That's funny. My parents divorced when I was really young and I ended up spending a lot of time with my Grandparents. If it weren't for my Grandpa I'd probably be a smelly, long-haired hippy instead of a smelly long-haired hillbilly.

Got a Baker side by side that was my Great-Grandfather's. It's somewhere in here.

Donkey Punch - you could always post photos and ask at THR. Somebody over there should be able to give you an idea.
No, it was covered under warranty. The cast on stock however was not cheap.

What is your point? Do you think somebody is going to come along and steal the list and start taking guns away? Any other conspiracy theories you would like to share?

Does it look anything like this (16 gauge)?:

The following is a 30-40 Krag that was my great-Grandfather's passed down through my dad. My dad's the one that cut the stock off forward of the sight to make it easier to carry when he lived up in Alaska. Stock used to extend all the way to the end of the barrel and have a bayonet mount.

Guess these used to be popular hunting rifles in the '40s and '50s, and I'm guessing by the flip-up sight that if you were good you could bring down a deer (or enemy soldier) at 2000 yards... Talk about lobbing a shot. I can't imagine being able to see something 2000 yards away well enough to aim at it with that sight much less have a hope in hell of hitting it.

The built-in magazine holds 5 bullets + one in the chamber. Real hard to find ammo and $$$ for it nowadays, makes it impractical to shoot. The flat metal plate on the end of the butt makes it uncomfortable to shoot when you do find bullets for it...

Love the Krag. I have a factory carbine that is unmolested. Kicks like a mule. Although not recognized much, it had the best bolt action of any military firearm made.

Garnered the honor of having the shortest lifespan of any military rifle. The side loading magazine was outdone by the stripper clip Mausers, and the military dumped them after 7 years of service.

I first thought you had a wierd variation of a carbine until I read the story.

Ammo can be found at the Old Western Scrounger

Sometimes Midwayusa.com has it as well

A little bit. It's probably a bit older than that one - it has Damascus barrels, exposed hammers and some engraving on the reciever.

I've heard of guys using handloads with very light charges, but I don't want to shoot it enough to try. Plus I don't have any shotshell reloading equiptment.

Any shells are safe. Just shove the barrels up your ass and have your boyfriend pull the trigger! Cures FULL-BLOWN AIDS too, assface.

Didn't know about the "best bolt action" bit but have always been impressed with how smooth and easy it is to work the bolt so not surprised.

Thanks for the link to an ammo supply but at $1.15 per round I think I'll hold off 'til I hit the lottery.

Was planning to buy a Mini 14 but now I dunno what I'm going to do. Ammo has become impossible to find and so damned expensive... Went shooting with some friends last weekend and went to three different gun shops. None had any .223, 7.62, or even .38. Well, one had one box of .38 target loads left...

I have been wanting a Sako TRG 42 in .338 Lapua for several years. Ammo today is about $6 a round.

All the ammo is out the roof if you can find it. Saw some .223 Privi M855 on Tuesday for $900 a case.

    The Sako

If you are thinking about getting a 338 you should consider one of these.

I have heard nothing but good things about this rifle and the really nice thing about it is that you can get different caliber barrels. That way you can choose between $6 round to a cheaper 243 round.

Saw that one. Interesting design. Haven't read much about it yet.

Looks like the TRG-42 is on at least an 8 month wait list.

Sawman, don't waste your money on a Mini-14. Save a few more bucks and pick up an AR-15 of some description. You can add a .22 lr kit for it and have the best of two guns in one. Cheap shooting, plus a very versatile platform. And you can shoot Wolf .223 steel cased in it which isn't too bad and is available. Federal 193 is available for around $400/thousand.

I have a Mini 14 and it has about an 8" group at 100 yards. Truly a POS.

    good cheap rifle?

so i might be moving onto 25 some acres next month, what a good cheep rifle to take out gophers with (with some resale value)? also what is the process to get one in Canada? don't want to spend to much money because i don't see my self staying there for to long, and when i move i think it will just end up lying around / getting sold.

Do they allow guns up there?

Not flame bait, but I thought you had to jump through some hoops to even have one.

I re-upped with the NRA who ever posted that link - thanks.

Huh. I've read quite a few positive reviews of the Mini 14 and liked it's compact size. No reviews claim it's the most accurate gun at long ranges but certainly better than 8" at 100 yards. Hmmmm, food for thought. Especially since I didn't know you could get a .22 lr kit for an AR 15. That *is* a nice option...

Posted this on another thread but it bears repeating:

Kari Byron is completely rad on so many different levels.

Plenty of .223 around here, but it's super expensive.

No 7.62x39. Good thing I stocked up.

The TRG-42 is.......rad. Have you seen the new Barrett .338 Lapua?

Yeah, there's two conversion kits - one's called the Ciener (ceiner? dunno) kit, and I don't remember the other one. Both basically work the same way, open up rifle, bolt carrier assembly comes out, put .22 bolt carrier in, close rifle, insert special .22 mag.

Cheaper than dirt has both, I believe - www.cheaperthandirt.com

Man, hard to look at 1000 rds of .223 just below 400 being a bargain
