I think tomorrow at Kmart will be okay, despite the fact they cancelled the winter storm warning (I'm kinda confused about that b/c they're still saying 5-7 inches...I think that's a storm, anyway--I'll take it!).

They're gonna have to mow everything down for the MLC crowds...so it is going to be fast and firm.

Nothing like the Powder Dream post by iskibc but hell, it's something. I will close my eyes and pretend I'm in the powder dream pics instead. Hope I don't knock over a Joey over on Bear Claw while I'm dreaming...

So, the weather guy on CNN sez that upstate NY and mid VT is in a full fledged ice storm right now (6 am). "Don't even think of driving up there".

Sure glad I picked up those new Crystal Ships this year. They look pretty in the hallway.

Sure glad I decided to be the MOD for this holiday (manager on duty) instead of driving up to the Cornflake. I think one good ice storm driving experience a year is enough for me.

I ended up hittin up Kmart yesterday... actually not as bad as it could have been. Nice firm ice by the end of the day was great for making turns (fresh tune on 193 GS skis w/3deg bevel helps) on Cascade and East Fall. Skyeburst was pretty fun, but lower Bear Claw was the typical shit show. Outer Limits was depressing.

Snowed pretty much all day, although not really any accumulation. Not worth the seventy-odd bux, but not a bad day...

    Thanks, everyone, for the replies...

If it ever gets better I'll post some pictures, but conditions haven't justified taking a camera. Unless you'd like to see skiing on dirt.

These are some crappy randoms from Dec. 31st, right before the rain and weather destroyed all that was good. Looks nice, but there was only about 20" of snow, about 10" on a harder base... You had to go slow and watch for rocks and deadfall. There's a helmet in the sick snow spray picture. The other one is the top of a little chutish thing.

Sorry, I missed you in your bright red jacket. I blame the self-medication as a result of 2 hipchecks to ice and one to rock.

So is this storm a bust or what? I was just about to head for the door to head up and hit Kmart tomorrow, but if it's going to suck anyway I'll stay home and just go to Mt. Snow tomorrow.

I'm planning to skin up either Cannon or Loon tomorrow before work...if the line holds throughout the night and moisture continues to pass through, it could be worth the work in the morning for a little dawn patrol. I'm plannin to take a look in the morning and maybe even go farther north (Bretton Woods).

Anyone else in, give me a hollar...

Not to be a dick, but I think if BW was the only ski area within 350 miles that had 3' of fresh, I dont think Id go. I just remember it being akin to Wachusett--flat as a pancake. My pops and I were just talking about this on the way home from Kmart yesterday--as much as I love LOVE L O V E NH, the ski areas in NH arent worth their weight in turds.

YES. Forecast went from a foot, to a couple inches. Been spittin light r@!n here for a couple hours...supposed to get in the single digits tonight. The best we can hope for right now is a couple/4" tonight on top of what will probably be a lunar surface. But hey, at least now there is a surface.

    K-mart not so bad today

sure it wasn't soft snow gently falling(ice pellets and 40-50 MPH winds), but there was some goodness to be had, especially if you knew where to look. I'd say between the overnight snow and the ice/sleet there was 3-5 inches on the 'reserved" trails, everything else was skied off by 10 am
For sure, you have to be lost to find a place that can't be found, elseways everyone would know where it was

If you start off a sentence with " Not to be a dick" it is too late...
Boundry line at BR and some of the mount Rosebrook glades are actually pretty good. If you have not been in a while it is certainly worth a look. Way overpriced like the rest though. That place always captures more snow even when Cannon and Loon get nothing. Let me say that I prefer Stowe or Jay but these are not bad and to skin up = awesome exercise and great commitment. I will be at Loon this coming weekend rippin' it with my 6 yr old son. Will be skinning over to the new cut but unopened part for a little adventure.

    Amen Jay's...

Natedogg, (besides this whole BW rant being discussed at length a month or so ago) here in lies the rub:

I am getting up in a few hours, pouring a cup of coffee, grabbin a bagel and headed off for some morning excercise before going to work. Worst case scenario is I find 6" of snow and sleet, best case is looking like closer to 10". I'll put the skins on, go for a hike, take a deep breath at the top and drop in for some turns. It could be Cannon, Loon, or even (gasp) Bretton Woods! BUT, for those of us who live up here and work midweek...you make the most of it. This winter isn't really allowing us to be choosers, you just smile and enjoy the conditions you find. So while the EC finally gets a little lovin' (of various amounts) and some folks continue to bitch about it or the mountains we choose to find it at, some of us will be out sliding on snow.

Until the next mild storm rolls through and people split hairs about the radness of mountains like BW and Cannon, I hope those of us fortunate enough to live within a short ride of them go out and (gasp) SKI!

All of you getting up tomorrow to find out what this storm dropped...HAVE FUN!

Was anyone at Jay Peak today? Did they escape the freezing rain/sleet? Wondering if its worth skiing tomorrow or heading home.

middlebury snow bowl was GREAT on Sunday PM and Monday AM. A rather excellent football game between the 2 had a very low suck factor as well!!!!

Kids had a blast, wife and and I and a friend all had a great outing. I love an area that sells an AM half day ticket. anyone who complains about Winter driving should just freaking bite their tongue. Its the middle of Jan. and Winter has begun to make an appearance. Bring on the snotty driving and all of the accoutrements that accompany it!!!!!!

    What he said!^

No crowds, fresh snow/sleet and happy kids = happy parents!

Sugarbush blew on Saturday... $135 lifts/$39 lunch for two vs. $55 lifts/$10 lunch for two at Middlebury.

Wondering that myself. I'll be there tomorrow, I'm still in NH but heard that it was mostly snow in the Lyndonville area, hopefully all snow at Jay.

I'm sure the stashes will be decent anyway

I think the storm that hit the VT area, got a whack colder before it reached me tonight, here in northern Nova Scotia, and everything is white now. We're expecting about 15 cm total from this sucker, and its super light dry pow. (Granted this is on a base of about 5cm)

I finally got my first turns of the season. One run open that went from machine made crap to about 3" soft powder in about 2 hours. Skied with some Instructor friends, on a tiny hill, so corny ass crap skiing by TGR standards, but. . .

DAMN ITS NICE TO GET SOME TURNS IN FINALLY! ME HAPPY.

For anyone thinkin of heading to Kmart tomorrow, I have to say that today was a pleasant surprise. The snow conditions were pretty good, crowds very avoidable considering it was MLK day.

The good thing is it snowed lightly but steadily most of the day, so the cover got a good re-fresh. It was so nice in fact, that I skiied until 3pm and only stopped b/c my quads were starting to show signs of giving out. Most of the "natural trails" are still closed but they are blowing a lot of snow all over the place, including lower superstar...but no tellin' when that will be ready.

All in all, a good ski day all things considered! Not as good as Friday, but almost.

There was a bit of drizzle at the end of the day, and not sure exactly what temps will be like, etc. But I would say it will be very nice tomorrow morning and if I could I would make a day of it again. Sure beats the cube, which I have to go back to in the a.m. (ugh!)
