I've been liking a mix the nog and apple cider I get from the grocery store. Working on the ratios. 3 nog to 1 cider is good.

Down the street distillery has a fantastic rum I’d think would be great in some nog. Have it so if the nog shows up I’ll report back.

Sooooooooooo good! Doubly good that I don't have to make it and it's a local small dairy. Enjoying a eggnog latte on a cold rainy morning. Doesn't get much better.

Every year about this time I'm reminded that I should try making my own nog.

And every year about this time I'm reminded that it's too late to start making my own nog for the holidays.

That leaves me with finding good nog to put bourbon in and there's the rub. Despite being in a major city, the seasonal dairy offerings are miles behind what you'd find on any store shelf in the Midwest (and likely CA/WA/OR dairy regions as well). Growing up we had an amazing dairy that sold pasture fed products in glass bottles - their nog was impeccable and people (Whole Foods) noticed which was nice because it allowed them to expand operations. Unfortunately that expanded distribution footprint is still 500 miles away from me.

So until I find something decent locally, anyone got any good recs for nog that could be reasonably found at a major grocery?

Thanks KQ, I'll keep an eye out.

Tried some fancy looking nog at the local Whole Foods last year and it was the most uninspired slop. Zero seasoning and just tasted like you were drinking egg batter.

Didn't even waste booze on it - straight to the trash.

This is the recipe I use and it’s good after only two or three weeks. Sure it gets better as it gets older, but if you want to make a batch late in the season it gets the job done.

Yep - and even young homemade nog is going to blow away pretty much anything you can buy commercially. And the booze will already be in it!

It’s late in the year for aged eggnog, but there are plenty of recipes for cooked eggnog that are drinkable as soon as they cool. Any of those will be better than grocery store eggnog, which usually just has egg solids mixed in. (That’s not to say I don’t buy it occasionally.)

I was going to respond with the same comment. Alton Brown’s eggnog is decent the day you make it. It is good after 2 weeks. I usually make it around Thanksgiving for Christmas. Whatever is leftover I age till the next year. The year old+ is good, but I sometimes question if it’s really worth it to age it. I’ve had refrigerator issues where I’ve lost a batch mid summer.

Thanks all for the Alton Brown recipe, I'm gonna give it a go.

I've seen him around town here every so often so if it sucks I'll let him know personally.

Plus whatever for Alton Brown’s recipe. Easy to make. Good no matter how long it’s been in the fridge. I’ve been using that one for years now.

Also a plug for subbing the booze in his recipe for laphroaig to make laphroaignog. Delicious in small batches.
    focus.
