    Electric Bike Thread

My buddy has a 2019 Riese & Muller roadster with a belt drive that fell off his rear bike rack and was seriously damaged.
He needs a replacement e-bike for the Triple Bypass. The Roadster was belt drive which was fine for bike path commuting, but not really suited for a 120 mile ride over multiple mountain passes.
    Any recommendations?
    Criteria:
    Must have extended battery life
    No drop handle bars
Must have upright riding position. (He is dealing with back issues)
    $5k price range.

Before I bought an E-bike I asked the club VP, the area trailbuilders and various cool kids if E-bikes are permitted ?

The VP, the builders, were all riding E-bikes and told me there are no problems with E-bikes, I/ we never see radpower bikes with people who don't know what they are doing, its all mtn bikers who bought real mtn bikes with pedal assist

last year they updated the Map on the Recreation BC kiosk to say class 1 permitted no 2 or 3 so the gov paid for that sign and built those M/C built trails with big grants,

as i understand it e-bikes are not a problem in almost all of BC, maybe whistler where you would have a crowd problem anyway is different but I duno

SO anyone buying an E-bike probably wants to make sure they have social license to actualy ride it where they want to ride it, like i wouldn't take mine across the boarder, I know an American who just leaves his up here at his house and some expats who bought E-bikes and just moved back up here to the commonwealth

It has a walk mode - the way you access it is thumb down to motor off, then push and hold the ring controller sideways. In Rocket (boost/turbo) mode, the torque/power is on par with a full power ebike in their trail setting. In River (mid power), it's a bit more than a full power's eco mode. In Breeze, it's basically just sipping on the battery enough to counter the added weight and take the suck off climbs. You can also press and hold up the ring controller while climbing for an extra 12s of boost, adds about 10-15% more power briefly. It's nice for short steep bits - I use it when doing trail work with a heavy pack on. My buddy (~180 lbs, moderate fitness) says he's done about 7k vert on it in Breeze on fire roads. I regularly do 4.5-4.6k in Rocket in 2:15 (~165 lbs, above average but not XC fitness).

The Heckler SL is 160/150 (basically a Bronson with motor), and I ride it on the same trails I take my Nomad on. The Pivot Shuttle SL is 150/132. My HSL is built up burly (Vivid air, DH tires, Reserve HD wheels, etc. and about 44 lbs with pedals). The owner of the shop I got it from has his HSL built up as light as possible (Float DPS shock, 1 piece bar & stem, XTR 11sp, Reserve 27mm rims on DT 240 hubs, XC pedals, light tires, etc.) and said his is right at 39 lbs.

Latest info I've heard is that the range extender will finally be released this fall.
I am sure I would have an absolute blast on one of these, but for this specialized use, I really don't need that much travel.

39lbs is really getting pretty doable though. Thank you for the specifics. That is impressive. It's got to be light enough to carry over downed logs etc and that is really getting there.

    I'll do some more research.

    Ok school me.

I live in a town that really wants to help buy me an ebike via rebate. I'm having a hard time justifying it even with the rebate. I have a Norco Sight that I ride when I want to pedal and avoid noise, and a dirtbike for when I want a different type of ride.

The bus system is great IMO, especially during the summer. I usually ride my bike down the big hill into town and take the bus back up. It might be fun to ebike to the resort in the winter, but it's a very walkable distance as is. The very narrow use case I'm honing in on to justify getting the ebike I don't need is for spring ski approaches. Even those outings would be limited around here, but there are some zones I like visiting elsewhere where it could be useful.

What would be your ideal bike type for that usage, and what are the non negotiables for any ebike? Does it need to be mid drive? Motor from a real company (Bosch, Shimano, others)? Wattage? Class? I'm totally off the back on the ebike thing.

Not trying to spend big $$ on a fancy emtb. Full suspension bikes aren't eligible for the rebate anyway.

Not sure about your app as you describe , it sounds like you just want the rebate but you don't really want an E-bike

IMO one would want at least a midrive from a real bike shop brand with batteries that won't catch fire as opposed to something you bought off amazon with batteries that do catch fire and when they break its impossible to buy parts or get them serviced

So I don't know much about the bikes made out of chinesium, i can only suggest your don't buy one, a good rule of thumb is don't buy a bike with a throttle

Edit: an LBS told me they do not sell them cuz they are actualy Illegal in Canada

So in other words a pedal assist class 1 which will likely have a lot less problems for the user than 2 and 3 , so this is your start, good luck with it

    Interesting compare

The new dream. The gx level and i wouldnt change much. Shorter cranks, more rise bar, push on grips, conti enduro tires for 44.5lbs. Very nice geo and could probably shave a couple lbsClick image for larger version.

So at 4700 kms on the orginal NX drive train had noticably deteriorated, I had already tore up a chain last month so I repalced rearcluster/ front chainring/ X01 chain/ inner & outer cable,

So thats what I get out of an E-bike drive train which I think is pretty good not out of line with an acoustic bike , NX works OK and at < 350$ its pretty cheap to replace, lots of steel to take the punishment

I did 3 chain replacement on this drive train and IME its definatlely worth upgrading an NX chain to an XO1 at the first chain replacement

I wax my chain. I’m in generally dry conditions and I’m impressed with the performance and lack of wear on the drive train. Wax my acoustic as well. Started a couple of years ago and love the cleanliness of the setup.

Im at about 3000km on my 11-48 10spd microshift adventX. On my 2nd chain and about to put a 3rd on. So far so good. Shifts are still super crisp. Steel cassette. We'll see how long it lasts. Cheap amazon chainring. Cassette , chain and chainring were just over 200cad. Der and shifter are just under 200cad. 10spd is good spacing for the eeb. 9spd previously was a little too big of a gap between shifts i think.
The higher end chains are a lot better. I used to think they were just labelling. I'd like to try the 10 spd 11-50 shimano linkglide. I couldnt find the wide range cassette anywhere for that before i opted for the microshift. Probably more widely available now

Buddy of mine has a Haibike Xduro. Idler pulley wheel broke. They’re saying it’s like 14 weeks before it can be replaced. Fuck that. Fuck all proprietary parts.

I looked at a pict of an Xduro and i don't see any kind of proprietary Idler pulley on the bike except a pulley on a standard Shimano derailleur which should be available anywhere ?

That'd be for an old bosch gen2. 2014ish. The huge motor with the tiny chainring. I'd look to a motor service center in the uk. I bet one of them would have something.
Lately i hear more shit customer service stories from haibike, canyon, and the ktm/gasgas/husqvarna group and others despite some pretty cool bikes produced by all of them. New haibike nduro looks pretty sweet. A nice departure from their previous odd shapes

Also bit of an update on my microshift advent x. Seems like i have a bit of a jumping around chain and a growl from maybe a pulley. Looked a couple x for a stick or branch in there but thats just been on trail without my reader glasses. Going to have a closer look today w glasses. I was watching tge shadow cast on tge road and i could see my chain bouncing around on the flat. Hopefully just some trail debris. Thats a big thing around here but i also see a couple people on the eeb forum mention skipping and tightening the clutch. Theyre looking to go to shimano deore linkglide. Apparently tge hyperglide rear der is listed at 11-42 but it works up to 48 and quite reasonably priced

I think because the bike is long travel and the gen 2 has a 16t ring they added an idler to keep the chain on that tiny chainring.
Looks like these guys have them

Probably a lot of them still floating around urp. The E thing was in the early days over here when the gen2 was around. Trek and kona were the only ones i remember with the gen 2. Haibike had a bit of a presence in the states then though

    Not the derailleur.
    Not part of the motor.
Just like a modern DH bike, only broken.

What e bike has the widest stock tires and tire clearance? Bonus points if it’s somehow on the cheaper end. Asking to advise some buddies who are considering getting them to get to surf fishing spots on the beach in the Northeast.

I have a QuietKat knockoff that takes 4.8". I only ride it in the winter.

Lot's of hub drive bikes have fat tires. Some are relatively cheap and might get the job done.

Not sure how well any E bike will handle salt?

Cool, wider than anything I found, thank you

Probably not great but guys do it. Salt has done a number on my acoustic fattie. Not my problem!

If it might be exposed to salt i'd think those bafang bolt on to your existing fatty would be the way to go. Lots of stories of people taking them apart after a year or 3 for maintenance to add grease only to find out they look like new inside
