We have bedside lamps that are touch to turn on/off. Recently, the dog turned one on at 3 am by touching the base with her nose. It was amusing at the time, but now that she knows how the light works it's moved to the annoying column.

My wife has the lamp button thingy for touch on/off. Our old cat figured this touch control out and then every morning he would jump onto the night table, stomp on the button and then start howling for food or just to play.

We had a new shelter dog that decided a quiet corner in the living room was a good place to pee, so we put a motion sensing alarm there and took her outside every time she went back there. In about three days she realized that if she was bored she could go back there and we would drop whatever we were doing and come check on her. So she started using it as a bell she could ring whenever she wanted attention. Oh well, she stopped peeing in the house, at least most of the time.

We have friends who literally put a bell on their back/kitchen door and taught their puppy to ring it. They were even a little smug about how clever it was, until they realized what had been obvious to everyone else. When they got rid of it my wife quipped, "I see you've tired of being the dog's butler."

My dog has button for "Outside", "Food", "Cupcake" "Walk" "Play". He actually uses them pretty well and usually not annoyingly. If the wife and I are fighting he will run around and hit random ones to distract us. That's kinda funny, but annoying at the time.

So, last night I was thinking about the technical part of creating a super smart automatic sliding door.
My idea was that it could be super programmable, so you could set times when it was locker or open. But above that, it could allow the dog or cat to go out, come back in, and the. Lock itself until whenever time you wish. Or whatever configuration you desire.
This could also be activated by a smart collar so other animals don’t get in ( or out)

In the summer, we just leave the door open, but when it’s seven degrees, that doesn’t work.
Our huge golden will never go through a doggie door, he’s terrified, but this tech certainly could work with a doggie door.
I bet someone has developed this, I’ll research right now.

I've definitely seen dog and cat doors that unlock when a sensor on their collar gets close enough to it.

Downside of course is when they want to invite their friends over.

Fuck yes. And I get redirected about 30% of the time when I click a thread. Usually to some random Adobe page or something.

Edit to add: Then when I went to post this, it said I have to wait 45 seconds between posts, but I hadn't made a prior post. But I knew not to post again, because that shit happens all the time and even thought it says I can't post that post, it posts it anyway, so if it post it again it double posts.

We had a sensor operated dog door, except we kept forgetting to take of the dog's collar before we took her swimming. Why the collar had an active transmitter instead of an RFID or something else passive like a RECCO reflector escapes.me.

There isn't a dump or recycling center anywhere in my county so disposing of anything bigger than what fits in a garbage can is stupid expensive. We can get one large item pickup each year but it's severely limited on what can be disposed of and there's a size and weight limit so you can't get rid of furniture or even an old rug. Because there are no transfer stations dumpster costs are totally outrageous because they have to transport hundreds of miles to the nearest the county has a contract with. There is one private dump that I can use in another town but as a citizen not a business they have a $100 drop fee plus you pay by weight and you can't dump some stuff.

I did a bunch of Google searches for automated dog doors, as I would like to let them out but not the cats and everything I found has poor reviews. There's one that fits a large dog but the reviews on it suck for $500 dollars. I have two dog doors installed, so I'm going to put little tabs on the outside of the flap so you cannot push it to go out but you will be able to come in. So still have to let them out, but they can come in when they want to and then I'll block the flap again.
