    which lens should I buy?

Right now all I have for my t1i is the 18-55 kit lens that came with it. Most of what I shoot is landscapes, and when I'm not shooting landscapes I'm shooting skateboarding, snowboarding and the like. I'm planning on picking up this lens so I have something a little longer, but for the landscapes and skateboarding I'd really like to have something wide, perhaps even really wide so which do I choose?

this which seems to be pretty popular around here

    -or-

    this

my concern with the fisheye zoom would be the distortion factor which I wouldn't mind on the skate/snow shots, but would probably get distracting on landscapes. What say you?

    Thanks.

edit: I think this means I've entered the gear faggotry stage

    The 10 -17 vs the 10 - 22:

They have the same range at the wide end, so they will both distort/curve images.

At the far end they are a 17 vs. a 22, I'd take the extra range of the 22. At 17 there is still noticeable distortion/curve; with the 22, it is less noticeable.

Go for the 10-22 IMHO, great lens.

Just picked up the sigma 10-20 - fuckin love it. Great lens, super wide, and you can get some really cool effects out of the distortion. Look at the British Virgin Islands TR I just put up in the padded room. These were taken with the 10-20. I see it being on my body a lot this summer.

They don't have the same range at the wide end though if you look at the specs. The fisheye's range of view is from 180 to 100 while the 10-20's range is from 102.4 to 63.8.

edit: jce, great shots...what sort of filters are you using?

You are correct. Sorry I must have missed the fisheye aspect somehow. My bad.

Fisheye to me has a very specific (read: limited) use. It seems the rest of your quiver is based around versatility. If you want to stick with that theme, take the 10-22/20.

I'd still take the 10-22/20 as it is a great lens and will be more versatile.

Yeah, that's just it....in a perfect world (one where I had more disposible income ) I would buy both; but I you're right about the fisheye being kinda limited. When I think seriously about the majority of the stuff I wanna be shooting, I think the 10-20 will work quite nicely. Thank you for your help man.

check fred miranda buy/sell for the sigma 10-20. I was on a tight budget too and picked up mine for 350 shipped and paypaled.

I think you will love it - an even if you don't you could turn around and sell it for the same price you bought it.
