Nectar was not memorable.
We actually did get a purple, but it lasted one night.
Mrs ::: ::: is 125# & I’m #200. She hated it & I loved it. She felt like she barely sunk into it. When we were in the stores, I think she was just more concerned about my back and figured she could deal with whatever I could deal with as long as it didn’t sleep hot. But that didn’t play out.
We looked at going split king so that we could just have what we needed individually. Seemingly we will never agree. But then you are in the zone of trying to level out mattresses, which is doable, but just another step to add. Also, split means buying two high priced mattresses instead of just one (despite the total size being the same).
We went back out & laid on a Saatva, Leesa, Casper & retried the Tempurpedic. The Tempurpedics are simply the best, but are also out of our league cost wise. We happened across Avocado in the mall & went in and tried that.
We have the Avocado now. Wife loves it; I’m not amazed but also not having any issues with it (my back was what provoked finally changing out our 11yo memory foam mattress). Year long trial period. 10yr + 25yr matls/mfg warranty (yrs 11-25 are pro-rated down ea yr). (Funnily, company has really only been around 10yrs at this point)
Avocado’s spot in the market is as a sustainable high end traditional build coiled spring + foam mattress. USA assembly of certified fair wage sustainable cotton & latex India-farmed materials. B-corp, the whole eco-marketing deal. We weren’t looking for that but they managed to provide the right combo of bounce, suspension/support. We also got a design trade discount, which made it easier.
I went out looking for a memory hybrid and ended up with a traditional mattress. So far so good…
I was recently looking at mattresses and it's actually funny how unhelpful the reviews are. Even for a mattress that overall is reviewed well you'll have a huge dichotomy in user reviews from people saying they absolutely loved it, to others saying they couldn't get through one night. Too hard, too soft, etc.
You can also assume a good chunk of them are fake...and that possibly another good chunk aren't even for the right mattress because people are dumb (Oh, "it is a Sealy posturepedic, I love it"...except there have been 100 versions of that mattress over the years).
Made even more complicated by the fact that the traditional mattress companies deliberately obfuscate the models so you can't compare across stores (they sell mattress A with cover X at one store and then swap to cover Y and call it something else at store #2)
As mentioned earlier in the thread, this place is better than most: https://www.sleeplikethedead.com/ but it is still a PITA, hard to make sense of, and is nothing compared to actually spending time on the mattress.
Personally, I have some sort of Casper "Hybrid" costco model. Tried a straight bed-in-a-box foam Leesa mattress and it was OK for a few years, but I prefer the presence of actual springs in the hybrids...but I still think it sleeps a bit too warm.
If you needed to own a mattress for a year for a temporary living situation and then it is getting donated/trashed what would you be looking for? I need something somewhat firm from a back perspective.
Who’s buying mattresses at Costco and other big box stores?
Do you drop it flat in the store and climb on board while people eat free samples around you?
I always assumed these were guest bedroom or kids room purchases

However many are in a shit ton.
They frown if you take your special friend to pound town in the middle of the store, so in store testing is not conclusive. Ol Mike might have something to say on the subject.
Another vote for CL or facebook. Companies like purple who drop ship mattresses and offer a 90 no questions asked warranty have people they contract with to pick up mattresses that customers want to return. The ones that are perfect get resold and the contractor delivers it and keeps the cash. The rest get taken to the dump. Prices are roughly a third of retail in my experience and the mattresses are spotless. Add a new mattress cover and you're golden.
Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
Cletus: Duly noted.
Went with a Sealy High Point hybrid soft king. Arrived as I was heading to work. Looking forward to bed time.
Don't be surprised if it feels firmer than you remembered the one in the store felt. When I got my Beautyrest Black Luxury Firm I was disappointed with my first night's sleep as it was not broken in like the one I tried at the store. Salesman told me to walk it to help break it in. Not sure if that is good advice for a hybrid. Mine is an innerspring.
Despite the rough start I'm still in love with my Beautyrest Black after 12 years (just me on it and I rotate it weekly).

the whole initial break-in period guarantee is really about adaptation, not about recognizing specific comfort per se
i'm guessing that few new beds are instantly perfect when coming from something else
we humans probably have a pretty wide range of adaptable comforts as long as the bed isn't fundamentally injurious over time or at an extreme that prevents relaxation
Best nights sleep in a decade hands down.
Sooooo damn comfortable. We made a fabulous choice.
Wrote my first review in here about a decade ago for a Saatva Queen Size 14½” Premier Luxury Mattress. I jacked my back up weightlifting in early 2022 and tried to mitigate the strain in any way possible. The mattress seemed like an obvious place to start as it felt uneven. Indeed, laying a broomstick across it indicated that it was sagging enough for Saatva to warranty my 2014 purchase and give me another one for half price. I was quite happy with the first one and getting seven years out of it seemed reasonable. It was nice to get a new Saatva and thankfully my back strain issue resolved on its own after a few months of discomfort and a lot of Pilates. Perhaps the bed helped, but tough to say.
More recently, my gf and I noticed that the new Saatva was deteriorating rapidly. Not sure if they reduced the quality or what, but after under 3 years the Saatva was cooked. We could literally hear springs sort of popping when moving around on the mattress and it became very uncomfortable. So we started shopping around for a new one and did quite a bit of online as well as in store research.
We tried a lot of different mattress and were originally intrigued by the Purples as we have some of their pillows and like them quite a bit. However, after trying the Purples in store, we were both pretty meh on them as they felt quite flimsy.
We have a furniture store near us that had some deep discounts on floor models and after all of the testing, we decided to go with a Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt firm for almost 50% off. Holy fuck where has this thing been all my life? It makes the Saatva feel like I was sleeping on rusty rebar and broken bricks covered by a thin blanket. Admittedly, it's a lot of fucking money for a bed, but man oh man is it comfy. Lots of people say the Tempurs are not good for hot sleepers and I am prone to waking up hot around 3 AM, but so far haven't noticed much difference between the the Tempur and Saatva. I guess we'll see what happens later this summer when the real heat comes. There is of course the Tempur Breeze models, but they are even more expensive.
If the Tempur gets too hot come August, might have to explore the Eight Sleep, which is also way more money than I want to spend, but I have heard from others that they are "game changers."
Still absolutely loving my Beautyrest Black after 12 years of use.

A few years ago i bought a $2500 foam mattress. Good quality.
Last year, i bought, for a different room, a$200 mattress from Amazon
Indistinguishable from the expensive one.

There are at least 8 different kinds of foam, plus the way you layer them makes a difference.
Plus springs.
Plus the purple waffle thing.
Plus the air mattress crap.
Most of the name crap is just marketing to suckers. They spend more on marketing than almost anybody.
Figure out what you like, figure out what your spouse likes. If its not the same you can get one made half and half that isn't that bad at a mom and pop store. If you weigh 275 and she is 105 is might not be the same thing.
Don't buy urethane foam.
Anyone use a BedJet for cooling?

I wake up roasting like a furnace, even beds with their fancy dancy “cooling gel”.

While I think sleep number is a bit of a scam, it really solved the problem for us. Split king. Adjustable bed. Different firmness. And we each have different toppers. Plus we each get to put our favorite bottom sheet on. I like high thread count cotton. She likes flannel and fleece. We take turns selecting the top sheet. Maybe not the best mattress, but it really solved the problem.
So ... not really a mattress problem then?![]()
