    group dymanics ...

would you team up with a drunken ozy snowboarder ???

or some random newbie from cowtown ...

that crew and a few others have seen far too much,
and we're their to enjoy ourselves not babysit.
sorry people if you feel offended,
but 5 or more in a group is a shitshow.
prove yourself at the resort and slackcountry before tagging along into that terrain.

shit I'm good at offending people, did it work ???
We, the RATBAGGERS, formally axcept our duty is to trigger avalaches on all skiers ...

Maybe you should ask your mom if I've proven myself.

Seriously though., I didn't expect to meet up with any of you long time tgr dudes any time soon. So I'm looking to the other JONGS. (I'm pretty sure I don't suck btw.)

Seriously? We're pretty welcoming actually. Not sure how you came to that conclusion, but out of every one posting in this thread, there are probably only 5 or 6 people that I have yet to share turns with.

There's nothing hush hush about it. Shadam pretty much did nail it for the most part (except for the proving thing IMO). At a certain size group, with everyone having their own idea of what should be skied it becomes a shit show. It's not a Whistler snowpack. The people I ski with mostly all agreed on this long ago, and it's a direct result of group dynamic issues that could cause problems that were recognized and this is part of how we chose to address it. It's different when there is a person playing "leader" with a bunch of less experienced people, however when it's a group of peers all with strong opions...

If there's already a group of people heading out, I don't think it's unreasonable to not put up invites online. I'm looking forward to getting out with more people here, but I don't think anyone here, or anywhere for that matter, is going to post up if they already have plans. We're not a hiking club where you see 10-15 people cluster fucks heading out at a time.

nicely done. Was Aqua Toque part of your posse?
Nope, never met him and we were the only ones on the little hw side.

right on, t2c.. glad to hear! I wasn't poking at you.. it was more of a broad thought that I haven't heard of many people here doing outings yet.. but I have no doubt that it's just because little is open or 'skiable' yet so there isn't a lot going on

Was there any sign of SH or had it just stopped snowing when you were there? Did you guys look at the pack at all?

Way to get after it, looks like you got WAY better conditions then i did!

I have to agree with what has been posted so far. Bigger groups are just cause for some major cluster fucks. Plus why share all the fluffy glory when you can keep it for you and and your buds. Sharing is not caring.

K so your set up then. Cool. No surprise that a seasoned vet like yourself has no shortage of touring buddies.

Was just trying to throw it out there that I'm available in December. Most of my friends snowboard and the only other guy I know is a weekender so its hard to get fresh stuff. If we get something going, great. If not, whatever....

Have to agree with this. Particularly with someone who is new who you don't know their abilities and risk tolerances. It's easier to manage this unknown in a smaller group.

Looking at my post when I said "it's not a Whistler snowpack"...there's not really any context there, what I am saying is especially at this time of year we don't have gobs of options and alot of times the close go to spots are pretty limited to certain terrain as far as what's skiable...doesn't take long at all for them to get beat on.

Was there any sign of SH or had it just stopped snowing when you were there? Did you guys look at the pack at all?
It stopped snowing yesterday in the a.m. No new overnight last night. There was some new surface hoar at treeline in sheltered areas from last night. There had been enough wind overnight last night to have rid of it above treeline where we were in more breezy areas, which in turn left some really light wind effect. Ski quality was definately better yesterday but still pretty good today. Some small pockets of thin isolated slab <10cm just starting to form up in some spots. Wind was light today. Not really much to the snowpack to look at right now....like 50cm? (pretty variable) for the most part top 20ish of which is the storm snow. Just enough crust to keep you off the ground in the "deeper" spots lol. I woulnd't try skiing the thinner spots though. North aspect is carrying worth shit...the facetts are coming along "nicely" and the crust is broken down enough that it's not keeping you off the ground for turns...but with that said we didn't try to go very high on any north aspects as in that little zone it runs in to a headwall at a fairly low elevation. Did try a few turns in some north finger features and hit ground on every turn (2350-ish metres). Didn't measure anything or take details these are all just general observations...

BTW when heading out I typically overlook posts pretty quickly when ride shares are specific to people from Calgary since i'm in Banff and it assumes that a ride out is needed.

There is a bit of a wild card factor there too. I would hate to meet up with some random after saying how good the skiing is, only to have their ski ability be on the "wobbly" side and have them take a digger in to rock. Let's face it, there may be enough to ski on, but even a moderate speed fall is enough to break yourself on if you fall over in this stuff....not enough there for a cusion.

    Oh, snap!

Relax, people, plenty of local mags are looking for touring partners at times during the season. In fact several people posted just that in this thread a bunch of pages ago. Maybe find that and send a PM with a bit of info about yourself and when you are typically available, etc.

What usually doesn't work is posting someone like "heading to such and such a place tomorrow, does anyone want to meet up?"

It's definitely easier to get to know people once the resorts open, and then when you run into a maggot can do a couple of runs and find out even briefly if that person seems like someone you would tour with. (and vice versa.) Hell, it only took me one gondola ride at KH to know I'd never spend five minutes in the backcountry with Shadam.

But seriously, there will be plenty of opportunities during the season. No one I know has such a steady crew that they are never in need of a new person - forum jong or longtime TGR poster.

Skied Bow Summit today. It was not epic, but damn it felt good to get out there and make a few turns! Rogers next weekend.
Flying the Bluehouse colors in Western Canada! Let me know if you want some rad skis!!

"He is god of snow; the one called Ullr. Son of Sif, step son of Thor. He is so fierce a bowman and ski-runner that none may contend! He is quite beautiful to look upon and has all the characteristics of a warrior. It is wise to invoke the name of Ullr in duels!"

What this thread needs to get back on track is more cowbell

Today round 2. We started by headlamp to get up there before the shit show. Ran in to Mex and Fatmike, (who as it turns out is not 6'2 and 250 lbs as his name would suggest) and joined for a lap.

Jillygoat and Sentinel sussing it out....just after they got to the bottom is when Mex rolled up.

    Sentinel

    Jillygoat

    Mex

    not so Fatmike

By memory there were 25 other people that rolled in throughout the morning. Shit show. Sadly, damned near every one followed the uptrack to end up starting the day skiing the same totally hammered slope that was already beat down. I found it mildly amusing.

I know what you're saying about noobs though too. If you've got a solid base (possible, living in Canmore), why bother with them....

I tried my cousin on mountain climbing thinking he'd be good cuz he had climbing lessons and he's family etc. He was good on the rocks and all but I did all the route finding, with him second guessing me at EVERY step (even calling me out). Just a mega downer kind of day... some people just break down when it comes to the slogging. Anyway whatever Ill interview touring buddies at fucking KH or join the alpine club if thats what it takes. I'm getting old enough to realize that I might be running out of time to slay mountains. I gotta reverse course, learn how to ice climb and contribute something to biglines.

Added: maybe not the iceclimbing bit.... but I think the biglines thing is within reach. Observation peak's been done I think.. What about Mistaya?

On an other note , i had to work but still snuck in an hour at the ice rin.. i mean norquay. it was knee deep guys, you missed out . Forgot to charge the go pro tho ,

Alpine Club of Canada in Canmore has alot of climber skier types going through there...not sure how much it costs to stay there though. I have no idea what good pricing is for lodging in Banff. Drop a PM when you get out here, we could be anywhere chasing snow then. We normally don't know what we are doing until the morning or night before at any given time let alone months in advance.

This noob had some good first turns of the year... despite <1 hr of sleep and jellow legs from a late hockey game last night.

T2C, good meeting up with you guys today. Though next time you post up so much stoke and then go back the next day for seconds, you should probably have more beer with you, as you're bound to bump into some mags....wait, maybe it was us that shoulda brought the beer

All the talk about rocking the mountains on 1 hr sleep reminds me of a guy I used to go to school with who also went by the name of Mike and now that I know you're not fat. hmmm... You don't happen to be a tele guy who's obsessed with both science and avalanches? That's pretty rad. lol.

This is getting weird. My name is Mike and I spend a fair amount of my winter heading up to the mountains with an hour's sleep if that.
