Anyone get their hands on one of these? I'm really thinking about it since my old P&S just died. It looks pretty interesting with the function ring on the front.

Initially a downer on it, I bought one and am pretty pleased with it in the limited use I've had. Pocketable, powerful, the ring is cool. Couple other maggots have them I believe (hop, ???)
I have one and have been shooting with it for a month or so now. The ability to shoot in manual/Tv/Av is excellent and I dig the rings. I do find that every once in a while I will accidentally turn the rear ring with my thumb.
It's pretty much making the short lenses for my dSLR obsolete.

I went with it, read some reviews that claimed it is better than the G11, and it fits in a pocket. Can't beat that.
how is it for low light? I don't expect a P&S to be able to compete with my DSLR for night shots, but is it at least somewhat better than a normal P&S

So far so good. f2.0 and I've shot at iso800 with little to no noise. I haven't needed to go farther than that.

Bump.
Additional thoughts from people who own one of these? Want to replace my old SD500 and I think this could be the ticket.
Carl, were your South Asia TRs shot with it?
I've always been an "optical viewfinder required" person for cameras, due mainly to finding it easier to keep a moving skier in the frame when they get closer. Does the processor on the S90 keep the LCD up to speed such that the viewfinder isn't as necessary in the situation I described? Nice to have a viewfinder if the LCD gets cracked too, but at that point I'd replace it anyway.
Thanks in advance. Cool photos taken with said camera appreciated.![]()
I got it and love it. Even got asked for some things I shot with it for a local magazine for the cover. We'll see if they use it...I doubt it but you never know.
I also bought the underwater housing for it and I gotta say - it's dope. I went out with Scott Gaffney about three weeks ago and bobbed around in the waves of Tahoe and shot him surfing windswell and was pretty pleased with the shots I got given that it was snowing sideways in 50mph winds.

I got lots of plans for underwater shots I wanna take with it this summer when it warms up a little bit in Tahoe and Donner Lakes, and fishing in the Truckee River, and also surfing down in Santa Cruz. I know it's not an SLR, but for $570 I have a small 10MP waterproof camera that shoots in M.
I got to play with one of these and a pano lumix lx3 recently, and I have to say I liked the panasonic a bit more. These 2 have been compared a lot, and are pretty similar, but I like the looks of the lx3 a bit more and I like the controls.

at least worth a look if you're looking into a new camera
Damn Grant, that windswell looks better than the ocean that I've been surfing for the past week.![]()

^I traded in my LX3 for the S90. I like it so much more. It's just easier and kills the low light and the ring functions are the shizzle.
No viewfinder is no issue for me. I can see the shit on a bright sunny day, through my polarized Oakley sunglasses.

an alternative

basically its the s90 in a smaller body, smaller sensor, without raw but with hd video and 3.7fps with unlimited buffer. though the lack of buttons on the thing probably means its a pain in the ass to actually use..
damn, that looks pretty awesome.

Except for the lack of RAW and a smaller sensor (higher noise).
Don't buy the DIGIC-4 hype, you get high noise at low light and long exposures in Canon CMOS until you get a 5D.
The 3.7 fps is nice though if you shoot things that move.
Lane, what housing are you using for the S90? Canon or other?

The Canon WP-DC35. It was $179 I think. It's purpose built for the s90, waterproof to ~140 feet.
Only complaint is that you can't spin the flat wheel on the back of the camera, so it takes an extra step in M mode to change settings with the control ring in the front because you have to switch between shutter and aperture. I typically just use Av or Tv to circumvent this.
Definitely a solid camera. I've finally been able to get out and take it on a few hikes, one this w/e in some horrendously low/flat light. Pics came out amazing, much better than I would have expected. Probably not the best reviewer as this is the first "good" camera I've ever had, but my sister who's big into photography and went to school for photo imaging loves it, and may be getting one so she doesnt have to always lug her SLR's around.

^I paid about $430 for mine, I think, but that was back in December or January.

I paid 399 for the Adorama kit w/ an 8gig card, extra battery, lowepro case, and crappy little cleaning supply kit.
