I've said this many times since February and I'll say it again...I haven't felt this good in a really long time. The weight that I have dropped from eating right, biking, spinning, and going to the gym has made a big difference in every aspect of my life. I'm still working on losing more....

I can't wait to get on my skis and see a REAL difference from the last couple years.

When I was 6' 185lbs I used to stay nice and warm, now that I weigh about 165lbs I find that I get much colder. I miss the insulation, but it makes biking to work a lot more enjoyable, and the skin up too!

Yetiman at 6'3" 190 lbs = pretty good.

Yetiman at 6'3" 240 lbs = not so good.

I can tell you how weighing MORE definitely didn't help my skiing. In grad school (blame it on 20hour days) I was about 20lbs heavier than now and I tore my ACL likely from my musles not being strong enough to support the extra heft while turning to try to avoid a collision w/ a snowboarder. Damn knuckledraggers....
Feeling a LOT more nibble on the slopes these days 'cause my muscle strength to body weight ration is much more appropriate.
Nice work on the weight loss. Keep up the good work!! You'll really see a difference this year!

I need to lose twenty pounds. law school really crimps into my eating habits and exercise routines, unfortunately.
I hear ya - it seems hard to eat right when you have a crazy schedule. I'm a bit of a nutrition freak myself, and I've helped quite a few friends drop excess body fat, all while on tough work/life schedules.

The key is to develop a nutrition plan that works for your given situation. For example, one guy I've helped was a traveling salesman and didn't often have access to a refrigerator. I helped him create a nutrition plan of healthy foods that didn't have to be kept cool, that he can eat on the go. With a little education and planning you can overcome almost any hectic schedule.

Don't let a hectic schedule be your excuse...it's too easy to cop out.

This may not apply, but I went from 165 to 122lbs 2 seasons ago due to multiple stints in the hospital. Result = worst ski season of my life. luckily it was also the worst year for snow in my life!

I say keep the weight on, back up to 165 and climbing

Oh...as for myself - In the past 2.5 years I've gone from 220lbs @30 percent bodyfat to 185 lbs at 10 percent bodyfat - my skiing, hiking and climing have all improved significantly.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the pay off from this summer's core/lower body training. For the past 6 months I've been really hitting the squats, deadlifts, lunges, good mornings, etc., and I'm really stoked to see how my skiing benefits from the work.

my weight varies from 170 to 185 @ 5'10". I find that I'm a lot more nimble at 170 and my knees hurt less, but that my ability to handle bigger skis and variable snow/crud also declines.

That said, my goal is get down to 165 or so for the upcoming ski season.

My main point is, don't lose weight to the point that you start losing muscle. And DON'T attempt Mtn lion's weight loss program!
Weight v. height comparisons are not very helpful. Body type/metabolism factor in quite a bit. I'm 5'9" and range from 135-145.

Well, it could be risky, but as long as you start with a light weight and concentrate on your form you should be fine. Performed properly, good mornings can really help build up your lowerback/hamstrings/core, and actually prevent back injuries.

Almost 3 years ago, I weighed in at 253 ish. I worked my ass off for about 7 months, got myself down to below what i felt was healthy and was in the low 180s. I had trouble leveling off at a healthy weight, Ideally I should be around 194. I'm 6'2".

Leveling off was very difficult, I had been on such a strict diet, I continued to fluctuate, I would go from 184-197 and back and fourth for a long time. Right now, I'm pretty steady at my current weight of 208-11, but I don't feel healty. I need to get Unlazy and rejoin the gym to get rid of the 15lbs I want gone before ski season.

Losing weight most definately helps make you a better skier. If you are already a solid skier, it just makes getting around soooo much easier.

thanks! but I've got a long way to go yet.. I'm still 320 lbs, you know..

went to a rock gym yesterday (my first time!) and boy - that was rough. I tried a 5.8 with a ceiling and it just about killed me. Can't wait to go back!

You think low 180s is unhealthy for someone who's 6'2"? 180 lbs puts you at a BMI of 23.1, which is actually toward the high end of the recommended range of 18.5-25. Yeah, I know BMI isn't perfect, but I have a hard time believing 180 lbs is unhealthy.
