Why so stingy with the PMs?

I just assumed 70 was the standard for the program. However, I just registered for a motorcycling forum and they allow 20,000 PMs.

A good amount of my TGR PMs contain maggot mobile numbers, directions to mountains/bars/houses, or correspondence that for some reason or another is meaningful and I don't want to delete. I always hover between 67 and 70 PMs and agonize a little over which ones to delete in order to make room for new ones.

With the number of "douche your box" posts I've seen, I imagine I'm not the only one that could appreciate this change. If the increased PM allowance would impose some expense on TGR, I understand. However, with memory being cheap and getting cheaper and PMs being composed entirely of text, how bad could it be to bump us up to 500?
I should want to cook him a simple meal, but I shouldn't want to cut into him, to tear the flesh, to wear the flesh, to be born unto new worlds where his flesh becomes my key.

Scroll down to the bottom of your PM page and see the little "download messages as" setting??? Why don't you download them to a text file, so you can have them even when you are not connected to the internet too. Seems pretty straight forward.

    Oh good point!!! Except that
1.) I am not always at my home computer, and as such don't always have access to my PMs
2.) They're organized here in a way that I like them.
3.) They're (probably) safe here, and I don't have to worry about backing them up.
4.) PMs take such a miniscule amount of space, basically meaning the cost for you to store everyone's is literally zero, or a penny at most.
5.) TGR is the only message board I know of that behaves like this.
6.) People ought to be able to choose between "download" or have them hosted.

I concur. The limit is a huge pain in the but. Compared to the space taken up by all of the archived threads the size of all combined PMS must be pretty minuscule....

This is why if you save them to a thumb drive or CD-RW you can have them ANYWHERE!!!

    Deal with it.

The simple act of downloading them to a file backs them up as long as you back up your drives all the time.

Since they are so cheap to store, use your own pennies.

Well since you have only sent 7 PM's and received 14 I'm not going to sweat it. Now maybe your other screen name could use a bump, but frankly now that you acted like this I don't give a shit.

no fucking shit. not a single one of those responses were rational arguments, rather they were either providing alternatives or downright evasive. who fucking cares if you know of another board that severely limits PMs? the point is most every body else gives it. you want a penny? i'll mail one to you - perhaps when I buy a TGR dvd. I'll even pay for the stamp. I don't own a thumb drive, and I'm certainly not buying a $10 item, nor am I spending the same to register a domain, because you're too god damned cheap to spend probably zero, at most a penny. same is true with the effort of managing backups, when the zero dollars extra on whatever hosting plan you have will surely get them backed up for me.

he's right, 100 is not too much to ask. nor is 10,000, especially since the people who would have more PMs than that are most likely the people who are supporting your company the most.

You are one sick mofo. Stop eating the hot dogs and use the money to buy a thumb drive. Do you get any PMs anyway?

heh. it took an alias to bring out a good point - without even realizing: whatshisface probably went into my account too, and would have pointed out my ridiculously low PM count, if it was low. seeing that it wasn't, he just mentioned hugh's.

you know, it's a pride thing at this point, therefore nobody's going to change anything. so forget it. it sucks but whatever.

I would do that download kubuki dance you describe (even though it would be a pain in the ass under normal circumstances, as steve mentions) but I am currently at Camp Fallujah in Iraq and cannot download things onto a government computer. Also, it requires administrative privileges to hook up peripherals (like a flash drive). Alas, war is hell.

    Now, hookabrothaup, you unpatriotic fucks!

Seriously, is space/cash really the issue? How much memory do all the PMs that TGR hosts take up?

I'd pay $5 to have a 20,000 PM limit on TGR.

70 is a PITA and we have asked for more before but the admins were too busy

this admin spent more time being a smartass in this thread than it would have taken him to change the limit

Actually, since this site is almost certainly on a dedicated server, the cost would actually be zero.

Literally the only disadvantage I can think of is that with a 10,000 PM limit, the server might run out of disk space, oh, about 1.5 minutes before it would run out with a 70 PM limit. 1.5 minutes. In other words, if he ever has to deal with a disk space problem, then he'll have to deal with the problem 90 seconds sooner. and he'll probably bitch about that like he bitched about the penny.

If these words you speak are true, then this policy of 70 PMs is doing nothing more than satisfying the perverse sado-sexual torture fantasies of the admins. I can kind of dig on that, actually. I've never been sado-sexually tortured before and I'm already in my early 30s.

Someone finally figured it out. I'll be cutting it back to 50 soon.

    ask for 100
    get cut back to 50

looks like ptavv's craigslist bargaining techniques have spilled over into "Ask TGR"

That 70 PM limit was set by Owens himself. I'm afraid to trifle with it. He's a killer.
