    Oof. My first totally selfish thought is:
    “What about Pass Shuttles for Mt. Biking?”
    Things are going to get…complicated.

    Yeah. J-Hole priorities...

    Million$ for paved bike paths and pedestrian bridges that get used 4 months a year, bupkis for critically needed infrastructure upgrades.

    JH doesn’t have anything to do with Wydot decisions. The pathways have gotten thousands of people out of their cars, even if it is 4-6 months, it surely helps. And has prevented who knows how many deaths on the roads.

    dude it's going to take forever to try and enter that traffic circle from the hoback side between non stop cars in it from star and jackson

    edit: shockingly not bad at this current moment. https://www.wyoroad.info/highway/web...S2689HobackJct

    Jackson and the village will have a massive shortage of workers until the road is fixed.

    I expect most people who rent in Victor will give up on driving the long way around. Some will find jobs on the TV side, a few will find some kind of living arrangement on the JH side, I'd guess many will leave the area.

    Those who own in Victor will probably suffer through the commute until school starts back up in the fall and then quit because they won’t see their kids during waking hours.

    Imagine trying to get to the village from Victor now. Probably 2+ hours to Jackson through Alpine and another hour to the village. That’s a casual 6 hour daily commute.

    On the plus side maybe it’ll be a quiet summer in Teton Valley with less traffic and crowds.

    Never been a better time to ask Jackson employers for a big raise.

    But, I think it's going to be fixed before summer is over. It's not as serious as an unstable slope above the road. Long term, something needs to be done about the route tho; the road crosses that fault twice (its caused major problems downhill) and its probably going to be a problem for ever.

    Yes, let's not confuse Jackson with Cheyenne. WYDot is all Cheyenne kooks, and they could screw up a free meal.
    What we need, when we need it, is not an angle of approach for them.

    That little ripple has been in that road for many years, maybe decades. Amazing it tore out as big as it did.
    That late March snow dump created some serious ill effects with the extra late snow cover and now rapid melting. The Snake is raging right now.
    Our bike path mania is largely funded by donations from uber wealthy philanthropists looking for a way to look good whilst dodging taxation on the large scale by HQ' ing in WY.

    My money says it's fixed at least temporarily by Christmas if not Halloween. Spudrovian commuters are unstoked fosho.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In Vill news, the chairs, ropes and base station of Sublette have been removed and sit at the base now.
    Looks like the new base terminal will be a bit left of prior placement; maybe making the liftline on top of the ridge instead of protected behind it.
    Faster but now with more wind affect. Lifties better take up chair cleaning cuz the rime factor is gonna be increased by 10.
    Top station is lower by about 100'. To get to 10sleep you'll still go right but a low angle flat roadway to the lowest skiers right.
    Cutting around the ridge to ski that little pitch or to head under the cooler into Left field will only come via east ridge traverse.
    And that's a good thing. Maybe the first time ever that they unpressured an acre or two.
    Word on the grapevine is that the new owners are against the restructuring that was planned for the summit.
    They appear to be fully behind leaving the summit cabin as is and preserving it for its character.
    They could get rid of that dumb sky walk too.
    Opening day this summer, someone skied down under the skywalk into Horseshoe couloir and was gonna rappel thru the crux, who does that?
    Apparently had a problem and fell off rope somehow and crunched pelvis or some such shite. Helivac short haul in first hour of the season.
    Took a box lap this am and I asked about snow conditions. Few reports say skiing is ok and mostly solid but still some punchy/rotten places.
    Prolly not bomber and settled everywhere. Pow 8s and 4shadows look choice tho. Maybe some runneling in 4.
    Not freezing overnight and melting fast now.
    In ‘97 the canyon slid near the Dog Creek elk feeding site. We lived in Alpine and had to commute around to Jackson via Pine Creek and the pass. Unconvenient, but doable. My wife met her best friend carpooling to Jackson during this period and even though we are now in Boise and she is in Duluth, they are thick as thieves. It will all work out.
    Yup, spring after big snow season 90sick90heaven. Canyon closed for weeks, river too high to float for a while.
    The road eventually opened and promptly got the canyon road we know today. It used to be 2 lanes from Alpine to Smith's and narrow too.
    My buddy's Dad owned JHWW so we went out the second day it was open, 37,000cfs iirc.
    We flew from put in to pull out. I went in once but my bud pulled me back in just before Rope rapids. Sidenote, his grandfather piloted the Enola Gay.
    If they cut out some trees, and infill the inside radius of that curve, then I agree that by late summer, those that don't puss out and move will be back to launching the pass.
    So many upsides to this (since I don't commute). Does WyDOT start allowing driving to trail heads? What about winter access? Sled access to Taylor from Mike Harris? Looping Mail Cabin/Mike Sell via the road suddenly looks far more attractive.
    This might give Teton Valley a nice little chance to slow down and breathe and figure out what it is with the connection to JH severed. Jobs that have been tough to fill will get filled. Airbnb's will sit empty. I might just go to Music on Main. My condolences to those who commute, it's going to be rough for a bit. Owning Alpine real estate looks like a winner.
    Heard the quote on the top of the tram was like triple the one from six years ago and that is the issue for new owners. Whatever works I guess
    Yeah… I actually threw down and bought the groms JHMR bike passes this summer in addition to their ghee bike passes. Figured with big sis having her license now she could take her little bro over a bunch this summer for a change of pace from the ghee lift served that’s in our backyard. Could be worse I suppose. Feel for those who need to commute [emoji120]
    This was my first thought. I wanted to race my motorcycle to the top and back with no traffic. Backcountry access will be sweet. Quieter than usual, more space to yerself.
    Oh, I believe that.
    Whatever it takes to keep the fuckin waffle eaters to a minimum. Send them all to Casper or Bridger; no tram rides for food in winter before 11 am.
    That little zero overhead cabin is a fucking money mint. Hoodies for $65, coffee and a shot for $15, water bottle for $5, etc.
    I'm just a dentist, but my theory is that section of road was built on fill that WYDOT put there. You can see that the trees in the slide path are much smaller (thus younger) than the trees around them. You can also see the clear line in the slide between dirt and rock. Not solid ground. The original pass road was in the drainage to the north, you can still see a lot of it. Seems to me they're going to have to build a road over there and bypass the current ridge that the road is on now.
    Riding bikes up the Old Pass Road and back down will be epic. (And likely a wee bit illegal). I went about 70 mph during the pandemic. I don’t want to do that again, but not having oncoming traffic changes the entire experience.
    As a retired dentist I fully agree. That slide picture is all loose fill.
    Somebody fucked up the engineering when the new road was built.
    You would expect more shoring and reinforcement on the down slope. But that would cost money. Fuck WYDOT
    Yeah, damn, didn't think of that. You should start a roadside lemonade/beer stand and make a mint. Maybe just sell shots on the roll...
    One time I was coming down and got behind Selkowitz on his roadie and just followed him with some buffer space. At the Elliot cemetery he's doing 40mph easily and a deer darts across the road. He barely flinched. Just enough to suggest a need for some fresh shorts.
    I saw a news bit last night that showed a drone fly over. The inside radius of the turn has already been regraded and my money says they just infill the inside radius down towards the trees and make a newer turn in the bank. Shoring the outside of the curve will be the feat of engineering.
    Nothing new about that road. Never seen any work on that section, nor any of that side to any real extent; maybe lower down a decade ago but not much, mostly fixing rockslide damage.
    That road takes a daily and seasonal pounding. I'd say it performs pretty well, 95% of the time.
    Remains to be seen if that tree that's bent (from the slide wayback when) right as the turn begins downhill has fallen away. It's historical.
    Does this road closure prevent Djongo’s dispensary runs to MT? Do we need to organize a cannabis airlift operation? Start dropping it from the sky over Jackson?
