilight) are more or less equal. It also technically sets at the north pole and rises at the south pole.

Pretty darn nice here in Santa Cruz for the last day of summer. No fog. Warm. Still a bit of a breeze, but that should stop, at least for a bit, next week. I don't really see the rain/snow thing coming to pass too soon, but we will be getting waves. And this 8 day model has BC getting plowed.

Does anyone want to trade trad skills for BC skills?

Meaning, I'm looking for someone to help me get learned in trad climbing: better rope skills, rack management, placements, etc etc, and I would be happy to trade what I know about ski touring - terrain, gear, thought process, educational resources, "learning the snow," snow camping experiences etc.

Kind of random, but perfect timing - considering that climbing time is now and by the time the trad climbing is wound down, switching mental gears to touring will be coming up!
What are you talking about - I climbed at the Leap post Thanksgiving last year. You just need to get a pension for suffering cold hands on wet rock. Perfect alpine climbing training

Seriously, first read Long's anchoring book. Second, read the latest accidents in north american mountaineering so you realized how dangerous rappelling is. Finally, obviously I will take you climbing whenever I go.

    SuperHeroes of Stoke

Well, I just got (will-call) Tix for me, Cinders & the_immaculateDeception to go see Superheroes of Stoke!
Hope to see some of you Maggots there, too.

Also, on the subject of RaccoonFace...
...RacoonFace came out of nowhere to "own" all the threads (like Padded room special collection of junk, and the Tahoe Thread) - early bird gets the worm!
You'd better start the 12/13 Tahoe thread today, or you won't be as cool as RacoonFace!
    You're not being fair here.
There is way more to it than that. You must have a short memory.
When he started the Tahoe threads, he always takes great pains to post up a bunch of highly useful information on the 1st page. Last year he even made it cellphone friendly, I think.
And I dunno about you, but in the season, it's sometimes the only thing I look at on here.

As for Special Collection...part 2. You are way off here too, afaik.
    Why part 2?
Because RF noticed the original thread got deleted, so he did his best to resurect it. Might have saved some of the original thread too. I dunno.

I appreciate his efforts. Rock On Raccoon Face! Don't let the h8ers bring you down!

90 in Reno and 75 at the Lake today. Went SUPing for an hour and half and had the whole place to myself.

^ hot as fuck in LA today, but the water at Manhattan was 70 degrees and the shorebreak was fun. Went bodysurfing for half an hour and had the beach to myself. Bring on the turn.

The Dream Factory was more like a documentary on Alaska's ski history than a ski movie.

It was cool meeting Daron Ralves. He was really cool to talk to and super nice to my son.

While we're on the topic of climbing. I've got the gear and anchor building skills to safely set up TR's and would be happy to do some TR or easy sport climbing with folks (just getting into sport). I have zero trad experience (but a good start on a rack) but would love to do some easy routes and have someone show me the ropes (following, probably). Just throwing that out there...

Seems like TGR just sort of mailed this one in without a lot of effort.

I was there with my two kids. One decided Angry Birds was more interesting and the other was falling asleep towards the end. What do you think the turnout was like 20-30 people? Maybe they heard it sucked and decided to stay home.

    $42...oh well.

Btw, weather has gone fall up here. Cloudy and cool. Wind picking up in the trees.

Me, Vets, and Powderhound hit up East East Bowl above Winnemucca Lake yesterday. It has definitely started to show signs of fall. I camped in my Taco Mama Saturday night just outside Woods Lake and it was windy and chilly. Ditto for yesterday up above WL; windy and chilly to the point of needing an extra layer beyond the traditional shorts and t-shirt accoutrements of summer patch skiing. It was 59 degrees when we left for home around 5 pm.
That said it was 80+ in Sacto around 8 pm.
