Well as most know the wife ran Boston last year and did quite well. The rest of last year she focused mainly on smaller races and lots of trail running. Says she plans to do the same thing in 2008. In June she is racing as part of a team from Logan UT to Park City. Something like 178 miles in two days for the team, run all thru the night. I get to drive the support van, should be fun.

Steve, try and find a copy of Desperate Dreams I and II. These were filmed back when Western States was young and give you a great flavor for what ultrarunning was like back in the old days (i.e., cotton tee shirts and socks, Coke, potato chips, and water at aid stations, D-cell battery flashlights at night, etc.). I think that you, as well as other ultrarunning (or aspiring) Mags would appreciate the vibe from these videos.

I am really looking forward to it. Though my running resume and experience is a little thin. I paced someone last year at Leadville and was really amped up by the runners and the scene.
I happened to be at the 60 mile aid station last year when Anton Krupicka ran through, he just sprinted through the station, didn't even get any food or water, it was ridiculous, I think he was 2-3 hours ahead of the runner in 2nd place.
Also, I am fortunate that I am able run with the guy who won Leadville in 1991, definitely a good source of training information.
I think the cutoff is in May, I believe the max is 500 runners. Has that changed since you ran it?
I'm going to Frolic in a Forest.
That, and break 60 in the 400m are my goals.
heh, yeah, something similar happened at the Vermont 100 last year when Andy-Jones Wilkins sprinted through the mile-15 aid station I was working. "Thanks, guys!" as he ran by without stopping to take anything. I think he finished an hour ahead of second place, give or take.
The cool thing about these top runners is that they all have blogs - Jurek, Meltzer, AJW, Krupika, even DK. Really great reading.
Cool, I'll look for them. Thanks.
I'll be sweeping at Chuckanut 50km on Saturday. Okay, yeah yeah, it's sweeping, but I will nonetheless be credited with finishing my 10th Chuckanut (5 sweeps) IF and when I finish. It'll be my first footrace since SOB 50k last July, which was closely followed by a mountaineering injury that resulted in my canceling of all footraces for the balance of 2007. My aging large body screams out for me to stop running these silly events. I should listen.
Any maggots running Chuckanut this weekend?
Artie, that's awesome that you're doing Leadville. I volunteered up there last year and am probably going to pace someone this year (assuming someone wants me) with sights on doing it next year. I may run the Leadville Marathon for shits, giggles, and some high-altitude hacking/adjustment
Edit for: Just moved to CO. Any mags have suggestions for cool races to check out this season? I'm into trail racing and anything with a cool vibe up to and including marathon (or 50Kish). Would like to do some longer, but after taking a few months off for just skiing I'm not going to push too far too fast.

I might be looking for some pacers when August comes around, I'll let you know. I paced someone in last year from the hatchery to the finish, it was a great way to check out the course, especially at night.
Though not in CO, here are some trail races in May in northern New Mexico, a 1/2 marathon, 50K and 50 miler: http://www.highaltitudeathletics.org/JemezMt.htm

check out www.runningseries.com for races in the steamboat area
my favorites from last season were the mt werner 12 mile, continental divide (they say 16 miles, but it's more like 14.5) and the 10k at 10k. not a ton of people, cool courses, and a good vibe imo.
this summer's gonna be wierd for me. dealt with the itb injury all winter and am finally running again. gonna try to take it easy this summer trying to build back up endurance and only run a few trail races unlike my plans pre-injury which had more races involved. i'm looking forward for the trails to open up (i know... blasphemy on a skiing website)
Wow I suck. I ran the 25K at the Pineland Farms trail Challenge yesterday and I think I came in around 66th wow thats shitty. I think I ran like a 8 something min. mile I have to wait for official results. My 50k pace is around 11 min miles these 25k people are fast. I got worked the last five miles I was past by around 20 or so people. Good race super cool place Pineland Farms lots of rolling fields up, down, up, down,up, down,up, down,up, down,up, down, it was relentless. I need to step up my training and get back to running to the top of my local ski area. Oh well I did drink free beer, pretty funny rolling up to the beer dood with nothing but shorts a bib and sneakers and having the dood ask for my ID.

Wow... you guys are rediculous. I can't IMAGINE running a 50k, let alone racing it.
This is kinda funny. From Trail Runner Mag.
The entry form for the Gunpowder Keg Fat Ass 50K, in Hereford, Maryland, includes this disclaimer: "No entry fee. Bring your own supplies. Any potential refreshments, meals, etc., are subject to the whims of potential sponsors … If you want to be fed at a race, you can go pay $35 and run a flat, fast 5K and get a cheap cotton T-shirt to wipe the crumbs of a day-old, cinnamon-raisin bagel that tastes suspiciously like onions."

bummed..
first day of the fourth week of bronchitis.
any sort of exertion whatsoever leads to uncontrollable fits of coughing, which has kept me from running for almost a month. my only recourse appears to let the disease run its course, but it's taking so damned long.
