Trying to pin this on someone?
It was an outdated design that he hoarded.

They were Tyrolias that were not indemnified.

    Pickels,

Thanks for the info, I was not trying to "pin it on someone" I was just curious as to what was involved with the binding itself. from what you posted it looks like JT and Shane are doing it all themselves.

I was under the impression that they had started using Dukes due to the unreliability of the Tyrolias in no-fall terrain. I know they had straps going to their legs to release them maybe with some sort of pulley system.

FYI- When Shane's skis arrived back to the states, BASE friends tested the bindings and found nothing wrong with the release mechanisms. Essentially they have no clue as to why the skis wouldn't release.

    Interesting information.

This is interesting, being an AMF guy way back in the day, these binding where on every pair of my skis. I wondered when he pulled up on the heel leaver, if the air pressure/wind forced the ski onto the boot, no allowing it to release and fall away.
    Either way, what a disaster.

I suppose it's possible. But why that would happen on the 700-some-oddth time -- to both skis -- and never before, is beyond me.

As the guy who posted this:

I can tell you guys when I heard the news, I had that sinking feeling that I could have somehow contributed to his death.

Thanks for posting about the binding tests that his buddies did after the fact. That makes me feel a little better.

Here's our PM's when the Tyrolia hunt was on. He PM'd me a lot of personal info as you can see, just a down to earth guy in a rush to get the job done. Just before his death, I sent some Tyrolias to another magg who wanted them for the same reason...

Went by the Goodwill and they have some 490 Pros DIN to 10, Black, Blue, and Pink. They are in a set with a ski bag for $16. Kinda pricey, will see if I can get them for less(Do you want me to buy them for $16?). I scour the thrift stores on a regular basis. Let me know if you have any preferences in the model or color. I'd be more than happy to supply you guys with these on a regular basis for my cost or trade for some ski porn.

    Steve,
You're the man! Please send us all 3. Pay top dollar!
Thank you very much! If you could please send them to this address that would be great! We need them by tuesday of next week at the latest so the sooner the better. We will pay you back for any shipping charges and for what you feel is fair for the bindings and your time. Thank you very much!

I didn't know Shane, but that letter seems to sum up what he was all about. The mambas made me laugh, and also choked me up. It is a rare individual that can do both at once.

    Peace Shane.

I've been curious about how the leg straps were designed to interface with the binding. Do parts of the straps/handles stay in the wingsuit after release? Or do all parts of the straps/handles fall away with the released skis?
