All of them, Indy, Detroit, STL, anyone who thinks we can afford to fix other countries, hasn’t spent a day in these cities.

KC has half the murders of NYC, with a population of 500k vs 8 million. Think about that.

My average client downtown lives off less than $750 a month in social security. There are literally miles of abandon homes.

    It’s a disgrace.

If only there was something we could do...

copied from elsewhere because i agree that guns everywhere would simply be madness and worse than things already are:

Being in the parade shooting yesterday has completely radicalized me on open carry laws.

this post will contain some of my observations from the mass shooting that occurred yesterday, so if this is a sensitive subject for you, please don't read.

This post is not to farm sympathy, but to completely dispel the idea that mass shootings will be meaningfully impacted by "good guys with guns" as pro-gun people have a tendency to believe.

I was somewhere around 20-30 feet from where the initial shooting happened yesterday in the Super Bowl rally for the Kansas City Chiefs. I and everyone I was with are physically fine, obvious trauma aside. But, we were close enough that shrapnel from a bullet striking the ground cut my leg.

I have seen, in the wake of the shootings, hundreds upon hundreds of posts from people saying that reforming gun laws wouldn't have helped because the shootings were likely from illegal guns in the first place. I agree in the sense that I don't think this is a good example to cite for increasing background checks and barriers to purchasing a firearm. However, from the perspective of actually being there, it is a perfect example to show why open carry laws need to be reformed. For additional context, Missouri is a open carry/no permit required state for handguns.

The initial shooting that happened near me was absolutely targeted at an individual person, from which I saw 3 people that got hit in the crossfire. We saw that initial shooter run away, into the crowd, and I don't think they have been identified as a suspect. We have been in contact with the police to attempt to locate him, but it is pretty clear to me that the subsequent shootings were not related to the initial shooter given that there were 3 additional people arrested on site for other incidents. From the moment of the initial shooting, it was complete and utter chaos. No one knew what was happening or who to be afraid of, but everyone in the area was scared for their life. There were hundreds of thousands of people around, and I am positive that any "good guys with guns" could not have possibly contributed anything but damage to the situation. Anyone there who was open carrying would have no idea who or how to identify the danger, they would just be scared for their life around hundreds of thousands of people with a deadly weapon. I would honestly be shocked if some of the injuries from yesterday weren't caused by an honest, open carrying, and terrified person from the crowd. In the moment, I didn't want anyone around me to have a gun unless they were trained to handle situations like this, such as the police, regardless of what their intentions were.

All of this to say, I will never again entertain the idea that "good guys with guns" are a meaningful solution to mass shootings. Most likely, what they are going to do is hurt innocent bystanders in their fear and confusion. Me and my family are lucky to be alive, and none of that luck came from any one of the likely thousands of people open carrying in the crowd.

Holy fuck dude. That sounds terrifying and incredibly traumatic. Glad you and your loved ones are ok from a physical harm standpoint.

Don’t discount how much mental trauma something like this hits you with. This is the shit people should go to counseling for but often don’t because they weren’t “hurt”. Take care of yourself and your loved ones.

I think that’s a Copy Paste - reread his first sentence… maybe OP needs to format that differently for clarity.

    Non-the-less - point still stands.

    I don’t get the point

I said KC had 10 x the murder rate. Certainly loose gun laws hurt. By a factor of 1.5 from my view.

My point, those towns have systemic poverty. East St Louis is in illinois, so is Chicago. i once met a guy shortly after he pulled his own teeth! Any American should be embarrassed by that.

Are we arguing poverty has nothing to do with it?

seeing as America is one of if not the richest country on earth and has by far the highest incidence of gun death I think we can rule out poverty as a cause.

FYI its access to guns & prevalence of guns that cause gun deaths.

Seems like people have been decrying NYs draconian gun laws for more than a decade now. Illinois has just recently hopped on that bus (see the notable things that "just changed this year"), so lets give it a little time to see how draconian gun laws affect that state moving forward over the next decade.

And I agree that socioeconomics play a large part in crime, violent crime, and gun crime. One easy way to address this would be to have a draconian ban on most guns, and a lucrative buy-back program for folks to turn in guns no-questions-asked for a nice stimulus payment to inject into their local economies.

Poverty is the biggest common demoninator imo.

People get all about red states vs blue states red states vs blue cities, both of which we all know are a way to argue more gun laws vs fewer gun alws, but there always seems to be cherry picked examples, with other data that seems to buck whatever trend whoever it is is trying to portray.

Poverty though, does not give people the same dopamine rush. If there is a problem they perceive as being the fault of people on the other side of the political spectrum's stupidity, they're able to feel a bit of smug outrage dopamine, which is a pretty powerful tonic to help one cope when confronting the existence of traumatic chaos in the world. Poverty is a lot harder and more complex and just gives people a headache to try and figure out and we're all lazy.

How in the freaking world does this make any sense?

You're saying gun buybacks are going to fix long standing economic problems? Geographically isolated poverty and disenfranchisement?

Some $50 gift cards are going to do this? Why even bother with the gun buybacks, ( mean I know thats the whole point to you) but if we can fix systemic poverty with a few $50 gift cards, seems like a no brainer, no?

Wait, seems like if that's all it takes, the covid stimulus checks should have eradicated poverty? No? Hmm. Any thoughts on why not? Everyone spending all their money on guns and avocado toast and no one has enough left over to pay their bills?

There are some thought provoking comments in this thread, but every time I come here, I also always read some of the absolutely least grounded in reality type of nonsense you can find anywhere online.

Have you really grown up in a world where you have not been aware there is poverty in the USA? Serious question. If that is the case, you're so sheltered no one should listen to you, the USA has a huge wealth disparity. If you aren't that sheltered, well then you're just intellectually dishonest.
