    JONG Capilene Question

Yes, I've searched. Most of the threads debate the merits of capilene vs. wool.

Which weight of capilene is appropriate for lift-served skiing, with the possibility of some sidecountry hiking?

It would be worn under a MHW Monkey Man fleece and an XCR shell. I would think the 3 weight, but my fleece is absurdly warm when under a shell. WWMD?

I wear a Monkey Man under a White Smoke, and I've found that silk weight works really well when in anything above 20 degrees, even colder if I'm skiing hard. I know that Patagonia says their silk weight is for hot weather pursuits, but I've worn it as my base layer for about 5 years now, and I have to say that I've been impressed with its warmth and ability to ditch any sweat I earn. That being said, I also love my old and worn-out midweight, which I think would be about the same as the new 3's - if I add that to the mix, I've been good to ten below...

what he said, also, it's ill fitted. stick with mountain hardwear and get their baselayer. doesn't smell, fits closer (arms are tapered as well as torso).

I would get Marmot midweight. I've had them for a long time and they are great. They don't smell after a week of wearing them and they serve their purpose.

I normally wear two layers of the Marmot along with a shell but with the fleece you could get away with a single layer.

As everybody has mentioned... I would stay away from capilene since it is WELL known for reaking after very short use. Definately not the kind of baselayer you want unless you like to wash things alot. Definately not something you would want for a long tour or mountaineering expedition.

Capilene sucks. Stinks terrible after just a few hours.

It makes absolutely no sense for us to tell you what weight of base layer to wear, it is after all your body. There is no way in hell I could wear a fleece under a coat while hiking/skiing unless it was colder than -25*F.

That said, I almost always run a lightweight longie layer + a lightweight technical fabric tee-shirt and then add layers from there.

As for you stinky mofos: if you'd learn to layer properly so you don't overheat and sweat your longies wouldn't stink so much.

I will be driving tomorrow. Which car should I buy?

Your question is broad. Is it sunny, humid, what's the temp range you'll be in, are cold blooded, etc.

I usually wear a mid weight capilene under a Sessions Goretex jacket and I'm fine down to 15 or so. Much colder than that and I add a Patagonia R1 to that mix and I'm good.

I love the fit of capilene, just don't care for the material. Close fit = less versatile, and irritating after a couple weeks.

Mountain Hardwears synthetic sucks too, so does the Marmot stuff. The old MontBell stuff was great, but that was when they had their US base in CA not CO.

Interesting takes from some of you. I FAR prefer the fit, wicking capabilities, and durability of Capilene to any Mt. Hardwear, Marmot, etc. piece I've ever owned. The silkweight (or whatever it is called now) is the most versatile, I use it for everything from backpacking to mtbiking to snowboarding to XC trekking to paddling. Never noticed much odor issues with my old stuff, but the new version has Gladiotor odor control, which is a safe, nonpolluting alternative to silver (what the other manus use for odor control). I haven't used it, but then again it is widely known that my shit don't stink.

I'm a little late to the party here, but some uberlightweight merino wool will feel nice, help with keeping warm and won't stink.

My capilene stuff smells like crapilene after a very short time. I just got a Marmot silkweight and I like it, but it does fit looser size-for-size.

If you're not allergic to wool, it might be worth a shot...but don't use merino from just anyone - long undie makers treat it special to help minimize the itch. Smartwool is what I prefer, but I haven't tried Patagonia's wool equivalents to the capilene. OR makes a nice part-wool technical tshirt (long sleeve) that I've seen on SAC for under $15...retails for about $30 and might be worth a try, but to be honest I prefer zip-necks because I like the flexibility to vent more. I'm a sweaty mofo.

SkiED, if you hadn't had your nose busted in so many fights with dirty hippies, you'd be able to smell your stinky self.

I agree on the Capilene Funk, it's the worst of any synthetic I've ever used.

Icebreakers Merino Wool zip-t long sleeve is the best I've used, the SKIN200 model.

I also have one that I got as a gift from LL Bean, it's the same material used by Marmot, NOT Capilene, and it's done a pretty good job of staying funk free, and it's warm too.

Lightweight if you layer. Midweight if you're one of those zipT + shell types. Expedition Weight if you wear a dress, float in your loafers, and talk with a lisp.
