Ski building class @TMCC sign up

This is an update to this thread:

    http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/s...building+class

I got another E-mail (and it looks like some other TGR users did as well ) from the guy trying to start the ski building class. Here's what is says:

Hello All. You have all sent me emails regarding taking a class on how to make snowboards or snow skis. There will be a sign up meeting at the Edison Campus of TMCC at 7pm Wed. the 10th of January (Tomorrow) I am sorry for the short notice but I have to get the paperwork submitted ASAP so that we can have the classes and be able to still ski what you make before the season is gone.
We will discuss what times and days would be best for you, the students and hopefully fit in with TMCC schedules. Also to be discussed will be fee's and costs to complete the class. Due to time constraints and class size it is extreamly important that you attend. If you absolutely cannot make it please email me your strong desire to take the class and I will try to keep open a slot for you. If you have friends that want to also take the class please bring them along. This should only take an hour of your evening.
    Thank You for your interest

The Address to the Edison Campus is:
    TMCC IGT Applied technology Center
475 Edison Way Reno, Nv 89502
Edison is between Mill and Rock
Do Not Take North Edison off of Mill

Maybe I'll see some of you there if I make it in.
    Gabe

Doh. Don't live in the right area. But taking an independent study at Red Rocks CC to build some skis this semester... sweet.

I'm going to try to make it. I noticed that a certain local ski builder's email was also on that list...

I have set up field trips to a Custom Ski Factory here in Reno and we will have guest speakers. The Classes will be at (TMCC) Edison Center ...7:30 to 9:30 pm. To enroll into the class you can call (775) 829-9010 or ... log on to wdce.tmcc.edu When you get on the site just click on "snow sports" You can also just go to the college and sign up. The class Fee to the College is $79.
Classes start the 1st full week of Feb. It is very important that we have our materials ASAP...If you are making a snowboard or skis of normal construction ie, wood core, abs sidewall, fiberglass sandwich. I have a fixed cost of $150. If you are making some other exotic ski/board out of other materials you will need to contact me to figure out a cost. You can also get your own materials from your own sources but you must have them by the 3rd class.
Once you have signed up for the class you must get your materials fee's to me very quickly. I will be at Edison...tonight (01/17) between 7 and 8:30 pm to accept checks/money orders/Cash...

I went to the sign-up meeting, and am thinking about the class. It'd be fun, but it's 8 weeks, evening classes, and I'm out of town a lot -- so there's a good chance I'll miss several classes.

El Chupacabra, even if you miss half of the classes, I think that it would be very educational. You may not be able of build your own ride this semester, but it may get you thinking, and you could build something the next time it is offered. Anyways, did you get his E-mails today? Sounds like there will be some flexibility as far as attending different days, so that may help. Maybe, I'll see you there.

I signed up and met the instructor tonight. Seems like it will be a lot of fun. I believe the first class was filling up quickly and they were adding a second class.

Now I have to decide what kind of board I want to build. Any suggestions?

I have 4 boards already. A Ride Timeless 159, Timeless 164, Never Summer Premier 161 and Burton Canyon 167. I ride the whole mountain in search of powder stashes.

One of the guys was talking about building a swallow tail. That might be fun, but I'm not familiar with their limitations and turning ability. Gotta keep from hitting the trees.

Might do a 160 or 162 all mountain board.

I need to get that figured out and start working on base graphics (if any) and topsheet.

I hung out at the factory last year that built the Winterstick swallowtail, so I can give you a bit of insight on it.
I also have a friend who built them for Winterstick. Interesting board....
I guess I'll be speaking at the class and a tour of our shop is on the agenda.

    Splat,

any insight you can give ahead of time would be great; either on the board or by PM.

The idea of building something different than I have is somewhat intriguing. But I want to be able to use it as well. I'm not sure a swallow tail fits that bill; I don't know that it doesn't

It ain't an all mountain board. I don't board, but I've been told it's pretty powder-specific due to the leverage that could be created against the tail pins on hard snow. The swallowtail on the Winterstick was made of abs or a durasurf material, so the magic was in butting it as an almost full chunk tail into the wood core, lamming it, then cutting out the swallowtail after pressing. It was done on a cnc, requiring some precise centering to cut out the swallowtail because it had a non-transparent topsheet. I saw a lot of blems occur on that step. Racks full of them...
You could rout it out by hand with a clear topsheet - and do your own graphic below it.

I think a swallowtail is not the right board for me. I think I am better served by building a board that blends the Ride Timeless and the Never Summer Premier since those are two boards I really like.

    Heh. Brett-made.

You should start your own company, you could call it "BM Gear" and offer the "Brah" model.

I just found this post. Does anyone know if there will be any more classes or is there one that just started that I can jump into? I checked the TMCC site and I could not find any mention of it.

    Thanks,
