13 year old male....very tough
Probably why they closed SunUp and SunDown today, fears of slides...at least while we were up top. Lots of nice stashes to be found frontside. Some REALLY nice.
Mmmhh, wind deposition. We found lots of loaded trees and no people. . .

Although I think my camera was set to MAXIMUM NOISE by accident.
weird because I would report the opposite.
Salto Glades/West Ridge was DEEP today if you chose your lines well.
Got first tracks in jolly hug glades this morning... easily 6 or 7 inches
But yes the wind did suck ass. ripped the powder away from any of the trail. but trees were niiiicee
Snowmass reported a foot, there were areas of 6-8" where the wind hammered up top, but the middle third of the mountain was DEEP! 18" -24" in a lot of places. Top few inches was blower, nice wet bouncy snow lower down. Saw a lot of whoomping, tons of cracking, and a lot of stuff in bounds slid on it's own today. Seemed like they weren't wasting their money on bombs. Occasionally you'd here one, but Hanging Valley didn't open until 2, heard the bowl didn't open at all. Tomorrow will be KILLER!
Abasin was super soft today. first two runs were indeed my best of the year so far + there were no lift lines. Sidecountry was Spooky. We saw some natural activity, felt whoomping, cracking, and settling. Skiied a very conservative line, but a member of our party remotely triggered a small slide with 2 foot crown...So much energy in the snowpack right now. It's a good thing Pali stayed closed today. The face probably would have ripped down to bed...keep it safe folks.
Did he destroy another pair of skis? Gotta be careful around him for awhile afterwards, this was his reaction after I said, "uhh, sorry about your Coombas. . ."

Breck skied awesome this morning. Still incredibly thin...I hit a lot of rocks, but it was still deep. Tons of activity in the snow pack, shooting cracks. etc. The snow kind of started to remind me of last year. Lots of fun indeed.
Thats terrible news about the 13 y/o killed on a Prima Cornice slide.
Holy shit on the prima cornice slide. Me and a buddy had just lapped it and went back for another to find it closed at 230. We both looked at each other confused on if they had swept early or what before heading into riva glade. Fucking eerie. Just a terrible situation it was great out there. MASSIVE CRACKING AND WHOOMPING in Petes, stay clear of the open sections. PERIOD.
would be nice if we could maintain a 3 or 4" refresh every 3 or 4 days and not have it get too warm....I'm not sure that is going to happen but we can hope.
Not sure if this is the right forum for this video, but here is a clip of the slide I mentioned below.

This slide occured at approximately 12:15 in the A-Basin SideCountry on North/NE facing terrain on Sunday 12/22/12. The slope angle where the initial cracking occurred was 25 degrees, but the energy from this (breakup) remotely triggered a slide on a roll about 100 feet away where the slope angle reaches about 40 degrees. No skiers were caught. The crown was about 1.5 feet deep and the slide reached the bed surface. It ran for about 200 feet into a gully.
Some snow Monday night, some more on Thursday night. The second storm could be decent, but too early to tell, and regardless it's going to move through pretty quickly.
Well, I guess I'll keep a close eye on the snow reports and hope for a surprise day here and there, keeping my sick days at the ready. I pity people who missed out on yesterday.
Couple of fluffy inches in West Vail this AM, not deep, but nice quality snow.
