Fuck, have I spent too much time at TGR?

I sent an e-mail to a friend/colleague who works at a law firm, lamenting the time I had to waste tracking down a client (who he had referred to me) who had failed to let me know he'd moved to another state (a critical deadline was approaching on a matter that was, in the normal course of things, dormant for a few years), in which I used a few bad words - in particular, "Fuck. Fucking Fuck. Fuck." He replied (and I'm pretty sure he was serious) with some admonition about that word being impermissible and electronic discovery. Since that e-mail ain't never gonna be important in any conceivable litigation, I was surprised. I figure he's just a knuckeheaded litigator who's heard a few bad stories about people getting burned by incriminating or otherwise inappropriate e-mails and now reflexively (and stupidly) thinks that any e-mail with a bad word in it is a ticking time bomb.

Is it really inappropriate to send an e-mail including the word "fuck" to a business e-mail address? Have I been anesthetized by reading too much here?

If some of the best times of my life were skiing the UP in -40 wind chill with nothing but jeans, cotton long johns and a wine flask to keep warm while sleeping in the back of my dad's van... does that make me old school?

I don't really mean to answer your question one way or the other, just to bring up a point worth considering:

Email isn't as secure as you might think, it's just plain text going over the internet and can pretty easily be intercepted by who-knows. And even if it's internal, it would be pretty easy for some number of people at your work to take a look at what you've written, and it's going to be sitting on a server for a really long time, probably after you think it's gone.

I try to keep my work email pretty tame. It's a means of communication that is just not under my control.
that's all i can think of, but i'm sure there's something else...

(Edit: that or I wasn't stupid enough to consider opening any link/post referencing two chicks and a cup in the first place?)

Good points, but I already knew all of that. I didn't send the e-mail thinking it couldn't ever be seen by someone else. I just considered it to be pretty innocuous. So I'm trying to gauge if my sensibilities are fucked.

Send a quick follow-on email stating that you hope the recipient doesn't consider the language of the earlier email too crude. And that you consider said recipient a confidant, and may have pushed the bounds of decency a bit in your earlier impassioned reply?

When I worked in the corp world, I found I had to exercise a bit of language control and be able to turn it off and on consciously. But then, I also had a sales job and went out as the new guy to make a sale to this broad who was considered tough as nails and had never bought from my company. I ended up getting a big order. As I walked out of her office (I didn't wear underwear then, still hippified), I noticed my zipper was down and my dick was hangin out.

You never know how people are going to take things like that.

Email is best kept on the up-and-up all the time. You never know how long it's gonna be around or who will get a hold of it and try to use against you in the future. Sometimes in ways you never would have even concieved.

He hits forward = you lose.

Besides that if you really feel the need to cuss at a coworker, IMO there's nothing that drives the point home like doing it in person.

Btw, people in the Navy have the same problem. When I got out of the Navy I had to have a conscious effort not to have fuck be every other word out of my mouth. I was almost ashamed at how stupid I sounded. I never swore before I joined but once I did fuck was the exclusive noun, verb and adjective for 4 years. That's just how they talk in the enlisted ranks of the Navy.

My friend told me about the first time he went home for leave after joining. He came from a very very religious family and saying ANYTHING negative, even just something like "stupid", was unheard of. Well when he got home he sat down for dinner and non-chalantly asked his mom if she could "Pass the fucking butter".
