That article that you posted Telemike, really hits home. As an ex-FS fire employee, the thought of private contractors running fires is down right scary. I've seen them on fires and yeah it might be a blanket statement, but in general you just don't get the quality work that you get from a FS fire guy. These contractors typically run in total gypsy wagons, broke down POS's. The people on their engines lack experience in a major way. They don't have the drive that the FS people have to do a good job.

That would be a very bad move IMHO. Now in certain roles, I think they may have their place. Such as on this last fire I was on (Derby Fire) they had a private comm. unit. He did a great job and was able to cut through the bs and get shit dun.

never too early to start thinking about a summer job for next year, what options does a 19yr old in excellent shape based out of park city utah from mid may to late august have?

Private contracting has been one of the reasons the cost of fighting fires has gone up - it counts up to a significant profit for the contractor, and the crews are usually one step above worthless. Probably the worst part of it is that it diminishes the incentive for maintaining local capability for the state and local fire agencies as well as the federal agencies. Yet another bad, bad idea from the Bush administration.

That would be a negative on the Sportivas.

Sorry to dissapoint, but somehow through a strange twist of fate I managed to avoid smashing anything.

Where to? I just got back from the Day Fire. It wasn't too bad, for socal. I'm officially done with fire for the season. I'll probably finish out the pay period and call it good with 1050 hrs.
