"big money has a nasty habit of ruining our favorite sites". Ima go way out on a limb and say we're safe for a while.
Big money doesn’t care about forums. There are much easier ways to target advertising these days.
The suits had us for at least a little while (I've lost track of where TGR stands at this point) and we either scared them away or are unbreakable. Either way we should be proud.
Live Free or Die
we are no more than a bloating whale on the TGR beach. sure, they could get the dynamite but the stinky shit is confined for now.
The site doesn't work properly enough to monetize it with any real meaning.
And that's ok. The glitches are a feature, not a flaw.

"everybody's got their hooks into you, fuck em....forge on motherfuckers, drag all those bitches across the goal line with you." - (not so) ill-advised strategy
Either.

Remember box fan-tender Old Andrew? Didn't he go join the new corporate overlords and just leave the server closet to rot? Maybe that was a good thing for this place.
I still call it The Jake.
It's a shame that the early promise of the Web as a way to build community has been so thoroughly besmirched and exploited by capitalism and the drive to get rich quick. Fortunately, there's no way to get rich off TGR, so I don't think this community is ever going to be throttled by the drive to monetize.
Oh there's a way to get rich off TGR.

Bathrobes aside, and outside of the few bitcoin millionaires we have, does a forum full of post menopausal divorced men with depression issues and $10K in retirement savings really appeal to advertisers?
And let's not forget the Canadians, they're only equivalent to 0.74 of a US consumer.
"timberridge is terminally vapid" -- a fortune cookie in Yueyang
More actual real people may start moving back to bastions like TGR forums:

Aim for the chopping block. If you aim for the wood, you will have nothing. Aim past the wood, aim through the wood.</p>
come on now, our extensive research on the vagaries of upstate boundary lines alone has got to be worth a fortune. seriously, the free carfaxes are reason enough for a hostile corporate takeover…
fact.
