No experience with strap on cages, but if you were feeling ambitious you could put a couple rivnuts in to make a proper bottle mount. I wouldn't worry about drilling a couple holes in the downtube on a frame like the Riot; that thing's burly. You'd probably need to rustle up an angle drill to make the holes though.Quote:

That seems utterly insane to me. I'm wondering if they saw high end brakes (maybe XT?) on her bike and priced out new XT brakes? Surely there are more affordable options to keep a 12 year old bike on the trail, right?
EDIT: I'm not specifically asking for what brakes she should get, just trying to figure out if the shop is completely off base (ie go to another shop) or if getting replacement brakes for a 12 yo bike, albeit one that was high end back then, really should cost anywhere near $600.

It doesn't seem that far off, assuming they were going to replace the rotors as well. A new set of XT brakes (levers+calipers) are around $400, another $100 for rotors, $100 for service (mostly shortening cables and rebleeding unless her bike has internal routing for the rear). SLX will be around $100 less. You could drop down to something like Alivio to save money but that'll be a big drop in performance from 2010 era XT (which I think would have been M775).Quote:

New Deore M6100 brakes can be found for under $100 per end online, probably $120 from the shop though. Rotors may not have to be replaced if they aren’t too worn/warped, and as long as the brake track is wide enough for the new pads.Quote:

AFAIK Alfine brakes just have a longer lever, but same master cylinder and caliper as SLX. So here's a cheap option:

Most likely why they quoted a replacement, you're more than halfway towards new brakes of equal level (old XT for new XT).

another thing to consider is that a new set of brakes is going to be a generational leap in performance over a 12 yr old set of brakes, a new bike will shift a generation better, big wheels will roll over stuff easier, everything about a new bike will be a generation better SO I agree a new bike is probably what is needed

Not sure I agree w the generationally better. Yes 4 piston XT are light years stronger than 2 piston XTs, but old serviced XT vs new (2 piston) XT isn’t really an improvement.
Am running XTRs m985 race circa 2011? And they feel amazing, clearly not as powerful as even my new 4pot Deores, but modulation and all is great for it’s intended purpose on my XC singlespeed.
