    2008 Running Season.

For me it looks like I will be entering the Mt. Washington Road Race lottery if I can remember March 1st to March 15th.

"Entry to the Mt. Washington Road Race is limited. Those interested in participating must enter the annual lottery. The lottery entry period is March 1 through March 15, 2008. Please return to the site during this period if you desire to enter the lottery."

Guess I just sign up and hope fro the best?

What's your first race? My wife has a race next month in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Brrrrrrr.

The Mt. Washington Road Race is a great race. I ran it in 2004 and have wanted to run it since but too many other things going on. They aren’t lying when they say “Only one hill”. Once you start climbing the road never gets level again. I think the average pitch is 11% or 12%. It’s much steeper at the top.
I proposed to my wife after the race at the summit, so it’s a little extra special for me.

    Best of luck getting in!

As for this year, doc says no more running. I had a 1/3 of my left meniscus removed in the fall. That combined with an ACL reconstruction in ’93 and a minor MCL tear in ’03 will lead to a total knee replacement if I run too much. I may try to keep fit in other ways and enter a few 10ks or something. It’ll depend on how the knee feels.
There's a lot to be said for nowhere.

I am thinking about entering it myself. Don't know.. I did the palm springs tram road last month (same steepness but half the distance/gain) and it really wiped me out.

Come on Steve, you'll be fine it's only one hill.

Goodness, that is MARCH!?! I have no idea how you can get your training done in the wintertime. I am such a wuss.

I have nothing on the docket. Running starts for me ~March/April (although I do manage 2x week runs 4-10 miles).

PS - - what are all the cool people wearing for swim goggles these days?

yeah getting in the long runs has been rough- on those sunday mornings when you would rather snuggle in bed than go run for two hours

i am excited to run with the buffalos though on catalina! so that has been motivation.

swim googles: i like these, haven't had any complaints.
    http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1642.htm

they can be pretty personal though depending on what fits your face. try them out a lot of people on my masters team like those, and that is a decent online shop. i never understood the ironman fad of the GINORMOUS google/masks that cover your entire face.

goggle, eh? so are you doing a tri this year? do the harriman mini with me!!!
    http://www.genesisadventures.com/v3/...lash=triathlon
it's the same tri plakespear and i did together last year, good little race, well run, nice way to kick off the season.

Oh sweet! Swim goggles are MUCH cheaper than skiing ones! I can buy multiple pairs and pick the ones I like.

Yeah, wanting to get back to swimming (although I was never really good at it). There is a Y up the street.... will it lead to a tri... hmmmm... not sure!

came across the blog of anton krupicka, an ultrarunner. amazing.

    Week Log 1/7-1/13
from Ultrarunner Anton Krupicka by Anton
    Mon-AM: 15 miles (2:05) Garden
    PM: 8 miles (1:05)

    Tue-AM: 30 miles (4:05) Gold Camp
    PM: 4.5 miles (:41)

    Wed-AM: 30 miles (4:21) Buckhorn-Intemann-Red Rocks-Garden
    PM: 4.5 miles (:40)

    Thu-AM: 30 miles (4:10) CRUD Tempo
    PM: 5 miles (:41)

    Fri- 10 miles (1:31)

Sat- 42 miles (5:34) Rampart Range Road Overlook

    Sun- OFF (left shin)

    Total: 179 miles (24:53)

I was very pleased with this week until the weekend, obviously. Even without getting a speed session of any kind in on Tuesday, I was very excited with comfortably getting the mid-week volume that I did. The ice and snow definitely hindered the quality, but I'm not too concerned about that---I run to run in the mountains, and I got to do a ton of that this week so it was great.

We'll see how big of a deal the shin turns out to be. I'm fine with taking a few days off--it's not ideal, but preparations rarely are--and I'm just going to try to remind myself to not force anything. If the shin disallows Rocky, so be it; I'm not going to try to get too worked up about it.

Finally, I'm excited about having Kyle in town for the next couple of months---it's fun to get up in the mountains with some company.
He only ran 42 miles on the weekend (after running 130 M-F), which was dissapointing, obviously.

    obviously???

Most of the cool people don't wear goggles...it's the new new thing....the rest of us however think the coolest goggles are ones that fit well. I'm a big fan of the TYR Velocity for it's ability to keep the water on the outside.

As for running...pfffft. Haven't been able to run since NYC although the 4 board flat 9 minute miles I got through yesterday did give me hope. Not one race on my calendar yet.

Well, I am looking forward to this season ( my first actual season) with great anticipation.

I started training at the mid of january.

First race is either an 8k (seems short) or a 15k (which is looking probable) in portland March 16th (Shamrock run)

I am whittling down my time right now to sub 10 minute miles and trying to work my pace to a 9 minute pace. We will see if it comes together. (had a nice run last week with a 9 minute mile and some sub 9 running that felt really good)

Just finished a nicely paced 1 hr + run up some major hills (in oregon city) I am hoping to push my long run to 1:30 to 2hrs in another month or so.

Eventually this should play into a half marathon, which will hopefully lead to a respectfull full marathon at the ptown marathon. We will see though.

Today felt fucking awesome. I just hit my stride at the right spot and I felt like I demolished the hills.

I am training without Ipod or zune and I seem to like it more. The more I pay attention to my running and lose myself in my running the better I keep my pace up.

Anton applied to the running store that I work at in Bozeman, very very nice guy, but wasn't in the area long enough to help us out.

As far as goggles... if you are swimming open water then there is nothing better than an aquasphere xp http://www.aquasphereswim.com/produc...tnt_trans.html
Uber dorky looking, but they seal great, don't get kicked off and don't leave those lines around your eyes.

    I'm a fan anyway.

Not sure what my first race is going to be. But the gf (dockaroo) will be at the Burlington, VT. Marathon in May.

It occurred to me today that the last two DVDs I bought were not ski porn, but ultrarunning porn. That's kind of scary.

Anyway, my calendar is coming together nicely

    So far:
April 20: Lake Waramaug 50K Connecticut
May 18: Mountainman Duathlon run 9.76K, bike 36.6K, run 4.85K Ascutney, VT
July 19: Vermont 100 (I'm going to pace somebody over the last 50K or so)
August 30: Grand Teton 50 mile endurance run (probably)
September 28: Vermont 50 Mile endurance run Ascuteny Vt
Sept-Oct (date hasn't been set yet): Pfalz point challenge 10 miles, gunks
November 2: NYC Marathon (if I get in - if not, some other major gigantic fall marathon like Chicago or Marine Corps)

    but wait, there's more:
April 11: Keg schlep up to tuckerman ravine. Taking a 160-lb object 3 miles forward and 2200 feet up. If I succeed, then I will enter:
June 21: The Pittsfield Peaks Death race http://www.peakraces.com/deathdivision.html
Either way, I'll do a race in June. That way, I have something going on every month until ski season.

What exactly does that consist of? People passing out and shit? Are there jib flicks and big outdoors flicks?

Was one of them Running on the Sun? That's about all I know.

I said I would qualify for Boston this year. The skiing is killing that vow, we'll see how the summer/fall shapes up.

I ran the Muddy Moose a few years ago, outside Conway. Great fun!

And also, a year later I did the Vermont 50. That was my first ultra and it was the year of torrential rains! Hard hard hard!

It did get me hooked on ultras though!\

This year I am only going to do a couple of races. I'll do the Four Crown adventure race in Atlin, BC. Then I am going to run (do it every year) the Klondike Road Relay. And I may squeeze in another trail run somewhere. Not sure where yet, but I'll find something.

These two. They're basically documentaries, more in the NatGeo channel sense, rather than the TGR sense. Inspiring rather than exciting.

The Anton Krupica movie was disappointing, but interesting (I just expected more for $20.) The Massanutten movie OTOH was worth every penny.

My first race isn't until May 18th, the Lake Minnetonka Half Marathon. Then I have no idea what I'll be doing over the summer but will be running Twin Cities in Oct.

My name was pulled out of the hat for the Canyonlands Half Marathon in Moab; the race was yesterday. Unfortunately, after having a miserable cough for the last two months, I made a donation to the organizers and didn't run my first half marathon.

That sucks, and thats the problem with having to register so early for some races. You never know when you'll get injured and not be able to run.
