I’ve been able to upload images via Tapatalk. At least I think that’s what it does.

Yeah, correct. Something is still messed up with image upload on the forum itself, at least last time I checked. I've been using Post Images, it's free and gives you the BBCode to copy and paste into the reply window.

I haven't tried it, but it makes sense. With the Tapatalk app, I *think* the image is actually uploaded to the Tapatalk servers and then inserted into your post in a similar way to any other image hosted elsewhere.
