It would be nice if people would insult me about something else than my nationality. That's pure lazyness.

Face it : I got wine, cheese, the Alps and many weeks of holidays to enjoy it. While you're stuck with the summit county twins.

Pourquoi sont les Champs-Élysées bordés d’arbres?

Pour que les soldats allemands puissent marcher à l’ombre.

That's the only one I could think of right now.
You can cut me off from the civilized world. You can incarcerate me with two moronic cellmates. You can torture me with your thrice daily swill, but you cannot break the spirit of a Winchester. My voice shall be heard from this wilderness, and I shall be delivered from this fetid and festering sewer.

People seem to have a need to control and be controlled. The government continues to grow. People want to be sheep and those with independent spirits must continually fight for freedom from the mass of humanity commuting from the burbs to their cubicles until they commute to Florida. The maggot skiing community is a big middle finger to all that bullshit, celebrating freedom through skiing. And if you don't feel that way, you should ask yourself why you're here instead of at epicski, the domain of control. If you are new and want to learn more of the philosophy read the early issues of powdermag - somebody was kind enough to post them up not that long ago.

TGR as a forum morphed from a bunch of people that came and were made welcome to being moderated with roolz and bannings and talk amongst the suits of how to make money off the people here. And this is with a lot of support, mostly from new people that haven't really experienced the special history of this group of crazies. I am seeing a lot of posts from new people right here on the front page that don't undertand that the community is separate from TGR.

And if all that has happened in the just the last few years, I dread to see what the future with new management would bring. The new management will see this community as their property and a reflection of their corporate persona and I guaranfuckingtee you that they'll want to control it's course. It might be slow and insidious and with a lot of support from inside by people that don't know any better, as above, but it will happen.

And if you think there should be any kind of loyalty toward a corporate entity, a business, then I say you are the biggest tool ever born.

It seems important on a fundamental philosophical level to move occasionally, just to make the point. Be nomadic. This community has already moved from K2 to Powdermag to TGR. What's next?

The immediate question is how to best preserve the historical content. An archive independant of the forum altogether. I hope that minds greater than my own figure out a way to keep the past intact. That should be our biggest fear and concern. It was so heartwrenching to lose the powdermag history. Well actually, I'm kinda glad my early posts are gone.

Anyway, it'd be perfectly easy to use powdermag as a backup for the time being while the deeper issues are resolved. The decision to stay or go should not be a function of losing the history.

    Carry on.

With good wine and cheese the French at least have something to do during low snow years. We had a horrible season in California too, and while we have good wine, a fine Napa valley cab and velveta just doesn't do it.

Besides, any culture that makes love with their face can't be all bad.

I never quit TGR, I was laid off, ironically by myself. So did a lot of good people who still hope the best for what is left of TGR.

This forum is going to survive whatever happens to TGR, it has for close to a decade now. However why jump a good thing, why not wait and see. You have the words of a much better person than you that this thing isnt going away - and he controls the purse strings.

So get the fuck out, and don't let the door hit you in your big ol asshat head on your way, but me I like it here & I think I will hang around for a bit.
    I agree w/ frozen.

    Blurred, an interesting thought but...

In terms of making sure the forum doesn't die, I like the idea to "meet up at powdermag and make a plan there." And that problem is solved.

As for losing history and so forth, people shouldn't be posting their valuable TR's here and expecting them to stay forever. Post them somewhere more permanent, like your own blog page, and then cross-post them here.

For those classic threads from back in 2003 that are still entertaining, while it would be a big shame to lose them, creating a new board now would not solve that problem - we would lose the data up until now and anyway there will always be a future danger of losing data as situations change with the new owners. It's possible somebody could pre-populate the new forum with the old data, but TGR would never agree to that as long as the current board stays up, so...

Best to leave things how they are for now and if things change, take action then.

Exactly. Most people here don't remember Powmag, much less K2. K2 shut down, pmag shut down. There will be another. This is just a home for a community.

People: quit freaking out, it's not worth it.

What Frozen did is beyond comprehension to many, including me. I feel I know him well enough that he (and I am speculating here) laid himself off for the good of the company he put a lot of time and effort into, TGR. Now he is wondering what the hell to do and where to go and that is extremely hard to deal with, I don't care who you are.

I do see a light here as he is drinking shitty beer to save money for things like feeding his awesome family, putting a roof over their heads and being a man above most men.

    I'm staying.

I guess I'll weigh in here. Don't forget that many of the folks at TGR were maggots before they were at TGR and before the maggots were at the TGR site. I was a maggot before the maggots came to my own boards. Did it occur to you guys that these boards mean something to The Suit, to me, to Frozen, to Dirk and the others that goes beyond how it fits into the business?

I can tell you that no one is going to let anything happen to the boards here. There are a bunch of INVESTED maggots involved who won't let that happen. Including me. I don't post much these days because I'm incredibly friggin busy, but I still swing through here every day and I quietly perform a little administration in the background here and there. If TGR were worried about this from a corporate perspective, they could have cut my priviledges long ago, but they didn't, BECAUSE THEY ARE MAGGOTS.

You guys want boards run by maggots? You have a board run by maggots right now. Maybe you ought to show a little trust and respect for those who have made the effort to build and maintain this place and believe them when they tell you this place isn't going away. If that changes in some way, you will absolutely be told and history will be preserved. The MAGGOTS involved in maintaining things right now will make sure of that. The moderation changes that Shera references are true, but are also a function of a board that has 12,000 members and over a million posts instead of 2,000 members and a few thousand posts.

I can tell you that at the time of the the great maggot migration to the TGR boards, the cost even then was WAY over a hudred bucks a year. I mean WAY, WAY over. I know this because I often floated these costs out of my pocket as part of the group effort. Want to lose your history? Trust it to someone who wants to spend a hundred bucks a year on safeguarding it. Or for that matter even a thousand a month. It's expensive. And it's a commitment.

Bottom line - The Suit, TGR, I, Frozen, and others value the maggots and the community for what it is. I trust in that and believe that no one is going to let anything happen to this forum. I built it, have a tremendous emotional investment in it, and more than anyone wish to safeguard it. I believe that it IS safeguarded and I'm comfortable.

I'm here for the duration. I will also pledge to help make sure that history is preserved and honored. I hope my word on that is worth something.

    On another note -

Change in business happens and is healthy. Tightening, refocusing and re-evaluation are not only inevitable in business, but absolutely necessary. Change isn't an occasion to automatically start writing eulogies, but more of an opportunity to start envisioning a new future. The assumption that TGR is going to be snapped up by a soulless corporate monster who doesn't give a shit about our community values is hysterical and somewhat weak minded. Make those judgements at a time when you actually know what you are talking about. I personally look forward to seeing what the future holds for my friends at TGR.

Hey - I'm just one maggot with one opinion, but I would encourage you all to show some balls and hang in there. In my opinion, TGR has earned that loyalty and trust. -- I think it's time to get back to summer snow deprived squabbles, off season stoke, occasional flame wars, padded room porn, Southern Hemisphere soul freshening and the random beauty that makes up the maggot world.

I know one thing - you guys are gonna freak on the Tordrillo footage that the boys got for Lost and Found. It's a whole new world out there. An easy 15 years of nothing but first descents. Crazy.

Much love to ya maggots. Don't forget to live the dream -- That's one thing that TGR has always done right. In that spirit, I'm outa here in a 10 days or so to go play out at Kings and Corn.

    Owens out.
