It seems more often than not they have some reason to close half the mountain but brag about staying open. At least they're still going to charge $155 for a day ticket.

I believe they’re replacing gadzoom this summer. But that is still ridiculous, as lift construction season won’t start till well later. Maybe they’re worried about dropping something important. Every year they do seem to be less interested in spring ops, maybe they’re just figuring out a way to make Octoberfest longer.

They're replacing Wilbere and remodeling Mid-Gad Restaurant (going to take 2 years!), which makes me also think that MTB will be closed on that side all summer as well.

It will load from gad valley, go a little higher and be high speed. I think it’ll take pressure off of gadzoom. Selfishly, it’s going to be a boon for the race program.

Can't see it going any higher, but it will sure serve the race team well.
Wilbere ridge is about the only place in the ski area not in an avalanche path or runout.
Years ago I gained permission from the mountain for the race team to train early mornings as long as they didn't get underneath avy routes.
Not one person ever has, to their credit; coaches stand at critical places to ensure this.
Hell they'll be able to hold races during control work now...

Surprisingly good out there today with a fresh few inches falling this morning after lifts started spinning.

Agreed the post season at the bird aint what it used to be and continuing the decline. The 4/14 closure of Gadzoom is super lame. I think they get down to the tram and peruvian and then close the tram to put the summer deck on it. I love the bird, but it gets harder every year

John Cumming and Dave Fields can both go eat a bag of dicks. They’ve turned the once great Snowbird into a fucking joke.

    That’s too bad.

We used to count on skiing in early-mid November (remember PC hosting America’s Cup over Thanksgiving) and now we’re lucky to have lift served runs in LCC by then… while school and other things got in the way in the spring back then, it seemed we wrapped up skiing by early April (maybe it was the equipment?) as I now feel we get great skiing through April and don’t even think about putting the gear away until May…

I think plans for mid-April are a no brainer, but as others suggested, remain adaptable to expectations based on the forecast - could be beach weather or knee-deep.

    First full Season was 84-85.
Most years we had snow to ski at Thanksgiving, one year my dad took us to Brianhead for Thanksgiving weekend as local hills were bare and South got an big early dump . Having your dad pull up to High school with skis on the roof to pick up you and your buddy when all the local hills were closed was rad.

"Americas Opener" WC was often a white ribbon surrounded by brown in PC. Remember drinking party balls in the mud in the late 80s

My dad and I started a tradition in the late 80s early 90s that we went up the tram on Fathers day and Hiked/Glissaded/Skied down and did some of all in the years that followed.

94-95 was biggest year I remember as we skied lift served ( Tram and Little Cloud) on July 4th but remember lots of years skiing into June in Little Cloud. It was juge all over he west as I drove over Independance pass a few weeks later going to Aspen from the Springs and had 15 ft walls of snow on either side.

Ealry 00s after I moved back from Aspen I remember one year there was nothing and then LCC got a huge storm measured in feet the days before Thanksgiving and Alta opened for Turkey day

03-06 when I ran the hotel at Solitude we and the mountain always planned to be open Thanksgiving until the weekend after Easter and it usually worked, even if thin in Nov

Bird has started closing earlier both due to weather and lack of interest in keeping skiing going through June these days.

April you should be fine to ski but may be sloppy in afternoons.
I always told guests April early was ideal as prices were cheaper and base was optimal and we still would get Cottonwood worthy storms.

Seriously? Fuck. I have a « make up trip »
To Snowbird with the family April 19-20 since our trip in January was a bit of a disaster (could not make it up the mountain, had to fight like crazy to get a credit for our hotel room). I can’t say the bird is really working for me these days.

So does that mean no Gadzoom or Gad 2 and you have to take the Bassackwards/Big Emma Traverse? No Get Serious to the lower traverse?

Talking about the old Park CIty WC races reminded me.

I am not sure I can ever fully communicate the majesty of Alberto Tomba and his enormous entourage and hot girl hanger ons walking through the Albertsons in Park City in the late 80s....

Sure. But Katarina Witt wanted nothing to do with him

Super fun bluebird Friday @ Alta. Ran out of excuses and knocked off a couple new spots...Baldy shoulder and Devil's Castle. Good way to escape the crowds and find fresh turns.

While on the hike to Devil's Castle-which was practically empty by 1pm, I hear a bunch of hootin and hollerin behind me coming from someone in a familiar outfit. Low and behold it's another mag, pfluffenmeister hunting for turns in the Castle.
