What a difference a cm makes...

I was curious what the consensus was on mounting a ski... Is there a consensus? Keep in mind this isn't a "Where should I mount my skis" thread, it is a discussion about what difference the mounting position makes.

Also, I searched for this before, and I may not have been using the correct terms to search. If this has been covered before, could someone please direct me to that discussion?

    Ski: Profit 100
Length: 186 cm (actual ski length 184.5)
Midsole (factory): 100 cm from tip
Current mounting: 99 cm from tip
Considered mounting: 101 cm from tip

    My dilemma:

I have Line Profit 100s. I had initially mounted them +4 (because my Seths were mounted as such and I loved them). This sucked. I re-mounted them at +1. Because the screws in my bindings were 4 cm apart I couldn't mount them on the midsole line or holes would line up. Here they are great! At +1 I feel like I have a lot of tail, and the ski is more jib oriented.

I'm at +1 now, and I'm considering moving to -1.

    My question:

Would the -2 cm make enough of a difference that I should do it? Or is this a waste and I should stop being a "whinny-gaper-pussy"?

    Thanks in advance!

There is no concensus on mounting skis. Not even when it comes to a particular ski.

In my book, 2cm makes a huge difference, it can significantly change the feel of a ski. So if you still fell you are too forward on the ski, go ahead an do it.

My thoughts on mounting anywhere besides right on the line are as follows:

Mounting behind the line is sometime ok depending on the ski. It can benefit deep snow skiing especially if you are really agressive about driving your tips. But I'd start at at least -2cm. Personally, I can't tell the difference unless it's a sizeable amount. Mounting ahead of the line is usually only beneficial to homos who go out and buy way too much ski so they can look cool in the lift lines so they mount way forward to reduce the percieved length of the ski. Besides, if you mount way forward there's that much more tail to tailgun. I wouldn't recommend this unless you're queer. Keep in mind that I'm talking about powder skis, not gay ass gate-raping/carving skis. Those skis are just gay no matter where you drill the bindings. People really need to stop skiing on those kinds of gay skis.

hmmm. Maybe it sucked because line has a more progressive mounting point than k2 to begin with.
I'd say give it some more time and see if you start to like it where you are at.

Powder snow skiing is not fun. It’s life, fully lived, life lived in a blaze of reality. What we experience in powder is the original human self, which lies deeply inside each of us, still undamaged in spite of what our present culture tries to do to us. Once experienced, this kind of living is recognized as the only way to live–fully aware of the earth and the sky and the gods and you, the mortal, playing among them. Dolores LaChapelle

If you are curious about the difference, and don't mind more holes, I say go for it.

I'm damn near addicted to trying every possible combination of ramp angle, mounting location, and even shiming of the bindings. My Motherships are mounted -1cm, and shimmed (canted) to account for my "knocked knees" and they seem about perfect.

Thinking about moving my mount on my 185 Praxis to -4cm from right on the line.

You could read the great mounting thread for insight into mounting locations. Update the thread when you find the sweet spot.

Manufacturers are all over the board with mount points, even within a line.

These 999's are 185's and the binding mount point is significantly behind a 176 Magfire. I ended up remounting the skis at +5.5 which puts them more in line with the 888's mount point. I think they will ski much more balanced now.

I understand this now, but I didn't measure before I mounted the first time. I just eyeballed it next to the Seth. I never expeced it to com from the factory at -2.75 from core centre. Now I'm just trying to get close to mfg recomended speck.

Thanks I'll read the mounting thread!

Question Salomon Gun - Mount Point ?

Just picked up a pair of Salomon 181 Guns with Marker Jesters. Hoping someone could advise as to the best mount point.

I ski NorCal, no park, just trees and pow. The ski has two reference lines:
1- The most forward is "Classic"
2- The rearward (about 2cm back) is "Progressive".

Any input would be much appreciated, thanks...

I mount everything on the line. IMO, the ski maker put the boot center in the center of the side cut. My experience is that all skis ski better FOR ME in that manner. If you're style of skiing prefers a forward or rearward mount, you should take that into consideration when you select a ski.

I like demo bindings for just this reason. Drill once and move your bindings in seconds at the top of lift.
