Crazy. According to that thing there are only 786,570 people richer than me (well, my wife and I combined) in the world. Not sure I buy that. It also says there are only 107,565 people globally who make more than $1M.
It's based on data from 1988 & 1993 and using a population from 2006 (6.0 billion, it'd be about 5.2 billion in 1990); and then they're only using a few data points (just estimations by the World Bank) and extrapolating a curve from them. Just to account for inflation you'd probably have to deflate your income by 50%. And if you have dependents you'd have to split your household income with them too.
On top of that, plug in $1,000,000 and then run $250,000. You will get the same ranking. There's a definite lack of precision in their calculations.
But I can see how a lot of people would see this and hear the message they're trying to give, which is probably all they care about.
