It lessens the chances of a 1 punch knockout 10 seconds into the fight. But, the rounds are also 2 mins instead of 3 minutes so they can push the action a little more each round (advantage tyson?)
This is 28 years ago. Not Tyson in his invincible 80's prime, but still relatively young and very dangerous. Holyfield avoided getting knocked the fuck out in the first few seconds of the first round, then went to work boxing and stymieing Tyson until he finally got him in the 10th round, and closed it out early in the 11th. I'm sure Paul is hoping things proceed along the same lines. I agree the gloves and age are gonna work against Tyson, especially if to goes past a round or two.

Fight starts about 20 minutes in

I’m worried Tyson is a space cadet these days. Too many hits to the head and he’s a pothead. I’m over a decade younger than him and I walk in a room and forget why from time to time. Physically not worried about Mike, but mentally he’s not as sharp as he used to be.

I watched one of the NetFlix build up episodes last night.

After losing to Fury, Paul's "coaching" staff left him and he brought in a new team. Their comments about how no one had ever taught him to box were revealing. They had to start teaching him basic fundamentals .

I just want someone to get knocked down (not necessarily KO'd). If it's 8 two minute rounds of sparring and then some decision BS, that's the worst possible outcome.

Paul's foot work is a joke. Tyson lost to McBride 20ish years ago. This whole thing is a money grab.

That said, I think Mike could still land a take a nap blow, but it will have to be early. Otherwise, the young guy just wears him out.

Yep, that was what his new coaches were saying. Plus, even in the recent footage were still having to tell him not to stick his chin up when he threw a punch.

Skill and experience, or lack thereof, has got to play a huge part in the outcome, even in a sport as physically demanding as boxing. If Jake doesn't straight KO Tyson does anyone actually think he's going to win based on scoring. Even putting my heavy Tyson bias aside, I'm saying no way Jose.

A knockout is far less likely with 14oz gloves... it's a bigger deal than most people realize.

I just looked at the weight of my old training gloves and they are 14 oz. I can tell you they will still knock a m'fer out.

Doesn’t the general curve for male strength vs. age really start to drop after ~60? And the peak is about Paul’s age, but decline from there to 60 is much slower than post 60. And Tyson was always a heavyweight. Which is to say not the number of age, but whatever the fuck Mike did in the intervening years, and Mike was supposed to have been a technically good boxer.

Advantage to Paul on the reach and youth factor. Probably on the speed/reaction time too. Tyson will need to get inside and stay inside. I don't see this fight going more than 3 rounds. I guess maybe 5 since they are 2 minute rounds. Tyson at his age might not have a glass jaw, but it won't take as much to bring him down as it would have 10 years ago, even with 14 oz gloves.

Reaction time and cognition speed also peaks in the early twenties. Mike will need skill and efficiency to overcome his opponents physical youth

Hopefully Tyson remembers why he's in the ring and not asking questions like, "why is this guy trying to hit me? What the hell did I ever do to this guy? And what are these things on my hands?"

yeah, but there’s a huge variance between the mean and whatever a freak like Tyson was, and I’ve no idea what degradation he arrested or released based on what he did didn’t do since he was a champion.

I don't know why I'm watching the early "fights," but this is absolutely trash boxing if you can call it that. What a fucking joke. I should know better. Fucking social media trash. Ugh.

If these are actual championship fights these folks gotta be bummed. Work your whole life for a chance at a belt and you’re the undercard for a youtube douchebag playing the heel and a 58yo dude.

I’m pretty much convinced the Paul v Tyson match is staged. This shit is pure WWE, I’m fully expecting Vince McMahon to storm the ring at some point.

Jerry looked like a cross between Methuselah and Gollum, Irvin looked like he’ll be soliciting hookers and blow before the fights are over. I kept waiting for them to trot out Hollywood Henderson. Rosie Perez? Really?
