Monterey shark attack

Wow - Scary - btw; Marina is just north of Monterey. It is inside on Monterey Bay, which is odd. Never had an encounter there. Mostly see the headless seals on the beach north of SC.

Did anyone catch the recent program aired during Discovery Channel "Shark Week" where the South Afircan guy famous for his images of Great Whites fully airborn goes to Ano Nuevo (north of Santa Cruz)?

Anyways the footage was impressive. Ano Nuevo is nortiously sharky, but seeing them pull up and spot a few sharks almost right away was pretty crazy. I surfed around there numerous times when I was living nearby and always figured the sharks were satisfied with grubbing on the fat seals, but seeing the number of sharks they saw out there in a short time was a bit eye opening. And yes they did witness the huge whites of the area fully airborn, impressive.

Well what I saw was just south of Monterey, maybe it was in Marina.I thought it was a seal or it was a California Giant seal , but it is strange the second fin at the back I saw was so much like a waning moon and thin and long and pointed.Back then I naturally thought shark.But from the flat middle fin I thought : seal or giant seal.But in Bergen I saw a shark with a totally flat middle fin and also heard sometimes any sharks have that because of fights.
I tell you I took 4 strokes for 50 yards and then about 4 more to get 100 yards back on the beach.For a few moments I was probably competing with world kayak champions.
Maybe I had been very very close to a great white in the attack as a side fin could have been the middle one and him wheeling to see me better and attack.

i'm glad i didn't see that. i surf ano very often. actually, my buddies were chased out last fall about an hour after i got out. i know they're there, i just don't want to think about it.


this year seems like it's going to be a sharky one. already two attacks. adding to that, the two attacks have happened before the real shark season has even started.

Even seeing a large bull seal in the water can scare you out of the water. I've been charged a few times in the bay by huge elephant seals. Never seen a GW, and think they are just a hoax - what sharks?

One of my favorite "secret" spots is right along the GW Highway, a trench that runs from Ano Nuevo Island to a rookery just south of there. That wave really jumps up and races across a ledge. The sharks keep the crowd factor down. perfect set up.

These have been posted here before. Some say debatable, though I've had a Marine Biologist confirm that this was indeed a GW curiously checking me out as I was dropping in on a small one at Scott's Creek.

WOW what a crazy story.

By: as told to Marcus Sanders August 29, 2007 A surfer named Todd Endris, 24, was attacked by a white shark at Marina State Beach in Monterey Bay at 10:45am on August 28th. He's in fair condition in a San Jose hospital. This was only the 10th recorded attack on a human being in Monterey County waters since 1952. Two of those attacks were fatal. Beaches from Marina to Moss Landing remain closed.

Wes Williams has been surfing in the Monterey Bay area for over 25 years. He was one of the surfers who saw yesterday's shark attack at Marina State Beach on Todd -- and who helped Todd to the beach. Surfline just caught up with Wes (who's on his way out the door for a Mex surf trip) and asked him to recount the chilling details of what happened yesterday. Stay tuned for more as it develops. --Ed

What follows is his account:
The surf was pretty marginal and it was foggy and dismal, but I paddled out by myself at about 10am or so 'cause I wanted to get some exercise for my upcoming Mainland Mexico trip. We'd been surfing this sandbar all summer; it's pretty well-defined and shallow; probably about five feet deep about 50 yards offshore.

I surfed for a while and was joined first by my tow partner Brian Simpson and then Todd paddled out. Todd was sitting about 15 feet north and five yards outside us. There was one other guy surfing the same wave as us, and another guy further south on a different sandbar.

About 10:45, Bryan started paddling for a wave. Right then, a bunch of dolphins swam by me and started circling Todd. This isn't odd; we surf with dolphins all the time and I didn't think anything of it.

I looked toward shore as Bryan finished off the wave, and then heard Todd yell and looked back towards him. He had been knocked off his board and the dolphins were still circling around him and thrashing. I thought, 'what did he do to piss off the dolphins?'

But then he really started yelling and then I noticed blood seeping out into a circle in the water and I knew there was a shark down there. I started paddling in as fast as I could towards shore. He was being thrashed around screaming like he was being cut by razorblades or something, and then it suddenly stopped. I'm not sure when we'll surf here again, but I know we will.

He yelled out, 'help me,' and so I started paddling back towards him, full of adrenaline and thinking sharks don't generally hit twice. The dolphins were still thrashing around. And then the shark came back, launching sideways at Todd. I saw it's belly and a three-foot side fin - it looked about 12 feet long. It latched onto him and started thrashing him around, pushing him six feet in one direction and then another, really fast.

Meanwhile, the dolphins were doing these big tail slaps on the surface of the water, and it was so bloody the water splashes were all red. The blood pool around him was the size of a car. All of a sudden, one dolphin leapt full out of the air and swung its tail around, missing Todd's head by two inches. That would have killed him if it hit. It looked like a cartoon.

I paddled for a lump to try to get in quicker, but it mushed out under me and I was left paddling still. I was yelling, 'get on your board and paddle,' 'cause I knew he needed a floatation device. After a while it stopped again. I was about 30 yards away at this point, not quite to the beach.

Before I got to shore, Todd's friend Joe Jansen, who'd been surfing a different sandbar, paddled right over to him. Super ballsy move, right into the bloodline. Joe brought him towards the beach and then Bryan and me helped bring him onto shore. He's a big guy, 6'3" and over 200 pounds, so it took all three of us.

He ended up on the beach, face down, which was good. His back was completely thrashed; it was about as grotesque as I could imagine. He was still conscious at this point, and he wanted to look to see how bad it was, but we all told him to not look back.

At the same time, blood was gushing out of his leg. Fortunately, Bryan is an X-Ray tech and didn't panic; he grabbed three leashes off the boards and tied a tourniquet really tight above where the gashes were on his leg, which slowed the blood down about 80%.

I walked up to the beach and then a fireman showed up, followed quickly by an ambulance, who took him away.

All day long yesterday I was totally dazed, and everyone was asking why I was so mellow. About 6pm, it totally hit me: I saw a surfer get mauled close up and I was almost hit by a great white shark. It was heavy.

I'm glad I can go away for a while to surf in Mexico to help forget about this; I'm not sure when we'll surf here again, but I know we will.

i dont really got much to say about this thread besides number 1, all you retard's that surf are idiots. Basically your gambling with death. When you get into a shark's territory you cannot tell it no you dumbFu**s. Ha, too funny, very easy guy's, pick up a new hobby, why dont you try butterfly swiming with the gaters, or wrestle elephants you know.. My word of advice, stay in the fuc**ng boat, or jet ski at least. Your asking for it as it is fuc**ng around in a predetors terriotory.. So if you all dont get eatin b4 you get back on to make another post, i give u a gg. For having huge nut's to do all that in the first place, mad props to swim with sharks, yet alone a great white if there any around there. Im 4 year pro boxer, 3 year amature and 2x golden gloves outa san antonio texas.. Im not afraid of no man, but when it comes to animals there are no law's, you cannot give jaw's a fuc**ng ticket for taking a chomp outa your side. So sad your story can't view. But speaking of shark, last month while watching a TV, in the news is one of the surfer who's taking a video of his friend who's playing on the big waves caught the spinning shark near to him. And the surfer said he will never surf again. Sorry don't I forgot what country but It's somewhere in America.
