Does anybody tow a travel trailer in the winter? Would that be retarded on snow and ice?
I do sometimes. When there is snow and ice, it is not really fun. There is a lot of dynamics at play that are working against you all the time. If you have a fifth wheel, it is safer and easier, but a bumper pull is the one you probably have and are asking about.
I tow a 21 ft Bigfoot that weighs about 6000lbs packed and ready. My truck is a 3/4 ton that weighs in at 7500 lbs and is 4X4 with AT tires.
My experience is that when there is snow it is not to bad, you just have to slow down way ahead of corners and don't mess around. You have to be on the ball. When there is ice, it can get quite scary and downright dangerous. The worst is coming down a hill and around a corner. The trailer just wants to pendulum out to the side and take the truck with you. I can tell you I have shat my pants a couple times.
If your trailer weighs less then half of your truck, like a sled trailer or something, it will have little (but some) effect. When you get close to, or over the trucks weight, its a new game.
Lots of guys do it all winter long with sled trailers and such, so it is not impossible. But a sled trailer has its weight all down low on the axles with only a little bit of weight wrapped around it. An Rv with water and cabinetry and all things RV in it, is different.
All I can say is if you do it, be very careful, plan lots of time, and look into the wire chains for the trailers rear axle. It can be a god saver coming down a pass during an awful freeze and ice cycle. And pack the trailer very carefully to make sure you have the right tongue weight.
Man, It was great...
$2500 truck (22RE with solid front axle). Invested about $500 in camper.
Still needs windows. Sets up in about 1 minute. 10 gallon fresh water tank under bed. 40w solar, two batteries in line with alternator. Goofy looking, but affordable and no worries when trashing on it.

Put some windows in, now it needs storm flaps. Done for now......too hot to be outside.

Thanks, called the guy off craigslist. He had moved from montana to l.a. and was getting tickets parking it on the street nightly.
Tower Se7en was his band name based on the building from 9.11 I told him if he would meet me at l.a.x. I wouldn't haggle him on the price. Picked up by the band at about 11pm finished the deal about 1am spent the first night in a walmart parking lot. I was hoping the lettering was vinyl, but it is paint. I didn't haggle. I now believe the cryptic "Tower Se7en" keeps riff raff from screwing with me at night.
