    Rich-O-Meter

"Through the magic of the Internet, and World Bank income data, we can now get an answer. Some creative folks in London have come up with what they call the “global rich list” — a kind of Rich-O-Meter that allows you to plug in your income data and see where you rank. Try it, it’s fun. And it’s virtually guaranteed to give you an ego boost."

$5k/yr puts you in the top 14.39%. $1000 in the top 44%

Crazy. According to that thing there are only 786,570 people richer than me (well, my wife and I combined) in the world. Not sure I buy that. It also says there are only 107,565 people globally who make more than $1M.

It's based on data from 1988 & 1993 and using a population from 2006 (6.0 billion, it'd be about 5.2 billion in 1990); and then they're only using a few data points (just estimations by the World Bank) and extrapolating a curve from them. Just to account for inflation you'd probably have to deflate your income by 50%. And if you have dependents you'd have to split your household income with them too.

On top of that, plug in $1,000,000 and then run $250,000. You will get the same ranking. There's a definite lack of precision in their calculations.

But I can see how a lot of people would see this and hear the message they're trying to give, which is probably all they care about.

    its actually even crazier.

considering the average US citizen has 50k in savings, you gotta figure most of the world has no savings.

so, if you make 50k or more and have any savings; youre probably in the top .5%

No way the average American has 50 grand in savings. More like 100 grand of debt.

So many people go boom then bust, so often, that number might seem wrong, but is not (to keep a long story short).

$850 / year is the 50th percentile. But I hear property taxes in Somalia are super low.

For reference, the LAST family in the 1% has a net worth of only $6M. The average income of the 1% is $514,600.

Its a lot lower than I would have guessed.

$14,710 is the poverty level in the USA for a 2 person household.

Our POOR are richer than 87.7% of the people on the planet.

    Just sayin'

Wow. My quiver at retail costs more than some make in their whole life. Good thing I didn't pay retail.

Well, given a 1988 baseline, I sorta doubt there would be a whopping 50%inflation/deflation factor. That seems a little high, no?

"A new study by the National Bureau of Economic Research shows 50% of Americans would struggle to come up with $2,000 in a pinch, for example in the event of an unanticipated car or home repair, a large medical bill or legal expenses.

Roughly 28% said they "certainly" would not be able to cope with an unexpected $2,000 bill if they had to come up with the money in 30 days, and another 22% said they "probably" would not be to able to cope." from cnnmoney.com by Annalyn Censky 5/24/11

It was a quick guess made from 3% per year. Though a quick Google search found this calculator which gets a similar result: http://inflationdata.com/Inflation/I...Calculator.asp
