That's hilarious. "I didn't know what the knocking noise was from my suspension so I just started blindly cutting bits off until it stopped."

If I hadn't seen my father in law start randomly start ripping out wires in the console of his own boat when the prop alarm started going off to shut it up, I'd think that post was a fake and there's no way anyone would take that approach.

Despite the radical surgery executed by the OP in that thread, he might be on to something. When I had the right rear wheel off the other day, that cover was indeed loose but I never put 2 and 2 together. I'm not going to start ripping things off but I will have my guy take a look at that when he gets an opening in his schedule. I tired searching on MB World but didn't find that thread.

Back on road after 6 years. 172k 6 speed was a long time customer’s. Not a great car to put back together when you have a kid in college…. Sheesh every time I open the hood $$….

It's an Opel, built in Germany.

I drove a friend's a couple of times...not a bad ride but the lower trim levels didn't have much in the way of what I consider "standard" things. Also, a lot of the ones I saw when I was searching for a wagon had high miles. Not sure why but that's what I saw. Maybe people really liked them and only traded them in or tried to sell them when they approached 100K miles.

I love ya'lls wagon fetish and keep trying to talk myself into one but the reality of dirt road, shitty jobsite driveways and maintenance concerns (cost, no dealer, busy mechanics) lead me in a different direction.

Re: High mileage on Opel Tour X's I know quite a few sales reps that bought them because the price and AWD was a winner. I bet that a bunch of gig drivers did too, especially the ones that do a lot of airport runs.

They definitely have become sorta cultish - probably the most expensive Audi to keep on the road from that era if you’re doing it comprehensively. Such a nice piece of equipment. I’m going deep down the rabbit hole on this one. It was supposed to be the donor for a 6 spd swap into my a6 4.2. But I just couldn’t break it up…. Total tank…

To be fair, basing Audi long-term ownership costs on the most complex Audi made to date that debuted in (checks notes) 1999, isn't really reflective of modern models reliability/ownership costs. We've got many here that have taken their allroads (and other models) well over the 150k mark, myself included, with no more than the usual maintenance costs.

And I have always admired that first allroad and the efforts y'all take to keep such a unique car on the road.

Ha. That's a pretty good point. I have fond memories of that Allroad from when they debuted. I was working at the Porsche dealership and our friendly competitors from Audi nextdoor brought one over to show off to us. The adjustable suspension is what I remember blowing my young mind. Thing was a technical marvel for sure. Our whole staff was drooling over it. Man, those were good times. Back when used Porsches, and even exotics were dirt cheap on the used market (at least as compared to today). :cryemoji:

If I were in your shoes, I'd totally be like a chick who can't help herself but to rescue all the dogs and cats at the shelter who need a home. Like somebody saving some cranky, mean dog who was going to be euthanized, it would just KILL me to think of a car that used to be great, being destined to go off the junkyard to get crushed or put through the shredder. Then having to explain to the wife why I NEEDED to rescue yet another poor car. Haha.

Tell me about it. The 993 is a particularly sore subject for me. I've prolly told this story a thousand times here, but all this time later I am STILL kicking myself for not finding any way necessary to buy a '96 turbo I had the chance to pick up for a song. White, blue leather interior. Maybe 30K on it. Flawless and was crazy fast for the time. I drove it every chance I could. Dealer told me I could have it for trade-in price ($35,000) and young me just couldn't swing it. Especially being a broke student going to college at nights. I COULD HAVE figured something out, but I thought "No, no. Don't be financially irresponsible. There will be plenty of other opportunities as time goes on." I mean, cars only go DOWN in value, right? WRONG! It took me less than 10 years to get to a spot financially where it would be a much more sound decision, but goddammit prices shot up, never to return to earth. And no matter HOW much short-term success I may have had at that time, they just kept getting further out of reach with each passing day. And then I became broke again due to life happening, so now dropping more than my entire modest net worth on one is REALLY out of the question. Really depressing. Welp. Glad I got to experience it (and a bunch of other kick ass 90s exotics) back in its prime at least, which is better than most I suppose. Still, I REALLY wanted one parked in my garage. ...le sigh...

When I bought my first car, a 1981 Datsun 200SX 5spd, I was trying to finagle a way into this 75 or 76 911 that was for sale around the corner that was $1200 less (asking $2k!) but I couldn't get insurance for it. Being a 17 year old boy on Long Island made it literally impossible.
