Trip report of sorts down the glaciar rond with Semnoz yesterday - Mini-TR: Glaciar Rond Walk-Down (Chamonix) 2007.04.07

It was not the kind of thing that inspires a second lap, to say the least, but good to meet new people and we finished off with a run down the vallee blanche that WAS good. Just gotta pick the right routes at the right times, with Spring in full effect.

13:19 Obwald: un skieur survit à une chute de 20 mètres au Titlis

- TITLIS - Un skieur étranger de 31 ans a survécu à une chute de 20 mètres au Titlis, dans le canton d'Obwald. L'homme, qui s'adonnait au hors-piste, a été grièvement blessé, avec une fracture du bassin. Il a été héliporté à l'hôpital par la Rega.

Yo! Alive and well....but good lookin out (I just read the article this morning too....pretty dangerous out there...saw some wetsides on Thursday in Les Cont) Decided that 20c weather deserved a day by the lake, so headed to Zurich and had a few beers instead.....looks like I made the right choice.

These sunny skies just continue to be perfect for knocking off all the big ski tours. More propaganda: TR: "The Forth Col" (Chamonix) 2007.04.10

Where it's fresh and high, it's still awesome. Third day this week skiing in excellent conditions... velvety fresh spring snow that's nearly as good as pow.

Next I'd like to hit up the Grand Combin, Piz Bernina, Mont Maudit, Barre des Ecrins, Monch, and Jungfrau. Any takers? (Klar I'll be responding to your email soon)

plan is to do the Dome. done the summit in the past as part of a traverse - that's a REALLY fun route but alpinism not a ski route

we're approaching from the north so Ailefroid isn't really relevant for us so dunno about that. all huts are open except the Ecrins hut - I think it opens on 25th or sometime like that

I put in the first track down this today:

Top half good boot-deep light powder making wide turns (slope around 45 degrees sustained), getting heavier in the bottom half (goes on for 600m getting progressively less steep but still at around 40 degrees near the bottom) but still super stoked!

Nice, I am a little bit jealous, but not too jealous as I skied powder on Thursday and am about to leave for Jay Peak for another epic Nor'Easter.

I am in your part of the world in June.

Coverage on the glacier looks bony for that time of the year, lot of ice around.

we were lazy and went up from the p-tal skiarea, then down climbed and eventually skied from petersspitze (?) into the taschachtal. bony is an understatement.

After 4 weeks with a broken arm, finally got out proper, took it eeeaaaasy with some friends who are leaving Cham soon, VB. Incredible how much snow has become water or vapour since I was last round these parts.

For the curious, here is the temp profile from Bourg st maurice for the last 90 days, +2C anomaly, going off the charts over the last week or so. France had their warmest winter on record, could we be heading for the warmest spring...

yeah, it sure is nice out right now. got a little cool today but the last X days have been really beautiful. the coverage is still pretty decent up high, fun spring conditions at least. and i've got some use-it-or-lose-it vacation days that i have to take before april 30.

heading up to Saas-Fee this weekend.
Saturday's ticket usually golden as few around. prolly, my last lift served of the season.
Sat PM/Sunday AM a small pertubation w/ 3000m freezing level. Dawn may be cloudy/mtn fog, but should clear off by noon. may be getting the skins out, taking a hike, and skipping the ticket.
