Luckily it was a fiberglass hull and the hole wasn’t that big, so the repair was easy and fairly quick.

Yes please. I’ve been scheming for a CDory for years now. Twin 50s is intriguing. Fuel per hour, overnight capabilities, limitations on a multi-night, etc. thanks!

We’ve owned our CDory for about 3 years now… it’s a 2004 22 Cruiser. Twin 50HP Tohatsu motors. We call it our VW Westfalia of water and that seems like the best comparison. It’s not big, or fast, or particularly comfortable but it gets you there and back through most weather pretty well. It is small, simple, and easily handled.

Burns about 3-5 gallons per hour with 36 gallons of fuel capacity. 20 gallons fresh water capacity with a foot pump onto the sink. No head (we shit in a 5 gallon bucket and piss overboard). We cook on a Coleman two burner camp stove in the cockpit and use a cooler with ice when camping. Did add a small diesel heater to heat the cabin in Spring and Fall which extended our season a month on each end. Added roof racks to carry sea kayaks. Sleeps 2 comfortably… 3 in a pinch with the dinette folded down… 4 in an emergency with one on the floor. As you can see it’s very similar to car camping but with less traffic and better views. #overwatering

The best parts of the CDory:
Simple
Fuel efficient (gets up on plane at 12 knots)
Shallow 9” draft with the flat bottom for beach access
Enclosed cabin for weather protection

Worst parts of the CDory:
Flat bottom can pound in chop (must slow down)
Access to the foredeck with very narrow side decks for anchoring
Access to midship lines and bow lines when docking with the pilot house
Flat bottom means no real bilge so cockpit sole can hold rainwater that pump can’t evacuate all of

Way cool. My dreams are C Dory curious also. If I ever have to move to Florida to take care of my parents, I could see having one for an ICW cruiser/camper/fisher. I like the car camping comparison because that's just my style.

Thanks Single, appreciate the information and the PM. There are some of the obvious negatives to the C Dory and now you've pointed out some of the not so obvious. Boats are like RV's in that it's probably impossible not to have a number of give and takes with any one platform. What appeals to me is they seem like a great economical boat for exploration and adventure. I dream of taking it to Powell, San Juans, etc and wherever else we can think of.

If we are looking for something along these lines any other boats we should be considering? Just me an my wife, we don't need fancy but we do want safe, practical and comfortable.

BTW, we live in Tahoe and I realize this is not going to be a good Tahoe boat. I'm more or less dreaming of adventures in retirement, but in the meantime having something sooner than later would be cool.

I got the blll for all the spring stuff today too, so I get it. I better have a shitload of fun is this year is all I can say.

Last season, it seemed like literally every time we had opportunity, it rained. and every time it was nice out, I had to work. It rained like, the whole month of June and then again August. Only got out 5 times all summer.. Season before that, (or was it two? I forget) she was waiting on a part (steering cable) that took SO LONG to source (Covid-related boat parts shortage) and I only got to use her for 1 month - probably 3 trips.

I really am going to miss having her, but.. unless you're retired and have literally every day open to the possibility, it makes such little sense here in the Northeast where the season is only realistically like 3 months long. Sour grapes

Heard that. Never minded cleaning and polishing and wrenching on it when we were using it all the time, bit kids got older and didn't want to hang on the boat with us. If it was parked behind my house I might feel differently.
Still have my 13 Whaler though, sitting on the side of the house. That keeps me on the water, just a lot closer to shore.
