First off, Garmin Forerunner 305 = Fantastic bit of kit. I love it.

BUT! Does anyone know where I can get an underlay terrain map from that is compatable with the Garmin software and GPS route recorder?

I've contacted Garmin but not heard anything back from them. It needs to be a UK map.

Edit - Sorry, I should probably have said NSR but the Forerunner does have a skiing function too.

I didn't think you can get any additional maps beyond the base map for the forerunner series, but I could be wrong.

I never thought about using the Forerunner for skiing applications, that is a killer idea. I think mrryde's right though, you can't upload topos to the Forerunner like you can an eTrex with Mapsource and the Topo CD (which they do make for Europe AFAIK.)

I think if you use MotionBased you can overlay topos to your track AFTER your done and even import the track to Google Earth. Thats the best your gonna get, which isnt much

Garmin has a TOPO Great Britain but I don't think your GPS supports downloadable maps. You can upload your track logs to a (Windows) PC and show them on the topo maps on the PC. That's my preference anyway.

I've been using the eTrex device since 2000 for skiing, biking and mountaineering. I take it just about everywhere (I was a tester helping with motionbsed). I intimately know the ins & outs of that device.

Mrryde is right -- the Forerunner cannot store maps, which sucks as it is a great form factor -- much better than the eTrex. It can record data (and show a breadcrumb trail), but that is of limited value.

Other services can do post-processing with data from any of the GPS devices.

I wasn't clear in the initial blurb. I don't want to clog up the wrist unit with topo maps, but I do want to be able to see my route on a topo map on my PC. Again, thanks for the help.

Use Motionbased.com for this, its free and you can also export to Google Earth
